I've been meaning to post this FWIW, but have forgotten for a few months. My Sprite began a random misfire. Checked all the usual culprits, but couldn't find the problem. I didn't suspect the spark plugs because they were only a few thousand miles old, and they looked perfect - light brown insulators, no visible cracks or tracking. Thanks, mitch. Your suggestion worked perfectly. Actually I just used a couple wire ties to hold the tranny up, and the engine slipped right back in - no sweat. (Sorry, Ed). I'd also like to put in a plug for a new-to-me parts supplier. When I had the engine sitting on the floor, I realized I should have ordered a new flywheel ring gear. I finally have my 1500 back on the road and am able to drive it agian after 16 years of having it in bits. I have a number of questions, some are 1500 only and some will be relavnt to late 1275. First one, What RPM is 60MPH? My car is alagedly giving 60MPH at 4K RPM in 4th gear, given I was on the motorway keeping up with traffic and overtaking some of it I am not convinced it is reading right! at points it was reading close to 70, others lower than 60, but the revs remained... Does anybody know about setting the (2) air screws on a Weber dcoe sidedraft carb on my '75 Midget 1500, it's running rich, i put in new plugs & wires, i aqquired the car with the carb. on it. the screws are 1 1/2 turn out. It has headers and has been de-smogged. It has a points distributer also. Also i took the spedo cable off because the neadle was 'hopping' and oiled it, now it doesn't work, any idea?? Thank you. The Organization Of Spridget Handymen in Transit got together yesterday to swap out Larry Macy's engine. Larry got a rebuilt (A wedding present? How thoughtful.) and it was about time to do the deed. Kevin and Rob Valentine, Phil Nase (?), Bill Gilroy and I showed up at Larry's. I understand that Frank Clarici had some problems on the way back from Carlisle so he couldn't make it. Hello, Well it's a sad day I have to sell my Sprite. Life and school don't seem to agree with my little English car. I rebuilt the engine recently and I am trying to sort everything out before I try starting it. I took the plugs out, I thopught I primed the pump, and then I cranked the engine untill the battery was half dead still no oil pressure. Before anyone asks, I put three quarts of oil in already and there is a new filter installed, and the oil cooler is all hooked up. Whats wrong with this picture? "gan5ub91179g" 36936... MORE
I recently purchased a basket case MG but I got a great deal!! So anyways.. 73 1275 Midget starts, runs, timing is good, spark is good etc... Car drives gets up to speed. Gets hot after about 2-3 miles runs like garbage. So I checked the thermostat looked like crap so I replaced it. I am now trying to figure out which way does the water flow on this motor? Does the radiator supply from the bottom or the top? Trying to figure out if they had the thermostat in backwards really..or if the water pump is hosed. Jeremy... MORE
I have a 1500 US Spec and had that same occurance a long time ago. I thought I had a vapor lock so I did the old shade tree trick. I walked over to the closest stop-n-rob (mini market which sells petrol for you guys on the other side of the pond) and got my self a bag of ice. My car recently broken down and I was hoping somebody might be able to give some idea of the likely fault and how to fix it. After being run fairly hard for about 30 mins then pulling up to traffic lights my '76 1500cc Midget had very little power when I tried to pull away from lights. Pressing the accelerator made neighter the speed increase or the Revs. Instead it just made the engine sound rougher. This is my first posting here and it is just a quick note to introduce myself. I have at last bowed to constant pressure from the FPO to get rid of the Panther motorcycle combination (as so many men did in the early 60's when the BL Mini arrived) and get a 'sporty' car that she too can enjoy. Rick, I put on a glass pack for a Camaro on my 1500 (stock motor). It;s a 2 inch pipe and gives the little beast a snarly AND deep note. A little loud but not enough to do anything about. Best part was the $28 buck it cost. Though much longer it fit nicely where the stock resonator went so the system goes straight out on the Drivers side. Was also able to use the stock hanger points. Could be lots of things. Check the easy stuff first. Plugs, plug wires, coil. Also check that the low voltage connections to the distributor and coil are sound. Tell us what's been checked/tried so far? "joe blxfstz" 36786... MORE

It didn't roll yesterday when I set the "rollers" on my 1.5 set-up and hasn't in 42 years so I sorta doubt it, most especially since parking brakes and wheel chocks were "invented". Unless you got a clutch fan, do it my way and you won't need a chock anyway. Just leave it in neutr al and set the parking brake....OK!! If it makes you feel better, put a chock(s) under a wheel....or dead cat(s)! Now, take the damn plugs out so the engine... MORE
Do them .012" (on the loose side)"cold" From the front of the engine... Do 1 with 8 fully open.... Do 2 with 7 fully open.... Do 3 with 6 fully open.... Get the idea...each adds up to 9. The "Ford" B-24's leaked fuel internally.... Ford cut corners in their construction. Consolidated found them out and turned 'em in to the government since Consolidated intially got some "heat" on this. Forgot what the outcome was. Listers - The enigine/trans is a 1963 all aluminum Buick V8, 215 ci. (I'm told the 4barrel carbed ones are high compression, something like 11 to 1 and are good for a stock 200hp) The trans is a Borg-Warner T-50, aluminum 5 speed, I think it's from a late 70's Chevy V8 Monza. The added frame rails are 2" square steel tube, not sure I needed that much added to the sides of the original frame rails (probably could have used a 1" x 2" on it's side) but boy did it ever stiffen up after they were installed.... If you do it this way, you can easily use the FIND function of Word to search the document for, say "ignition" or "compression," Assuming you paste every useable e-mail into the same document. Or, you could start a new document for each topic/ thread, then have a more defined filing system.
