What's the normal suspension swing on an early (62) Spridget ? I installed a tube shock kit (by "We Race" or some other name like that) and I need to get a set of shocks to fit. When the car is at rest the distance between the mounting points is 12". I have a heavier "non-standard" engine, 400 lb springs and a =BE" anti-sway bar. What kind of suspension travel should I include in figuring out the overall compress and extended shock lengths=85. plus or minus 3", 2", plus 3" & minus 2"=85 etc. etc.?? Cheers, -Drew Drew @... adam I am in Leeds 1275 Midget rebuild over last couple of years and used for hill climbing at Harewood. I can certainly help as regards how to get things wrong first time and on various mods. When I bought this lovely thing 10 years ago, I thot it was the right one - anyone got an Aldon Yella for a pre A+? (71 Midget 1275) This one's been fondled, but never mounted. I gather Aldon quit making them due to probs getting parts from Lucas. This lists at $300 and the pre at $280. Can we talk? The yellow's sposed to be most compatible with performance cams, but the Red is for racers. David McCartney Captain Rapture 24394... MORE

Well I've gone and done it..the '60 is coming apart. Engine and trans are out in preparation of a complete refurb. At the very least this will include new inner and outer sills, maybe floors and possibly rear spring boxes. Paint will be redone and interior gone thru. I have a 1275 and ribcase waiting to be rebuilt and installed, along with Weber sidedraft etc. I am seeking suggestions on cams, porting and header. This will be a "quick" street car, neither a daily driver nor a "road racer." Any advice will be appreciated. At this point my proposed... MORE

Adam This really isn't an easy question to answer, which is why I suspect you haven't had many replies! I read this last night and I've been pondering it ever since! The first thing I think you need to do, is really decide what it is you wan =3D=0D t, and what your priorities are because many of your requirements seem to conflict =3D=0D with each other. To be honest, I think you need to forget about Frogeyes, they just are not =3D=0D within your budget of =A33,000, you can get Frogeyes for that money, but yo u'=3D=0D re... MORE

G'day Brad The valve stem diameters are the same. You can squeeze 1275cc valves into a 1098cc head (12G295) if you want to, but you will need to open the combustion chamber up quite a bit to allow gas flow around the valve, or you are defeating the purpose. Really no great advantage. 1275cc head will fit on 1098cc block, but if you have a high lift cam, and/or 1.5:1 rockers, the exhaust valves will hit the top of the block face. You will need to machine a crescent out of the block, up to .100" deep (I just... MORE

with regards to understeer, this may be of interest, I swapped the front springs on my 1500 for 400lb 8 1/4" springs with poly bushes all round and a 3/4" ARB with nylatron bushes (i have a freeling the old ARB was 9/16ths) its a '75 UK car btw. Now, this tightend the front end up no end and felt great, however, ther rear still had the standards springs and was lowered 1" on blocks. After these mods it had a tendency to snap oversteer mid corner (after initially understeering) , I was going to play with the tyre... MORE

"Spridgfire Over-Drive" Thanx, Guy... I understand. Very nice to have. My older brother had a '52 Merc. with O/D on second and third (top). It was a mechanically controlled unit. He used to street race like most kids did back in their high school days and he used this to advantage. Unit wasn't made for this at all but he never had a problem with it. Very tough! :) Cap'n. Ah, Nigel... I perceive!! Still, you'd be talking at least 150lbs or so I guess or about the weight of a "small" passenger (or possibly very large baby cat...as in panther:). The fore/aft weight situation would definitely be a case for a larger diameter front anti-roll bar then, in any case then, which explains Guy Weller's upgrade in this respect to a tee...makes perfect sense in view of your explanation, Nigel. Still learnin'! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24066... MORE

Being the owner of a somewhat converted rubber bumper 76 midget,I would like to say that my reasons for the change were simple.# 1 i got a nice car at a great price.#2 After much consideration and head scratching,I decided i could go without any bumpers.Having grown up in the 60S I never got over the hotrod/sportscar thing.Back then a midget/sprite looked pretty tough with no bumpers,A roll bar, wide stripes on bonnet and boot. They even had mag wheels[not minilight style]on some.Any way much as i prefer an older model chrome bumper model this is what i have to work... Well, Bill... As long as no cats have been injured, I remain on your side! :) Velcro closed "flaps" are the way to go around he roll bar. This is what I have and they work just fine in forming tight fit and keeping the water out. I have low backs (and always have) so I am of no use in the hi-back seat dept. Bob, A little while back I installed a pair of rear 5" speakers in the narrow space between the door pillar and the rear wheel arch. They fit really neatly and are only a few inches behind my head when driving. Out of town, there is no problem as I am not too bothered about the sheep listening to my choice of music. G'day guys Just thought I would add my thoughts on the over/under heating problem. My race car has a radiator I had made about 7 years ago. 3 cores and it's so thick it has cut-outs to clear the steering rack mounts! On a 100 F day, I can't get it to heat up. I warm it to around 180 F in the pits, go out for a 10 lap race and come in at 170 F. I was recently asked by a customer to make a copy of the radiator for his car, so with 7 years now... MORE

Trevor I investigated the possiblity of converting to gas shock absorbers myself and did some investigation into it, but I don't have that information to hand, so I'm going from memory. I think my conclusion was that it wasn't worth the money compared to the benefits received, as I mentioned, correctly working lever arm shock absorbers were perfectly adequate for normal road use. The comments I'd heard from people who had converted to gas shock absorbers followed similar lines - ie the benefits received didn't justify the expenditure. A case of the old 90/10 rule. Other comments were that... MORE
