I need help. Here's what happened.
Began restoration about 10 years ago. Thought it would go faster
than it did, so early on I had the engine done. It was built by Dave
Tabor of Comptune, the guys who built all the SCCA champ 1275
motors. Anyway, I told Dave I wanted a 1967 street spec high
compression engine. I know he used a factory crank and cam. I
believe he used aftermarket pistons that he preferred with a
compression of about 8.9 to 1. He used a factory non-emission head,
redone to run unleaded. Job was completed many years ago and
Comptune is long out of business.
After YEARS of work, I was getting close to firing the motor (maybe
even this weekend!). Needed to install the distributor, so I was
finding top dead center on compression for number one cylinder by the
usual fourth gear push. To make a long story short, the crank will
not turn over. I am able to get the crank to rotate about 345-350
degrees, back and forth. But instead of turning over, it locks up
tight. Have done some playing around with different gears, neutral
push, etc to rule out tranny and rear end. It sure appears to be the
motor.
Over the last several weeks, I have been squirting a bit of oil in
the cylinders. When I move it back and forth, it moves nicely. But
it most certainly will not turn over the final degrees. I can't
believe someone as good as Tabor wouldn't hand crank the engine, but
I wasn't there, and never did myself.
Any ideas? Any suggestions as to how to proceed? Any guesses as to
what the problem is?
Thanks much........Paul
