Hi guys
And please don't think I'm now restoring a Mini because I'm not ok !
It's about time I updated you folks on how the Midget restoration's
coming on.
The bodyshell is now about 90% complete in gloss coat, there's a couple of
area's I need to deal with and a couple of panels to finish with 90/10
paint/thinners mix, to bring up the gloss.
The bootlid has had 5 or 6 coats of 50/50 and now needs some 70/30, and 90/10
coats. Likewise the passenger door. The drivers door, is in primer now
awaiting its first gloss coats. The new bonnet is still in 'transport' primer and
sitting in my hall! I don't see ny point doing anything to the bonnet until I'm
ready to put it on the car, which is some way off yet - it'll only get damaged if
it sits around the garage.
Other things that have been done are the splash shields in top coat, bonnet
and bootlid hinges in top coat, and all the bonnet slam panel fittings.
I'm about to start installing refurbished items into the engine bay starting
with the pedal box and brake master/clutch cylinders and then all the brake
and clutch pipes.
After that it will be time to start refitting the doors, which brings me to the
'decision time' question.
I'd always intended to make up the interior trim panels myself (excluding the
door panels, can't replicate the heat embossed pattern at home) but I'm
wondering if it's better just to buy an interior trim kit.
Pricewise there's not a lot of difference between buying a ready-made kit and
making one up yourself, I'd probably save about 20 or 30 GBP doing it myself.
But the biggest advantge of making up the trim panels myself is being able to
thoroughly weatherproof the compressed hardboard panels and making sure
they fit correctly.
Does anyone have any experience of ready made trim panel kits? Are they any
good? Are the hardboard panels well weatherproofed? Does the grain pattern
match the original?
All comments appreciated.
Nigel
