I misunderstood. I thought you said it misfires above 2800, when what
you actually said is that it misfires AT 2800, but is okay above and
below. I'm pretty sure this is a carburation problem wherein at a
certain rpm there is a strange harmonic set up in the intake manifold
and carburetor, which causes erratic, uncontolled movement of the air
piston. Try this: Remove the old oil from the piston damper. To do
this you'll have to remove the cap and the screws which hold the cover
in place. Then remove the piston and it's diaphragm. Be careful,
don't tear the diaphragm. Pour out the old oil from the damper. Now,
assuming there was actually oil in there (about a tablespoon or so),
refill it with different oil. You'll have to judge (by eye) how
viscous the old oil was. If it looked thin, then refill with
something heavier, say 40 wt or 20W50. If it looked thck, then refill
with something light, say 0W30 or 5W30. You could even add a few
drops of 90W gear oil to make a very viscous oil, or a few drops of
kerosine to the light oil to make it lighter. Put everything back
together, and see if the problem goes away, or changes to a different
RPM. I'll bet you can solve the problem with the right oil in the
damper. Of course, if you find no oil in the damper to start with,
you've got the problem solved. Does the car ever backfire? If so, it
will loose it's damper oil.
