Right you are. I wondered if anyone would realize that the
distributor drive gear is connected to the camshaft which actually
turns the oil pump. Lots of wasted time doing it this way if you ask
me. Its your money.....I heard of one fellow that hooked up a
presurized bug spray can with oil in it to the oil gauge feed pipe or
something and pumped oil through his engine before starting. I heard
it killed bugs for miles when he drove by for years afterwards. LOL
Really, I think that this is to anal for a common street engine.
On my sports racer we have an accu-sump pressurized oil canister we
switch on prior to start up, this pressurizes the engine on demand
and start ups. It has a wild engine and needs the accusump. We also
have to remember to switch it off when we stop as well. Far to much
work for the week day "fun" car. If you race, it is well worth the
money though. To answer your question on do I pack the oil pump with
grease on assembly. No I don't. I disassemble every one I get and
spec it out though. I have found several new pumps that I wouldnt put
in my engines. Several have loose tollerances and lots of times the
face plate is not parallel to the housing. We work over everyone we
use. Mini Mania sells a high performance pump I think. Just remember
to check them out and oil it up with assembly lube (thick like STP)
prior to assembly. When I get the engine in the car and I am hooking
up things I splash a little oil in the oil feed pipe hole up by the
gauge pipe hole. This runs directly down into the oil pump to prime
it. Once and a while I will start an old engine that has sat a long
time and it will not develop oil pressure, even after 60 seconds or
so. I stop and pull out the banjo bolt and squirt some oil in the
hole. Works every time.
