Back in '72 or so, I was taking a camping trip around the United States with
my then wife and two kids, age 9 & 10. We were driving my white Chevy
California hippie van with side pipes and big tires in the rear. My wife
was a fashion model and I had long hair and a beard.
We stopped in Sheffield Texas for gas and I tried to buy some beer. The old
crone in the store told me it was a dry area because people got drunk and
shot people. Paid for my gas and noticed 3 good ol' boys in a big pick up
truck with guns in the back window.
They were making comments about dirty hippies and California. We left and
they pulled out behind us. I sped up some and they did also. I said screw
it, and nailed it. I had a sort of hot 327 Chevy V-8 and I buried the
speedo. My guess it could push air at about 110 mph maybe. I looked in the
rear mirror and they were back there about 100 feet and could not get any
closer and I could not pull away! We did ran that way for 2 hours and I was
scared! I was hoping I would see a cop, but then thought they are probably
related anyway.
I had a full tank of gas and I guess they didn't because after about 2 and a
quarter hours, then slowed down and turned around.
Whew!!!!!!
Camped somewhere far away that night and in the morning, my wife trimmed my
hair and my beard very short!
I will never forget Sheffield Texas for the rest of my life!!!
