Hi, Don...
Well, I have to admit I am doing most of
this from memory of what I had on my
po'd '74.....this was like 20+ years ago!!
Naturally, when I looked at all that stuff
cluttering up the engine compartment, I
barfed! Then I took it all off, cut the restrictors on the carbs, got a
ventilated/
filtered oil filler cap and set up a
"ventilated" rather than "evacuated" system.
But as Gerard and
many others have correctly pointed out,
a properly working PCV system is a "good
thing" in more than one respect.
Yes...the engine breathes in via the
line from the charcoal cannister to the
valve cover. The same charcoal one uses
in fish tanks can be used to renew the
charcoal in the cannister, BTW.
Otherwise:
The engine "sucks" through the intake
system via the carbs. through the line
from the timing case "cannister" and
I do not recall any fitting (compression or
otherwise) in this line between the
"cannister" and the "Y" fitting. So I think
this fitting you talk of in peculiar to your
vehicle but, it just may be peculiar to
California cars as their emissions regs.

So this fitting may belong on a CA car.
I don't know. Can't see any harm in
trying it both ways, though. If you should
start sucking oil after you remove this
fitting, you'll see it as bluish smoke coming out the exhaust pipe.
When you first mentioned this fitting, the
first thing that came to mind was a PCV
valve of some sort.
If you have the metal "restrictors" on the
bottom of the carbs. that limit adjustment
of the jet adjusting nuts, you can "cut"
these to allow for a richer setting. This
will overcome any "lean surge" you may
be experiencing in "cruise", IF this is
the cause of those "flat spots" you "feel"
at 3,000 rpm.....usually, it is.
