No, Ed. It's not a myth.
I am an electrochemist, and I've made my living in that field since
1964. I've published articles in peer reviewed journals, and I am
certified by the American Electroplater's and Surface Finisher's
Society. I have served on ASTM panels writing recommended metal
finishing practices, and I am certified to give legal testimony as
an expert witness in this field.
Here's a quickie explanation. In order to oxidize metals, a
positive ion has to form, that is Fe has to convert to Fe+2 in order
to form iron oxide (rust). When you impose a positive charge on
iron by connecting the bodywork to the + battery terminal, you add
something to the tendency for oxidation of iron. Connecting the
steel bodywork to the (-) side of the battery works against that.
That's why electroplating works. The metal at the anode (+)
dissolves into solution as positive ions, and the metal ions are
reduced to metal at the cathode (-) side. It's also why electro
protection works for underground oil and gas pipelines, and why
sacrificial anodes work to protect boats, outboard motors and other
metal structures which are immersed in water. No, converting to (-)
ground won't entirely stop corrosion as the process is more complex,
but it will slow it down.
Now, Ed, what are your credentials, what is your explanation, and
why do you suppose the world has agreed on negative ground?
