were the new guides pressed in and reamed to size correctly? Are they the ones for unleaded (bronze?) or steel? Were the valve stems worn or were they new, too? David "David Jacobs" 32071... MORE
You have worn valve guide on the inlets. You can replace the seals on the valve stems, but it will only make a marginal difference. The problem is that when the throttle is shut there is a vacuum in the inlet port area, created by the piston going down and nothing to go in. The inlet valves are open, but not the carb's butterflies. Hence vacuum. This pulls oil from the rocker area thru the valve guides and most of it burns on the back of the inlet valves. Once you're underway this diminishes and you are ok. Don't... MORE
No, that is normal. In SC/CR box, the only comfortable gear is 4th! Get some hawk disc brake pads from the usual suspects (winners circle, mini mania etc) Mike "Mike Gigante" 32046... MORE
Tapered rollers, AFAIK. I suspect the modern diff in a FWD car is lighter to turn than a Spridget rear axle diff. Guy "Guy Weller" 31996... MORE
Hi Guy, I suspect that you have some calipers that are ready for a rebuild. These pistons don't retract as the new cars do, but merely relax. If the dust seals are stiff and totally dried out it will inhibit the relaxing of the pads from the rotors. I rebuild a lot of these calipers and sometimes it's almost impossible to get out the pistons because there's 40 years of crud and dried up rubber involved. Another possibility on the calipers is the m/cyl is holding too much pressure on the system with it's internal residual valve. A suggestion... MORE
Damien, Unless you are planning on replacing the needle roller bearings in the Hardy Spicer joints, I would not attempt too dismantle them as it will be virtually impossible to do so without damaging the bearing caps or grease seals. Clean the UJs in situ, taking care not to de-grease the bearings, and then paint the tubular part of the propshaft only. Guy "Guy Weller" 31950... MORE
Some of you may remember a mail i wrote a few days agoo were i told you my float bowls went almost empty. Well i think i have found the cause of this problem as well. I changed the petrol line from the tank yesterday and when removing the old one that had a joint before the pump (mechanical) with a short piece of rubber tubing the hose clip on one end was loose and the actual rubber tubing was loose as well. I could just pull it off by hand easily. I recon the pump must have sucked... MORE
?I figured I would seek the advice of those who have been there and Never seen a single DCOE setupon any 4 cylider engine with 4 inlet ports in the head!. The A_sereis normally has only one DCOE dues to a restriction in the head design that means that each pair of cylinders shares and inlet port, the only two intel ports, and thus no real point in using two DCOE carbs. The 1500 engine does not suffer this limitaion. Triumph tume and lawerence tune in the UK will sell you a twin DCOE mainfold for this engine. However... MORE

Sounds like either a) more suction on the front carb - in which case you need to balance the carbs, adjusting the throttle stop screws of each whilst litening to the induction hiss from each one in turn - or using one of the many crb ballancer kits available or b) You have not got the jets adjusted to the same point on both carbs, allowing the front one to pull more fuel through. The start point is both jets flush with the bridge ( see "cryptic manual" thread ), and then lower both jets by the same amount... MORE
Does anyone know of a better valve cover gasket available than the tradional cork ones? I've heard of reusable silicon ones available for Triumphs. Curt "cfisher1a" 31923... MORE
My reasoning for going with a DCOE is for the following: 1. It was originally fed by a Zenith Stromberg carb for the 1500 midgets. I'm doing a complete restoration on the car, however, between the engine that came with the car (with a thrown rod) and the one I purchased to rebuild, neither came with a carburetor or a distributor. 2. I want to get rid of the zenith stromberg =) The engine is a basic 1500 engine. Stock cam in it, 9:1 compression and .020" overbore from the rebuild. Currently no head porting or anything done to... Hi Nelson, I have some AC rebuild kits for the mechanical pump. NOS, but who knows how fresh and good they are. Contact me off list if you're interested Another way of going and this is something my Morris friends do but for another reason. The Morris pump is mounted on the firewall in full view of anyone wanting to see it. Some want to have a pristine, all original looking engine bay, but prefer some reliability. So they mount an electronic Facet/Purolator fuel pump near the fuel tank and leave the old pump in the engine compartment with... MORE

I was fortunate to have a pleasant weekend, with a variety of list members, as well as looking for some old car parts. Wednesday had me preparing the Impala, and display driver, for the trip to be sold. Thursday, I headed up to north Fort Worth, to meet up with Bruce Lowry, and his friend Shane. I met up with them a bit later than expected, as rain had slowed Bruce down to a crawl through Dallas. I parked the Impala next to their spaces, and installed my dummy driver, Gene Simmons. I had found a mask of him... MORE
Hi, Curt... Pure race Huffaker carbs are modified to be "fixed" rather than "variable" venturi...IOW, the air valves are held fully open and machined to form the top of the venturi (or "fixed choke"..which is not to be confused with "choking" for mixture enrichment when cold). So, the butterfly works but not the air valve. Thus, to start "cold", you need to cut off part of the air supply to artificially enrichen the mixture. The fellow lister who mentioned the "duct tape" is "the man"!! Huffaker's pure race engine is usually fitted with "crankfire" ignition. Whether the advance is... MORE
I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running. I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era. Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1 at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. No choke, just ram air intakes modifed hs2 carbs. Had it to a local brit car guru last fall and he tuned the carbs and set it up... MORE
Hi Ryan The heat shields are available new, I've just bought one for my car from my local MG spares supplier, Beech Hill garage! It's a pain to fit though, a real juggling act with the carbs.....why oh why are the carbs held on with nuts and bolts rather than having studs like an A series! Also it could be the petrol ageing the diaphragm, make you sure you buy top quality ones from a good supplier like Moss. I had three fuel Pumps go on my Beetle (bloody thing!) in 18 months due to this. James "James" 31721... MORE
Hi, Im looking at putting twin 40s on the midget, but im not overly familiar with webers or dellortos personally so was wondering what the pros / cons of each were. Theyre not going onto a stock engine btw, thats in the process of having its components lightened and balanced, the stock cam is going and the head is polished ported with larger inlet valves. Twin 40's seemed like a reasonable choice all things considered. Thanks, Neil 75 1500. "Neil Rouse" 31716... MORE
RE: I think you've hit the nail on the head. I guess there will always be this problem as long as we make school administration more lucrative than classroom teaching. I remember it being another way long, long ago. I think conscientious people, whether in teaching or business, touch other peoples lives in a positive fashion. Cops, firemen, businessmen, pilots, programmers and I have even heard of lawyers that do good.:-) For good people it's not about the money, in any walk of life or profession. All in all teaching has been good to me. I only complain occasionally... MORE
Chris... You hit the nail on the head..."over lawyered". We've become much too thin skinned and way over-sensitive to EVERY LITTLE issue. It's like we've lost our way in terms of "priorities" with respect to the general welfare of the majority. We've done this internationally as well. We're so overly concerned with being liked by everybody (impossible on the face of it, obviously!:) to the extent were so busy trying to be all things to all people that we've "lost" ourselves. Which, come to think of it, is a prime reason why girls who play a subservient role to... MORE
I guess what I will do, until I can find a goo dused one, is to just bypass the valve. I will plug the hose going from the valve to the heater, and use s fitting to connect to hose from the engine to the carburator thermostat(?). That way the system shoudl work just as if the heater valve was closed. I think... "Michael" 31581... MORE

The valve I have used is:- ADU9102 Heater valve was 88G601 And yes I did mean an MGB rotary control with cable. But I did start off with a straight push/pull cable originally which is simpler to install. This along with a suitable control cable is available from MiniMania, see link below. I don't know if their price is the best available. Geri. http://www.minimania.com/web/CatPage/5-11/Chapter/5/Page/11/MiniCooperCatalo g.cfm "G & J Swann-Price" 31556... MORE
A common mod is to replace the locally operated valve (ie one with the hand wheel attached on top) with a remotely operated one which are much more commonly available. The advantage of this is that you can then buy a control cable (either a heater control from say an early mini or a choke control for a Spridget - I've used a rotary control from a B in my car) mount it in a suitable place in the car and you then can control the heat without having to get out and lift the bonnet (hood).
