Jim...
most people convert their points ign. system to electronic Crane, PerTronix
(Lucas/Aldon "Ignitor") to get away from
the maintenance schedule which must
be followed to retain the intial efficiency
of the stock points system when new points are installed and concurrently,
dwell and timing are accurately set.
For as you know, as the points wear, dwell
and timing change. Thus, every 3k miles or
so, resetting these values is the only way to
maintain original efficiency of the points
type system.
Simply converting to the foregoing electronic systems while maintaining
the otherwise stock coil does away with
the scheduled maintenance mentioned above.
But, you can go further..........
.....IF you add a "juicier" coil while
converting as above, then you are also
building more of a "hi-intensity" ignition
system. The higher intensity will do a couple of things for you, depending
upon
what you CHOOSE to do with the increased
"potential".
You can use the increased potential as a
"reserve" to further spark plug life, make
cold/damp weather starting easier, run
slightly leaner mixtures, etc.
Or, you can choose to USE the increased
potential to lengthen the spark by opening
up the plug gaps, thus "pulling" as much
"juice" from the uprated coil as it is capable of producing. The lengthened
spark
will allow more complete combustion thus
giving more power for specific fuel consumed in pounds (economy) and
thus, fewer emissions (per pound of fuel
burned).
Another lister has already advised us why we cannot run more current throug
h
the stock points-type systems to the
extent we can with an electronic system....
the points just aren't up to conducting/
carrying the increased current while the
"black boxes" are.
Now....
If you choose to use the increased potential
of the uprated coil, then you MAY have to start replacing other stock ignit
ion parts
with parts of higher quality (capacity) to
handle this increased current flow. 'Cause
some of the stock parts weren't built with
a "hi-intensity" ignition in mind.
Do you now percieve?? {:D-<
