Jason... Sounds like the problem is on the "other side" (electrical) of the engine, assuming compression and leak down figures do not indicate mechanical problems. When was the last time you replaced wires, dist. cap, plugs, points, condenser and/or coil? Actually, best to do a major tune-up in which case you'll most likely come across and/or solve the problem, in any event? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24756... MORE

Kevin, 1500 run pretty clean ususally. I got a '75 to pass in California without a working (gutted( air pump and blocked air injection lines. I would think the EGR valve is essential though. Make sure the carb is properly tuned at that you choke is complete off with the car warmed up. I would run the carb as lean as possible and do a fresh oil change before having it tested. I don;t have a lot of experience with SMOG cars, so maybe someone else has somethig to ad. Gerard "gerardchateau" 24721... MORE

Hello all, I just tried to get my 77 though emissions and came up short. It passed the Carbon Monoxide & Hydrocarbon portion with flying colors but was just over the limits for Nitrus Oxides. My car is missing the EGR system & I know that would help. Short of replacing the missing valve, etc. are there any "tweaks" to the carburation/timing that could help it pass? Thanks! I think ther may be some confusion about the oversized valves. If the guides are worn you can install a valve that has a larger diameter shaft. If you want more flow you have to rework the head and install valves with larger diameter valve area[the big round top part].Hope this helps "stanley hill" 24715... Dave.... I ass-u-me oversize seats for oversize valves but, I do NOT "know" Datsun engines....so best to check with machinist for "right" answer. :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24672... MORE

Dave.... Same principle as A series or any other head. Larger intake valves improve breathing in terms of "mass flow" at the expense of "velocity" in terms of low end torque. Like everything else, it's a compromise situation, as in upgrading cam. You give up a little at the bottom or a little more in the middle and top. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24667... MORE

Jeeze! What a day, eh?! :( First you lose the water you need, than you get a load of it in the wrong places.... this does bite the big one. It's a matter of wait and see, Brad. The damage (if any) often does not show up immediately, but downline a couple of thousand miles or so. You can get a head start on this though, by taking a compression and leak-down ASAP and noting the figures...save 'em. Take another "set" a thousand miles or so down the road and compare. If they are basically the same, you most... MORE

Brad, A couple things. Hopefully you have dodged a bullet. I have heard stories of A-series engine overheated to the point of seizing up but running again once cooled down. I'm not saying that no damage occurs, but while not good, not necessarily fatal either. I would keep an eye on your oil because symptoms could be delayed. A weakened head gasket or crack around a valve could develop problems later. Other things I've seen as evidence of overheating are damage to pistons and rings from the swelling. Pistons will show significant scuffing on the skirts where they hit... MORE

Thanks for the info Gerard, and here's what I did... I measured the "at rest" distance between the mounts to be 12", but I didn't know at the time to note the tie-rod angle. I picked up the front end of the car, upper arm dropped against the rubber stop, and measured 13.5". Set the car back down gave a tape measure to my daughter and asked her to measure how much the car was moving up and down as I stood on the two front frame extensions jumping up and down myself. Don't laugh=85 it worked. My results... MORE

Thanks for the info! A quick question: You described how the EGR valve hooks up to the air intake manifold. How does it connect to the exhaust? Thanks again, Kevin "kari_kevin" 24482... MORE

Good Question, but before any one of the many experts can respond you both must agree on what is your objective. Get running and enjoy. Rebuild, show and drive. Other. Why was the engine pulled? Did the car run or was their a problem? While the engine is out, and I assume the Trans.; Take and inventory to see what is there and what's not. Inspect the Trans. gears and see if all turns O.K. Inspect the braking system. Remove the interior stuff including the seats to inspect cockpit. From there it depends on what you two decide you... MORE

Hello all, I'm looking for information on how the emissions controls are configured on a 77. Specifically how the Air pump & EGR valve are setup. Right now on mine the air pump feeds though a check valve directly to a connector on the tail end of the exhaust manifold. Did that year have a diverter or gulp valve? The EGR valve is missing. Did it have one? How was it hooked up? There is an elbow connector on the air intake manifold that isn't hooked up to anything. I've been looking at pictures of engines on the web,... MORE

Hi Don, This could be the clutch, but I don't think so. If it were, you have some trouble, even if only occasionally, with second or one of the synchro gears as well. What you describe is probably caused by you first motion shaft continuing to spin even when the clutch is disengaged. With no synchro, there is nothing to slow the spinning non-synchro gear. My interpretation is that the first motion shaft is kept spinning by the pilot bushing or bearing. Could be a burred up bearing/bush (some 1275's has a phosphor bronze bushing, some had a needle... George, I have not followed this entire thread, but see you original message included. If my suggestion has already been mentioned, then never mind. The besta way to sort out the source of the problem is a leak-down test. This requires compressed are and a special set of gauges that will compare the pressure in with the pressure out. A difference of 10 percent or more indicates a problem. It will also tell you the source of the leak by listening to where the air is escaping, (valves rings, head gasket, etc.) One thing that sometimes causes your symptoms,... MORE
