Robert and others, When you mentioned a rear clip, I was reminded that I have a rear clip in the back yard from a Karman Ghia that looks quite good. I would love to give it away, I have been thinking about just cutting it up a little each week and putting the chunks in the trash but I hate to see it go to waste. Any interest? I wanted to get everyone to pray for my son. Today, Sunday, I got a call from the Army that my son had been shot in the head. I am asking for all your prayers. Chuck...do not be mislead by compression ratios which could be had back when leaded ("manly") octanes were available . Today's unleaded "garbage" octanes require a little more thought in this di rection, assuming a cast iron head and the ignition advance curve you're probably working with, along with a "mild" cam with relatively little duration which will favor maximum "trapping" of the combustion gases in favor of the low end of the useable rpm spectrum (torque.. as in street application). With aluminum heads you can go about a point higher than with cast iron, all else being equal. Also,... MORE
Actually, Chuck.... .milling the head is preferred over flat-tops or domed pistons (as explained in your Vizard book, BTW) as a way of bringi ng the CR up a bit. With all due respect....strongly suggest you read the book...from cover to cover..... BEFORE (not after) you build your motor!!!! :):) Fr'instance....an understanding of the sections on cams will allow YOU to choose the best cam for your application, without input from others (though of course we are always at your disposal, obviously!!:). Hi all,I am building a 59 bugeye with a datsun 5 speed and parts from a 72 midget.The 1275 is a smog head 72 motor and I was just wondering if anybody knows a mild street way to build this motor.I would like a mild street cam ,am planing on a header and punching the block 20 over.I have the vizards book but its a lot to digest.He says MG metro pistons work fine but thats only 8.8 to 1 cr.I think I would like to have about 10 to 1 C.R..I don't think My motor has ever been... Duncan, You are right - I didn't think of that! Since the valves appear to open at the right moment (1 or 2 deg off?) the chain should be OK. Then the question may be whether the pulley can somehow be rotated 15 deg? I have never taken it off, but looking into Haynes and Ball it looks like there is only one way to mount it? Anyone knows? Hello all: This Question is about my '68 Sprite "Rosa" - 1275cc Is it possible that the timing chain jumps a teeth on any of the sprockets when it gets worn? I have my engine out of the car for an unrelated issue (replaced the starter ring gear =96 different story) and noticed that the notch in the crankshaft pulley is about 15 deg past the TDC mark when the nr. 1 piston is at TDC. I checked the posiiton of the nr. 1 piston visualy through the spark hole, and by using a wire and am quite sure... MORE
Stephan, The timing chain would not have any issue here as you are reading the crankshaft not the camshaft. If it had jumped then the valves would be out but your TDC would still be correct on the piston. Sorry I can't help more but that all I can think of now. I finally tried fitting the 12" mini wheel. As you said fine on the rear, but no good on the front it did foul the ball joint and the studs aren't long enough to fit the wheel back to front. Nology Hotwires.... exactly, Spencer...without 3rd party empirical data, I don't tend to "believe" either. if Vizard hadn't tested them, I wouldn't have spent the bucks....they're not inexpensive. But they do last a long, long time. They are very well built and I can tell you from experience they will burn off oil on spark plug tips, even in engines burning a quart every in <500 miles. You'll still get crusty brown carbon deposits that will eventually fill the gap and "short", but you won't be getting wet oil fouling at all, assuming compression is reasonably decent. Hi Guys, I decided that I do not plan on using my Hardtop for my 73 midget. It need to be cleaned since it sat in a desert for 17 years, the rear plastic window is pretty shot, and the rubber is ugly, but there are no cracks, etc. I have it in storage now, and I would love to have it go for a good cause. Mitch..IMHO.... if you are going to use the Judson, I would call APT and source the best quality valve they have to offer. Otherwise, unless you've got a hairy cam in there or are running 10.0-1 or a higher static compression ratio, standard quality/design should be fine normally aspirated. About oversized exhaust valves....many moons ago when the first 1275 Cooper S types came out, they went with a larger 1.4 intake valve and subsequently, went to a larger than stock exh.valve to "match", feeling this would give more powe r. I am going to assume based upon the information you gave them on compression ratio, they assume you know enough to use the highest legal (unleaded) octane commercially available and in Europe, this is 98RON as far as I know. Thanks Brad I have removed the covers and extracted the tappets and found two of them worn/pitted. The objective of the dismantling is to try and find a rattling noise that occurs on acceleration and deceleration - this is the first time I have taken an engine apart so it is a voyage of discovery....so you can expect more requests for help in the near future to appear on the web site! Hi Lee, If you found a couple of them pitted, then in all likelyhood, the camshaft is damaged. BTW, typically when you are removing tappets and there is no damage to them they sould go back into the same holes they came out of. No mix 'em up here!!. A rattle on acceleration and a rattle on deceleration, doesn't sound like a tappet noise. Tappets are under the same load, accelerating, decelerating, coasting, at idle, etc. That noise doesn't change much. Sounds like bearing problems. Mains and rods are suspect here. Hi Lee, Tappet covers are located on the side of the block, underneath the manifolds. Single bolt holds them in place. Tappets can be removed without removing the cam on 948 anfd 1098 engines.
