Hi Ben
Converting the head by fitting hardened valve seats is the only
proper answer. I take the view that the worst that can happen by
using unleaded is a valve buring out, in which case all that needs
to be done is to have the hardened seats fitted at that point(and a
new valve of course!)
The additives are bad news as not only are they expensive but if the
car is not used regularly it can form a gunge in the tank and clog
up fuel pipes and jets etc.
LRP hasn't been available where I live (Reading) for a long time so
I have just been using regular unleaded. No problems to report but I
have just started using the higher octane Shell Optimax with great
success. The car ticks over better at idle, gives better performance
and seems to run a bit cooler to boot!
Also unless you have a recon head then your valve seats already have
25+ years of lead memory on them. With normal usage I doubt you'll
ever have any problems.
I see that you are another young member, who are you using for
insurance? I'm with Sureterm. Despite the extra performance of the
MG they have kept my existing policy price until the end of renewal.
Not bad considering my old car was a 2CV!!
