Rich... Your fuel pressure setting is correct. There is some falling off in pressure between pump and carb. I've been using low pressure (2.5-4.0) Facets for many moons now with stock float valves...no problems. Same with previous Vizardized Series A with 90hp to rear wheels and Weber "45" except pump was Facet 6psi or so through 2.5 pressure regulator. Stock float valves in this case also. No problems. What pressure does your pump initially put out? What "color" would appear on a NEW set of spark plugs on your car after a hard run, preferably up a reasonably sloped... MORE

I am hoping someone can help me with a problem I have obtaining a key set for my 1971 Midget. I purchased a lock set consisting of the two doors and boot lock, all with matching FS keys. I am now trying to purchase either just the lock barrel or the complete ignition switch (located in the middle of the dashboard) with the same FS key number as the doors. I have spoken to most of the suppliers such as Moss, Brown & Gammons etc. but none will sell me the ignition barrel with a specific key number. I... MORE

Hi Drew, My BMC workshop manual for my Mk2 Sprite gives the working load as 750 lb. and the spring rate as 271 lb. in. FWIW they state that the free length is 9.4 in. and the mean coil diameter is 3.625 in. Nelson HAN6L11639 "Nelson Wittstock" 32589... MORE

I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! (1275 Metros probably had them as well, those that didn't use Ducellier) Being non-standard/original, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to you though, Nigel! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32459... Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Anyone know what kind of money this is worth? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 32450... MORE

Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE

Also, be careful how you (or careless tyre fitters) jack the rear of the car up - try and avoid putting load on the drain plug - it's not unknown for the female threads to strip when this is done - you DON'T want to have to deal with that! David "David Jacobs" 32360... MORE

Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock, rebuilt kingping, bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE

That's usually a pretty easy fix. You can try two things, one at a time. Drain out the oil. Then use a tooth brush and solvent to clean out the threads in the housing. Frequently there are little bits of "stuff" there! Clean the drain plug so it has no trash bits in the threads and wrap it with teflon tape, like the plumbers use, and put the plug back in. Does the trick about 90% of the time. For the remaining 5 or 10%, do the hole cleaning bit AFTER you have run a 1/2" pipe tap in... MORE

So I can dump the spacers on the rear mountings with no ill effects?. BTW anyone know where the wring loom runs? my shall is now in primer waiting for colour, and I have dug the loom out, had a look at it and found it to be serviceable, and I now realize I have no idea where it runs. I vaguely remember the section hath runs to the rear ran down the drivers side (UK car) and there was a bit that ran under the dash witch seems to plug into the front loom on the passenger side... Which way is it "almost vertical"? The eye of the spring should be behind a vertical line from the eye of the mounting point. Even if it is only very slightly forward of the mounting point it will prevent the shackle moving into the right angle and the spring will never settle to give the correct ride height. If the shackle is even slanted a little forward then use a pry bar to flip the shackle so that it points rearwards. Do this with the wheels on the ground (or on ramps), not with the axle hanging on the... MORE

I'm having as problem removing the brass nut for the fuel line coming out of the tank. The tank is now off the car but the nut refuses to budge after several days of penetrating oil (Kroil) soaking. Part of the problem is that the nut is an odd size and none of my wrenches/spanners fit it properly. It is within a few thou of .600 inches and this does not match up to fractional sizes. 19/32 is as close as I can find and at that size I have only an open end wrench. I purchased my Sprite... MORE

My 2 cents worth. I don't think there is a exact reading, but I think 120-160 is normal. A compression test is more of a overall test and should be done twice. The first time, just pull the plugs and do it. The second time, squirt some oil in each cylinder and do the test again. The results will show condition and any problems, then there are leakdown test, etc. The readings should be within 10 percent for high and low. If there are any problems, like yours of cylinder 3 & 4 being low, the oil test will... MORE

"Maybe condensation...." Absolutely!! As previously mentioned... a normal part of start up from cold in the morning, most definitely with a car left outside overnight, and most definitely in cool, damp weather. Problem is, I'm "over here", Guy Weller is "over there" and Jens is somewhere else! So we can't see what Jens is looking at under these circumstances in terms of "extent". Is it normal, or "abe normal" (courtesy, "Young Frankenstein":) It sounds abnormal considering it happens every morning to a great extent, whether the ambient air is "dry" or "wet". The engine warms up after a couple... MORE

Hi Guy, I suspect that you have some calipers that are ready for a rebuild. These pistons don't retract as the new cars do, but merely relax. If the dust seals are stiff and totally dried out it will inhibit the relaxing of the pads from the rotors. I rebuild a lot of these calipers and sometimes it's almost impossible to get out the pistons because there's 40 years of crud and dried up rubber involved. Another possibility on the calipers is the m/cyl is holding too much pressure on the system with it's internal residual valve. A suggestion... MORE

Hi list, I have huffaker spec 1 1/4" HS2's on my 948 competion motor. When I look in the air rams I see a fountain of un-atomized fuel coming up around the needle of the front carb while running. No fuel is visible when looking in the rear carb. I'm guessing the front float bowl needle is not shutting off and pressure is building up and forcing the fuel in the carb. I have a holley pressure regulater that I think I have adjusted to the minimum pressure (about 1 psi) Is this likely the cause? (I have new... MORE

My reasoning for going with a DCOE is for the following: 1. It was originally fed by a Zenith Stromberg carb for the 1500 midgets. I'm doing a complete restoration on the car, however, between the engine that came with the car (with a thrown rod) and the one I purchased to rebuild, neither came with a carburetor or a distributor. 2. I want to get rid of the zenith stromberg =) The engine is a basic 1500 engine. Stock cam in it, 9:1 compression and .020" overbore from the rebuild. Currently no head porting or anything done to... I had a similar problem with my Midget last week. It turned out to be an electrical problem: the points kept loosening, so there was not much of a spark. Adjusted the gap, and tightened everything up properly, and she now runs a treat!! We were in Scotland at the time, and had a 400 mile journey home. We got back OK, and all is now well Margaret, South Lincolnshire (UK) "Margaret Brock" 31916... MORE

Stewart... Here again...not a 1500 kinda guy but I think the 1500 uses a twin 40DCOE set-up as "the conversion". At today's prices, I would think re-curving your current dizzy might be as expensive (or nearly so) as getting a proper ballpark mechanical (only) curve as might be found or suggested by someone like www.tsimportedautomotive.com or www.aptfast.com Cap'n. I've been thinking about installing a DCOE onto my 1500 Midget, and they say you need to convert to fully mechanical advance. I've looked at replacing with the Mallory Unilite distributor, but it's a bit expensive. Has anyone done a DCOE install and just recurved the original distributor? Or does anyone have more information on recurving one of these distributors? any help would be greatly appreciated. '79 MG Midget Chris "Chris" 31846... MORE
