This car is both my love and my worst enemy. '76 Midget, single ZS All cylinders firing, all new plugs this afternoon. She idles fine and smooth, but as soon as i hit the road she revs fine UNTIL about 2800rpm, same spot every time, the rev nearly stops. No matter how far i push the accelerator, it takes nearly 30 seconds to rev from 2800 to 3200, and that makes for a lousey drive. The manual choke is wide open. my 79 1500 was smelling like gas badly. Noticed the water controlled choke was basicaly hanging by one screw. So, like a fool, I disasembled the choke while I was in there, just to see if everything was ok. Now the stupid part: I'm not sure if I lost it, or if it was never there, but there's no heat mass. Now my question is, it's nice and warm here in NH now, being spring and all; Do I even need a choke, or can I just seal off the holes in the carb? and how hard is it... MORE

Well after posting the message I cooled off and went back out and looked things over. I know that if the pistons open too quickly the engine will get a lot of fuel and not that much air. So I fiddle with the mixture nut and watched the piston when the throttle was opened. The pistons rose but the headers started to glow red! Argghh, I thought I'd timed the cam in better than that. Has anyone had a vernier cam gear slip on them? I don't remember a torque value on the securing screws, it's the Kent gear.... MORE

Just to shed some of my personal experience in this area. I had to tackle this area personally in the last week or so. If you follow some of the parts supplier's diagrams you might end up installing this little pesky item backwards. Best advice is, as always, follow your original repair manual. In my case, it's a Sprite Mark I with a 948 engine. If you stop to think for a moment, and ask yourself, what is the logical purpose for this (oil thrower) item? Hi, Ken... 1275's ran with no exhaust valve seals for better cooling (residual oiling) of the stems. Guess they figured the combustion gasses would be "outbound" in any case instead of "sucking" as in the case of the inlet valve. It would make sense to me to install the oil thrower concave side "in", convex side "out" but I haven't got the manual at hand and haven't built an engine in 20 years so I'll leave this one to another more "current" than I in this respect! :) Cap'n. The gasket set for my 1275 Midget engine came with 4 rubber "boots" which are oil seals for the inlet valve stems. The set also included 5 (!) of the small o-rings which I thought were for teh earlier 1098 motors where they were used on inlet and exhaust. Shouldm I be installing 4 of these o-rings on my exhaust valves in addition to the 4 boots on the inlet guides? The manual is ambiguous. Also, the manual says to install the oil thrower in the timing chest concave side out - then shows a picture of it installed... MORE

I don't think so, Tom. Considering what you paid, if it's in the decent mechanical shape claimed, I think you did OK for what you paid, personally. I owned a de-smogged '72 until a certain girl ran a Stop sign one night and her insurance co. put me into a new Fiat 1/9. Pull the head and shave it to bring the Comp. Ratio up to no more than 9.5-1, (mine was 10-1 but we had "manly" gas available at that time!:) and purchase a set of 1.75 HS4's suitably calibrated as in Stage 1 of the Special Tuning... MORE

Ken, When you are measuring the end float on the cam are you doing it with the cam drive gear torque to spec? Without the gear in place, yes you will have plenty of end float. The cam drive gear pulls the cam forward towards the triangular plate. Hi all, I picked up a 1275 (73 Midget) engine for my Morris Minor project car. Since it arrived in four boxes a few parts were missing (so I've discovered) One of these was the small triangular(ish) drive flange which connects the camshaft to the oil pump. A new oil pump and flange were obtained (along with loads of other stuff for a complete rebuild). After assembling the oil pump, camshaft and the triangular camshaft retaining plate I find I have about 1/8" or so of endfloat where the spec is 4 to 7 thou! The retaining plate is... MORE

Hi Guys, I decided to bite the bullet and strip the whole car back to the tub rather than do it bit at a time. I am thinking now of getting the whole thing professionally blasted or chemically dipped to save a lot of manual labor. Has anybody got experience with this or a rough idea of the costs involved? Hi I have changed to a manual choke in my 1500 Midget I was curious to see where most of you have mounted your choke cable. In the dash is not an option, I wnat to keep it reversable. and I was hoping not to have to put a hole in any interior panels , but that may be the best place, on passenger side? Thanks Mike. Thanks Don - the radio shack behind the dash idea is a good suggestion, rather than putting a hole in the dash. The lighter is listed as an option in the manual, so I am guessing there might even be existing leads ready to connect. Rather than go from the battery or fuse box, I was thinking I would want to hook it up to a point in the circuitry after the accessories key switch (does my car even have an accesories key switch?) so that when my car was off, any portable device left plugged in would not... Chris... I think it's strictly a matter of waiting for the "right" person to come along (ebay?). The 10cc (2" main) is the "preferred" engine for those restoring originally equipped 1098 machines. It is also the smoothest running Series A (IMHO). They've got a silky smooth, "sweet" exhaust note not found in the more "square" motors. My BE came equipped with a "10cc". Should there be any sideways slack on the bolt in each end of the radius arms or should they be tight. I have just fitted new arms and they have rather a big sideways slack/movement on the bolts each end. Should i make up some spacers to rid the slack. Tensile strength B.S.S. Grade 'T' 55-65 T/in (850-1005mPa). I'm not sure off hand what the actual specs for other grades are, but I believe SAE 5 is equivalent to Grade S (Metric 8.8) and SAE 8 = Grade V Metric 10.9 Regards David I couldn't remember what the "something" was - it's been a while since I saw them off the car.
