Appreciate the insight. The last 1275 I drove was a 73 back in 1981. Didn't know jack about such cars so comparison's are impossible.
I was planning to lower the rear of the car with a block arrangement that raises the rear axle where it attaches to the spring. Since fitting the new wheels and tires I'm not so sure about this. I had to do some sugery on the rear to eliminate the "tuck-in" flange for clearance. The front wheels were even worse. Had to raise the wheel cutout an inch. Will probably flair them.
Do you know of any trans kits for the 1500 to give it longer legs? My dream is to pack the wife and a small bag and hit Galena or Central WI for weekends. If the manual is correct, highway speeds translate to 3500 rpm's plus which doesn't sit well with me. I know Rivergate offers the B210 conversion but my understanding is that it's only for the 1275. The only other option I've seen was on-line. Somebody's Midget page showed a Spitfire OD fitted. Had to widen the drive tunnel and install extra bracing etc. Not convinced that's the best way to go.
FWIW-I bought my car with the sole purpose of driving it as much as practical. I am no purist. If modern technology (or any technology for that matter) provides improvement to the basic design, I'm there! I'm running a 40,000 volt coil, electric fan, front tube shocks and upgraded electronic ignition with a GM Pick up truck alternator of 62 amps (tip of the wrench to the "Teglerizer")output. I plan to go to twin SU's next season and will probably get some head work done as well. I paid $500 bucks for the car and have replaced every mechanical component on it (mostly while job searching). With no mechanical background to speak of I did all the work myself except the ignition upgrade. Every time I drive the car I am constanly blown away that I'm actually doing it! Bottom line, I have loved nearly every minute of it and get wait to get the ugly little beast painted decently.
