After stripping off the front end outer metal work and cleaning the engine
compartment I discovered there is a crack in the transmission bell housing.
The tab like area at the top of the clutch bell housing where the top two
bolts are located has a horizontal crack below them.. It does not appear to
be a major structural problem once the transmission bell housing is bolted
on as all other areas and bolts are sound. It looks like an easy in place
weld job. Is it possible to weld the aluminum housing material?
Some PO strangeness as usual to clean up and ponder why. The previous
owner installed a new radiator, expansion tank, thermostat housing,
thermostat, hoses, and a new head but not a $23.00 dollar water pump whose
bearings are worn and leaking water past them and most likely was
responsible for the problem in the first place. . . go figure. Perhaps the
$15.00 dollar set of MG logo tire air caps and $16.00 MG logo mud flaps were
higher on his priority list. ;-)
The hatchet job of metal cutting to install speakers in the side panel of
the foot wells was charming, seeing that area is not the best weather proof
environment for speakers. Drill a 3/4 inch hole and use hand metal sheers to
do a 6" circle, a nice series of razor sharp points that if broken off
would make nice pointed exacto knife blades. Life in Spridget land. Me . . .
I just towed it 55 miles with the rear wheels on a dolly and made toast of
the keyed front wheel lock. It must have been a subconscious desire to
experience the challenge of removing the steering column and drilling out
snap off bolts.
