Yes, that is a tricky job. The 1/2" open end is what you need but be careful because of lack of space down there you can only turn it a couple flats at a time. Getting the nut back on...................... Well that's the real challenge. If you are doing it for the first time be prepared to spend some time getting it right. It took me a few times walking away and taking a break from it. You need hands that are not too large and get one had down there, one on each side, with your fingers on... MORE
Guy I've given up with those stupid poxy 'e' clips things, I don't have time to piss about looking for slim machined recesses - I want circlips on so I can get on with the next job! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 30647... MORE
Bill Strangely enough, I had planned on doing work on my rear axle yesterday, mainly to install the brake pipes but I had a few other jobs to do as well, such as re-installing the circlip that 'pinged' off! I had already bought two of the original type circlips for this and also bought some circlip pliers for the job. I have to say it was about a 5 second job to install those circlips - went on sweet as a nut - no problems, so much so I took the other 'e' clip off and installed the other... MORE
Hi James, welcome to the group. Do you have any pics of the car you'd like to post? The extra hood fastener was a factory-fit item but only for a short time at the beginning of production of that style of hood. Some people find it keeps the hood in better shape than just the velcro, and you can easily get the extra body stud if you end up getting that type of hood. Regards David "David Jacobs" 30624... MORE
Bill, A couple of points that may help: The "E" -clip goes on with the open gap towards the bleed screw. There is a very slight groove between the axle casing and the back plate that allows the edge of the clip to fit the space between the wheel cylinder and the axle casing. There are various techniques. I have found that if you can get the edges of the 3 lugs just against the edge of the wheel cylinder casting and then put a large socket against and give it a "light tap with a heavy hammer" it... Mark, Mine wasn't a new pump, at least it was about 5 years old. I found out by swapping parts out., after I had checked all of the carb settings etc. When I changed the pump the problem was cured. Since the old pump still seemed to push fuel through I got inquisitive and dismantled it to see how it worked, Sure enough, there was a short tear in the diaphragm. Bit like someone with a fault heart valve, it pumped well enough until it was asked to run uphill. Guy "Guy Weller" 30592... MORE
David... One other advantage of "burning it out" is a nice (steam) cleaning of the combustion chamber. Of course, if it really runs badly a draining procedure (per David) is definitely in the cards. I steam the combustion chambers out ea. spring via the carbs and an old Windex bottle filled with distilled water. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30564... MORE
Dave... Head down to your local automotive store and pick up a couple of bottles of "dry gas" (isopropyl alchohol or whatever it really is!:) and dump 'em in. Then, fill it up. This should do the trick but the real question is..where did all the water come from? :( Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30551... MORE
Listers - (sounds like something you call people after a night on a booze cruise) I finally got my car home, created a folder in the photo section ("Ricks 75") and uploaded a photo... Figured out what caused the PO from finishing the restoration, he had snapped 2 bolts off while removing the passenger side front shock for some reason, soaking in WD40 for a couple of days and small amount of heat and the stubs came right out. The car is in supprisingly good shape (for Wisconsin), the previous owner towed it up from New Mexico, so it... MORE

Jim, I have a '59 that was old English White WT.3, with Cherry Red interior. Now Competition Yellow with Black interior. I can send you a piece of the orig. Cherry Red interior that you can match to the Moss seat kits if you wish. The Cherry Red exterior was RD.4 and came with the Cherry Red seats with White piping. The door seals and mats were also Cherry Red according to my " BMC Body Exterior and Main Trim Colour Combinations." I also have a listing that the Exterior color was ICI #3102 and Old Rinshed-Mason #U5553R....What ever... MORE

Hood & Bonnet are similar. A hood is something attached to a coat to keep the head warm. A bonnet is a form of head-dress no longer worn, except by small babies. Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) "May you be in Heaven half an hour before the Devil knows you're dead" mmbrock88@... 30356... MORE
A "clip" is a common term in auto salvage yards...breakers to the Brits, and wreckin' yards in Texas. A front clip would be the front fenders, hood, (wings, bonnet) and grille bumpers, lights etc, to replace a whole front end damaged in an accident. A rear clip would be the rear fenders, deck lid (wings, boot) and connecting bits with the bumpers and lights to fix a vehicle that had been rear ended. A bugeye clip would be added to a spridget that had been prepared by sling off the appropriate parts and welding or in the case of... MORE
NO, no, Jim!!! Not my idea or my phrase. I'm just the messenger. "Clip" is what Jon Peters of Sports & Classics called it, when I initially asked about it as a "fibreglass BE external one piece rear body part". I actually saw this first advertised in a MiniMania flyer. Can't recall whether they referred to it as a "clip", though. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30297... MORE
"...you bloody well made it up! :)" Not at all, Nigel!! :) When Jon referred to this part as a "clip", I had no idea what the hell he was talking about at first. Since my '67 came with a BE steel bonnet on it, the rear fibreglass piece looked like the natural thing to do to me. After removing the external panels, I probably would have gone with adhesives for attachment, along with what was required for "trimming", most especially in consideration of the "longer" cockpit area of the '67, fold-down top, etc. (The car would have looked... So, how does one attach such a clip? Does the old clip have to come off? Is it structurally sound? I'm intrigued... Jeff Boatright 30292... MORE

Robbie, I think the start point is to loosen the little pinch bolts on the throttle and the choke connecting rods, so that the two carbs can move independently. Then check that the piston in each will lift and drop back down again cleanly, without catching or sticking. If not, then loosening and re-tightening the two screws that hold the piston chamber on may help to centre it. More likely you will need to centre the jets. There is a special tool but it realy isnt necessary. Just loosen the larger (upper) nut on the jet by a half... MORE
Yep... Had one of Jon's rear clips, as my '67 came with a BE bonnet and I was going to do the rear end BE-wise but the car met it's demise pre-maturely. My rear clip finally went to a guy in CA. It was good (heavy) quality. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30184... MORE
Rob C. "Stickyness" IS usually the sign of a jet (or slightly bent needle) not exactly centered. SU makes a "Tuning Tool Set" ($15?) which has a jet centering tool which will line this little critter up perfectly. If this doesn't free things up, most likely a slightly bent needle, then. It is important to keep the same suction valve with the same suction chamber. I am told these are "matched" at the factory. There should be no sticking between valve and chamber when these parts are clean of all varnish/fuel deposit which may have accumulated over use/time. Cap'n.... MORE
Stephen King has a new 15 episode series coming out on ABC, Wednesday 3/3. Check your local guides for times It is called Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital. Described as a cross between ER and the Shining, I personally hope it is in the true vein of Stephen King. Many times, television has a tendency to trivialize the vision of horror that King tries to envision on the small screen. If it hits the tube late enough, perhaps there will be a better chance of it being true to the writers theme. Of course, Beavis and Butthead coming on at... MORE
I have 2 main mechanical issues I will need to fix before doing any real driving. (I have many other non-mechanical issues, some even just mental). 1. Brake pedal needs "pumped" to build up pressure. Once I pump it a few times I can hold it down and it stays firmly (doesn't go all the way to the floor no matter how hard I push). Before I pump it, it goes all the way to the floor. When I let off the brakes, and drive for a bit, I need to go through the whole process again. I don't... MORE
