Dear Listers, Just something interesting I have become aware of lately, I wonder if it is a Southern California fad or have you all seen it? It is a sport called Drifting. The object is to take a car around a closed course at high speed (sometimes as much as 100 mph) and throw it into a huge 4 wheel drift for as far as possible. No, because what is happening is that the clamps pull the header rail down onto the top of the screen at the wrong angle, - sort of tilted backwards. One symptom of this is the tendancy for the little lug of the clamp to try and jump to the wrong (front) side of the narrow upstand on the rear edge of the screen top rail. Adjusting the wear out of the pivot points means that the header rail is presented to the screen top rail at the correct angle for the clamps to work. I am not argueing this... MORE
Margaret (and others) I am pretty sure that this alsao has something to do with wear in the pivot points and hinges of the frame. This is why I think this... When you operate the clamps on the header rail it has the effect of tilting the front hood rail backwards so that it contacts the metal of the header rail rather than sitting squarely on top of the rubber seal. This is aggrivated by overtight hood fabric, but more significantly by worn pivot points, particularly in the short metal arms that screw to the header rail. I am... MORE

My keys suck. They suck so bad, I think it would be difficult to make a good copy of my keys. Something about a copy of crap is still crap? The ex Cap'n wrote...."Wrynose" You people "over there" have got the coole st names for things! :) My favourite in the Lake district was the "Hardknot" pass. Single track with passing points. Longish straights and a few hairpins. I s eem to remember it finishes with cattle grids and a chicane though a farmya rd type environs, - solid granite walls. I thought I was saving petrol by trying to coast down the mountain, but wh en the brakes overheated and I had no engine braking I found out how hard t he granite walls of the barn were.... MORE

It is kind of sad to see someone out of ignorance paying exorbitant prices for something readily available in their local hardware store... Case in point. On ebay at the moment are a set of four plugs to fill the head of a Midget after removing the Air Pump and Rail. There are 5 bids and the current price is at $20.50. The four plugs are: Standard 1/4" brass flare plugs available at Orchard Supply or any ACE hardware store for less than 50 cents each. I have used them on my 74 when I removed the smog air... MORE

Remind me never to take these apart again, what a job getting the rev counter bezel back again. The inner disk just would not drop in, it had sprung out never to go back. Two G clamps and a small hammer persuaded it to reseat. Found a selection of gasket material by the yard to make all new seals. Have tried 12 v 5 watt side light bulbs, much improved but they are bayonet connectors not MES so am working on adaptor. First choice is to dismantle 5 w bulb and unsolder it to give a glass envelope with... MORE
Terry, On the several that I have dismantled, they have all had mastic between bezel and glass, O-ring between glass and the next ring in, and an 0-ring between the case and the metal dashboard. I don't think there is supposed to be an O-ring behind the metal reflector ring. It is stepped and fits against the rim of the case, leaving a gap between it and the dial face to let the light through. One tip here is that you should save discarded O rings from the rear hubs as these will fit around the tach and speedo... MORE
Terry... I agree with Nigel asking you why all this for bulb replacement but I will answer to the extent I can 'cause obviously it's already out of the car!! :):) OK... 1. Yes (O-ring, gasket, rubber washer, bit of silicone, whatever! :) 2. Have not seen an O-ring between instrument and panel before. But I don't see why you could not do this, either. 3. Hi I would like to see what speed I am doing in the dark so Speedo is out and apart. 1972 RWA midget Questions Chrome bezel is filled with black gunge at rear, is this the remnants of an 0 ring that seals the bezel to the glass? Is there an 0 ring between the Speedo and dash board? The inside of the Speedo is sky blue from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock and white for the other half. Is this correct and why? Two points from the UK, Nigel is right that "National Insurance" (tax) is around 8% (actually slightly more) but this is not hypothecated to the Health Service. UK governments do not use tax in this way, but pool all tax income and then divide it up between the various "needs", so it is not really possible to say how much of each revenue source goes to each service. My second point is that, although the UK health service has its failings, it is at least free at the point of delivery, and this I think is a real plus... MORE
Will a hinged hood (top) off of a 1975 Midget fit on a 1966 Midget? What is required to use the later folding top? The interior three bolt mounting points just front of the wheel wells and? Thank you to all who responded to my request for advice. I think that a briken core plug sounds quite likely as I have noticed that some have already been replaced. Luckily there is an MG specialist a few miles from where I live and I am taking it there this weekend so they can inspect what needs doing. thank goodness I have bought a car that has plenty of specialist help around: just try finding parts for a 1972 Audi 100, which was my previous transport(now sold!). I was thinking in terms of the dyno for correct needle selection, and correct setting of the distributor. Although not totally ignorant, I do not have the experience to set up either properly myself. (there goes the perfectionist again!) I also liked the sound of those rimflo valves, which, together with a few simple head mods, can bring even more of the 'fun factor'. Roger... Over here, the self-contained (within the distributor) electronic ignition is called "PerTronix". Over there, it is known by another name and dammit, I cannot think of it but I am sure a UK lister will help me out here (hopefully). Like most new things, the PerTronix (a Hall Effect Device) had it's share of teething problems when new in terms of failure's. Since I have been using one for the last 3 years or so, I've had no problems. There is an upgraded version out now for most applications called (surprise!), the PerTronix II...which compensates for reduced dwell... MORE

Lost my low & high beam headlights, except for quick high beam flasher which I have to maually pull back on and manually hold back to activate the high beams. 90 Dodge Dynasty, tried replacing steering column mounted multi-function dimmer switch(no luck but interestingly, the switch was a LUCAS<PRINCE OF DARKNESS SWITCH! headlight in/out switch but it was replaced about 5-6 yrs ago. Also I might take it by Circut City where about 7 yrs ago they customized the wiring so that whenever the ignition was turned off, the lights would automatically go off even if they were left...
