"Sounds" (excuse the pun:) like you've got
a glasspack (free flow) on there, maybe
a Thrush or Cherry Bomb. These are
"straight thru" designs (as opposed to
the "baffled" stock (or Midas/Meineke/ Walker, etc.) system. It may also
be
the optional "GEX" straight-through type
I've see advertised by MiniMania.

deadening packed around the "open" core
allows for perfomance and/or gas economy along with allowing for a
cooler
running engine due to the easier trip the
hot exhaust gases have outbound.
allow the engine to run a little cooler
as well as the exhaust has an easier
time of it outbound. Normally, the packing
is fibreglass.
The excellent Flowmaster you find in
Summit/Jegg's catalogs is a more quiet
chambered affair which allows for excellent flow through with a noise
level
approximating the "GEX" as noted above.
Both Jacques LeC. and Gerard run these on their racing BE's wherein fit
for this
oval box is not a problem most likely because they are using fuel cells?
Fit MIGHT be a problem using a normal
fuel tank...I don't really know, not having
ever used a FMaster, personally. Also,
I do not know whether they are available
in a inlet/outlet diameter of less than 2".
The Spridget RC40 system (available in
a good grade of mild steel or better
stainless) is not a cheap system but like
the Flowmaster, provides for excellent
flow-through, even for a Spridget/BE
producing race-type horsepower.
They are reasonably priced full systems
and are recommended by Vizard on the
same level as the Flowmaster and are
available from www.Aptfast.com
They are quiet under most circumstances
but provide a nice throaty tone when you
put your foot in it...best of both worlds
IMHO.
You can also order (or should be able to)
an RC40 rear box only (with chrome tip)
as a simple replacement for your current
muffler. The sound on this will be a little
louder without the normal full system's
small front bullet muffler, but not by
much...nothing obnoxious or "tiring" to
the ears on longer drives. This is what
I am currently running...quiet when you
want quiet, nicely progressively louder
as you put your foot in it.
You may need to replace the pipe between the header and muffler as
well to fit the RC40 1.75 inlet/oulet.
