Terry I have a batch of those clips, they seem to work ok for me, I pop rivetted =3D=0D one onto piece of scrap steel and tried up the sill strip and it seemed to hold =3D=0D it in position. If I get time this evening, I'll take a photograph of one of the clips and =3D=0D post it in my folder for you to look at. Don't know enough about lever arm shocks to help you on that one. Hi Trying to put the 'chrome' strip back on the sill of 1972 midget using new retaining clips. The ones supplied are far too small and fail to retain th e strip, good job I tried them first before pop riveting them to the sill. Anyone else had this problem or is this just a bad batch of clips. I get them from a local MG bit and pieces enthusiasts shop, think they come from same source as MGOC. I got an original BMC workshop manual for Midget/Spri te for =A310 from him yesterday. Just had to re exchange... MORE

Roger Yeah I so hate having to do that! This comment was made in frustration after a 'head down' lack of progress day. You know those kind of days, I'm sure we've all had them. You spend the entire day in the garage and make no progress at all, due to one stuck nut/screw/name your devil. Made even more frustrating knowing there was so many others things I can be getting on with. The choice is there, do you continue with said stuckness, or do you just think, right I'll shift that problem over to someone else and get... MORE

Hi Margaret ("over there":)! With few exceptions, the list has been very quiet over the last 15 days or so. This includes the yahoo Bugeye list as well as the Spridget autox. list. Why? Well it's gotten colder and we've turned the clocks back for one but, really not sure. Coincident events would include the awful fires in our state of California on our west coast wherein 3600 homes have been lost. Lot of people "hurting" Quite a few of our listers hail from out that way I believe. And of course, whether conciously or subconciously, we are all... MORE

Yes... Bill Perry does favor the new synthetic oils as they are simply superior to the mineral oil based products, which BTW are pretty damn good themselves these days. Synthetic also allows for MUCH easier shifting of the box in cold weather, especially subsequent to initial start after the car has been sitting in freezing temps. overnight. However, their "slipperiness" and flow characteristics virtually guarantee that in all cases, you will either "lose" more or "burn" more in either event, the loss of synchronizer action in the gearbox already having been discussed. I had a minor leak in the... MORE

Chris... Interesting question however, did you know that a wider .015, instead of .012 clearance is recommended by the factory for the stock cam when used in "performance" circumstances? I guess the .012 is used for more quiet running under normal or low rpm street applications when top rpm useage will be brief, rather than under cirumstances wherein continuous high rpm running and attendant swelling of parts due to heat is expected. Also, under the latter circumstances, "burning" of a valve will be less likely as well. And, of course, with the wider cleanance, you get faster acceleration ("ramp"... MORE

Listers, one and all. For the past few years we've had a group of enthusiasts gather in Madison WI (USA) for a bit of post-Thanksgiving turkey Sprite dismantling and/or rebuilding called Save Our Sprites. These "events" take place the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28,29 this year) and are viewable over the internet through some video magic. (details later) We hope to improve that this year with faster service for better interaction. In the past, those who wanted to contribute, but couldn't attend, offered food and beverage from their locality. We've had some great variety from scrapple to... MORE

Martyn...you misunderstand. The spring over the air valve in the SU carb determines mainly when the air valve reaches the full open position with respect to "redline" assuming all other things equal. This is it's only purpose. As cam profile duration and lift increase (over "stock") so shall vacuum produced by the engine at lower rpms DECREASE. IOW......at lower rpm (idle) the engine will "suck" LESS, all else being equal. With respect to your problem, vacuum in this case is working FOR you, not against you. Make sure your throttle return springs are properly hooked up and that the... MORE

Only three miles eh. Well you could have been toast very quickly if the wind had taken off in your direction. Have seen your coverage on the news. We in BC just went through major fires in our province. All out now, but major destruction. We only lost one or two hundred homes in the Kelowna area and no lives. They were saying some of our Canadian air tankers were set to head down to SoCal and even our firemen were waiting for that call as well. Hope it doesn't get to that. Take care. Do you smell gas when driving of if the car is parked? If no puddles, no smell, no pools of fluid on the engine then are you sure you are losing fuel? Could it be the gauge? Fill it up drive home...Park it...next day go back and fill her up again. How much is gone? More than normal for that trip? Could someone be stealing your gas out of the tank? Yes, Martyn...agreed. Assuming the cam is properly timed in in accordance with previous post, I would at this point expect an induction leak(s) of some kind. VP3 cam or not, the engine should be capable of reduced idle to the point the engine will quit, though in reality 1,000rpm is a more realistic setting with this cam and even then, it'll be pretty lopey, even in a 1275. Not a displeasing sound though, IMHO!! :) Spraying carb cleaner (be careful) in and around the induction system should tell the tale in this respect...the idle will immediately change if and... VP3 cam...oh, yeah!!! Martyn, this is about as hot as you can get for the road in a 1275 and still have decent low end for light to medium traffic. In your smaller 1098, it's almost a mild race cam! Hopefully, you have the larger main bearing "cc" engine because this cam's torque curve comes in at about 3200 on a 1275cc+ motor and will pull right through 7,000rpm with larger valves and 1.5 rollers. On my 1340, it would idle very nicely at about 1,000rpm (nice "lopey" sound) and behaved very well using a 45DCOE with a Weber... MORE

After suffering the indignity of being pelted by acorns by red squirrels and freak summer rains I bought a "porta garage" now on sale at Harbor Freight for a hundred off. now $149.00. It is a white metal frame affair covered on all sides with silver tarp material and a zip entrance on one end. 8'10" wide by 16' 9" long . . . just right for a Spridget and a few feet around it. Now I have head protection and a dry place to work when it rains. I forgot to say the height . . . it... MORE

Bob Which is precisely the reason I'm painting my car myself. I think you've knocked the nail on the head, you CAN GET superb results using professional sprayers, but at a cost, and that cost is significant as you have pointed out. Long gone are the days you could get a decent respray for under 1k USD. This is partly because many of the 'pro's' will not guarantee a respray unless they do the prep and primer work, and of course as we all know, that part of the respray takes a considerable amount of time. The pro's over... MORE

G'day Cap'n I think it's RON. There is only one octane measurement over here, down under. And yes, it's unleaded. With one of those in-line zinc fuel catalyst thingies to protect the valve seats. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 26237... MORE

G'day Alan et al Can't help with the combustion chamber volume. The kerosine keeps running out those large holes where valves should be! The combustion volume depends on (amongst other things) how "proud" the valves sit off the seats. And since the head has no valves, and I have no new valves to try in it, and since I don't feel like buying two new valves - I can't answer your question! But I do know I have machined over .100" off head faces before exposing the oil feed line. With the higher comp pistons available, it's unlikely you... MORE

Colin, Alan, etal, The combustion chamber on the 295 head should be 28.3cc according to the 'factory' specs. I tried cc'ing my 12G295 head and got 28 + cc's. The syringe I used was only gradulated in cc's so what the + factor was I'm not sure. It took more than 28 cc's and less than 29cc's. That measurement plus the deck height measurement you provided told me the one I have hasn't been shaved/machined/milled. G'day Biff et al Just for you guys without a burette (or is that pipette, never could remember). I happen to have a brand new 12G295 head, still in the BMC wax paper. So I measured it for you. It is exactly 2.754" thick. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 26213... MORE

Have you examined the surface of the head? When I had my head milled the machine shop stamped 080 on the milled surface. It wasn't deep so it doesn't show up unless you look for it. Otherwise I have no suggestions for you. Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 26197... MORE

Thanks for the replies. While I was out in the garage the idea of cc'ing the head came to me. Had to reinstall the valves in one chamber and used a left over piece of 1/4" plexi from my windbreaker and cc'ed that chamber. I had a big needle that came with cc markings (came in a do-it-yourself printer ink replacement kit). The head has not been skimmed! I've removed the valves and it is ready for the head shop. Biff... The combusion chambers came stock with a certain cc capacity from the factory. This then, is the important number in terms of what is used for figuring compression ratio along with other factors of course. All, Recently I acquired a 12G295 head that I want to refurbish, Vizardise, and install on my 948. One pleasant surprise was that it has rimflow valves installed and they are clean and the guides are tight! Anyway, my question: How can I tell if the head has or has not been shaved/milled? I'm might be making an 'assumption' that since it has already been upgrade with the rimflow valves that it might have been already shaved/milled. But I don't know what it was installed on before my purchase. If it was on a 1100cc it might not have... MORE
