Vince....I may be mis-understanding
your terms, but here goes.....
Off hand, it sounds like the front carb is
"weak" while the rear carb is "correct"
or maybe a little rich. Don't forget, these
are "interdependent" considering they're "connected" by a "balance" tube.
Therefore it is possible for one carb to
run the whole show....IOW, one "weak"
and one maybe "overly" rich.
For BOTH carbs.....
the result with proper mixture should be
a slight initial rise in rpm (50 or so) followed by a return to the prior i
dle speed
as the air valve is "held" less than 1/8" off
the jet bridge.
A portable tachometer hooked up within the engine compartment for easy view
ing
is best for this. Better to "see" it as the ear
can play tricks after a while! Use the thousand rpm scale of course.
If you begin with the jets flush with the
jet bridge (which is the position the jets
should be in when the mixture nuts for
each carb are fully weak....check this...they
may not be) then when all is correctly
adjusted for mixture, the relative adjusted
position of each mixture nut should be
pretty similiar, unless you have air leaks
in a carb spindle(s) or intake system (intake
manifold gasket, etc., especially in the case
of one carb or intake runner rather than
both).
Further, I notice your's is a '68, first year
for US emmissions. Not familiar when they
switiched over (I've never personally run
and emissions engine) but do your carbs have "fixed" or "spring-loaded" nee
dles?
