Paul.... "Thin flange" refers to the thickness of the actual wall of the block, this thickness being most apparent in the block's lower "flange" which borders the oil sump. As far as I know, the company went to thicker wall ("thick flange") 1275's by '68. For stock bores, the thin-flange was not a weak engine. I tested a Judson blower on a stock bore thin-flange '67 for many, many runs at 4-6psi to 6,000rpm and while we did not retain the blower, there wa s no apparent engine damage as the motor continued to run just fine for man... Andy.... Brad says you've got a '67 and he oughta know. The '67 had the "early" thin-flange 1275. And most likely it is the standar d high compression (this would be the "H" in the engine #) 8.8-1 motor. The "good stuff"!! This motor was most likely equipped with the #40819 Cooper "S" spec. Lucas 23D mechanical advance only distributor and even better, most likely the rare a nd much sought after EN40 (bulletproof) steel crankshaft. Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 37613... MORE

I bed to differ, the flywheen on the 948 is IIRC much deeper, and it hits the back of the bell housing with the ribcase gearbox or it did when I tried to do it (I eneded up taking the flywheel and back plate off the blown 1098) The 948 that was in my frogeye (which also has a ribcase geabox) that I repeleced with a 1275 also had a 1098 flywheel As for the later gearboxes allgedely superior blauk ring syncro, wears out just as quickly. There are only two reasons to fit the ribcase, you are fitting... MORE

G'day Mike You have a discontinuity somewhere in the power supply, which will cause the gauge to read full. Read this: http://www.spriteparts.com.au/fuelguage.htm avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 37519... MORE
G'day guys Cooler air is denser, denser air picks up more fuel and carries it intot he combustion chamber, and you get a bigger bang. So a little more power. Something you would notice at speed not on a dyno. Correctly positioned, the intake will also provide a ram air effect - a mini blower. Note: more of each, fuel and air, so it's still at the correct fuel/air ratio, not "more fuel" as in running richer. I do like your idea Robert, a little lateral thinking going on there. If you set it up correctly you might actually... MORE
"Take it from the grille area...." Exactly as I've set mine up, through a 4" tube which feeds incoming air into the carb area at speed. Would do better with a cold air "box" obviously!! :) Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 37521... MORE
The obvious answer is a before and after test with a dyno/rolling road, but there are pitfalls here for the unwary - your car will be stationary rather than moving through the air, though a blower is usually directed at the radiator/engine bay. The bonnet will also be open rather than closed, so airflow into your cold air intake might not be the same. These changes in operating conditions can all affect the HP, though if you endeavour to keep the same conditions, you might pick up a difference due to the new intake. On the other hand, if... MORE
There was some discussion about insulating exhaust manifolds (headers, extractors, etc) and about keeping heat from the carbs. I wondered about that, did a little reading, and a little PV=nRT stuff, and it looks like a cool air supply to the carbs might add a few HP. Maybe. Anyway, not being one to spend money extravagantly (the wife doesn't agree BTW), I put together a $10 cool air intake. It's easier to see than explain, so take a peek at the cool air photos. Now, the question is - if it adds, say 3 or 4 HP, how on... MORE
They come to town every year and fly out of Boeing Field, just up the road from my office. While they don't practice in the vacinity of my building, they do fly over it - sometimes at rather high rates of speed. Soooo very cool! "Jim" 37485... MORE
G'day all Let's start with a definition. Those non-standard tubular pipes that bolt onto your cylinder head to let the exhaust gas out, and eventually join into one "collector" for the exhaust pipe, are called "extractors" or in some languages "headers". "Exhaust" includes these plus everything down the line, past the muffler to the chrome tip on the tail pipe. I guess we are talking here about insulating the extractors, not the entire exhaust system. We run in all our engines on a calibrated engine dyno. It lives in a 10ft x 15ft brick room with a huge fan... MORE
I am looking at a 71 midget to purchase. When I drove it 1st gear seemed much noisier than the other 3 gears. Just a typical "gear" noise. It also tended to pop out of 1st gear if left in "too long". Is this normal or a sign of a failing 1st gear. Thanks Mark "markpicu" 37464... MORE
How much more power do you want than you can get from a well tuned 5 port head? Or is it as much for appearance's sake? David PS welcome to the group! "David Jacobs" 37442... MORE
My friend's 73 Midget was outfitted with stainless steel brake and clutch lines during his rebuild. (FInally nearing completion after 2 decades plus). Finally got the car on the ground again two weeks ago and were all hyped to see it move under it's own power for the first time in ages. NO GO. Stainless steel clutch line had a leak. I'm not nearly as sold on them as I was as this line was relatively new and completely unstressed. I have heard insulating the exhaust manifold can improve performance significantly. Both from keeping the exhaust hotter for longer and keeping the incoming air cooler. Have many other people done it? I have a unmodified (apart from an oil cooler) 1500cc Midget, would it improve my Horse power and or MPG? I ask cause I have been reading the Vizzard book and it does not seem to mention any benefitt from keeping the exhaust hotter. "gav_newman" 37423... MORE
New to the Yahoo group, hello and thanks in advance... Has anyone out there had experience with 7 or 8 port cylinder heads? Vizard's guide has a whole 3 paragraphs on the subject, Stapleton has one! I came across an old issue of Retro Cars (May '04) that reviewed A series engine tuning and and turned me onto this option. I've gone to Mini-Spares UK website and priced the unit ($$$- but cheaper than the K-series engine swap, which would be way too hard to do living Stateside). I've viewed Bill Richards Racing website and read about how he... MORE
The steel brake lines at Advance come in various straight lengths, so you'll want to buy the appropriate lengths and then bend them. They are easy to bend by hand. I don't know what sort of shape your present lines are in, but if they're not leaking or damaged, or aren't corroded, you may not want to replace them all. On the other hand, new ones are not very expensive, so it might be good insurance to do them all and eliminate any worry on that score. I believe Advance will also have new hoses, caliper kits, brake pads,... MORE
I think you'll find them in stock at Advance Auto Parts - if memory serves, they're the ones with the red color-coded fittings, but take an old one along to be sure. "joe blxfstz" 37414... MORE
Will the perception of safeness added by a roll bar, regardless of how you feel it looks, make you a more reckless operator? Let's talk about perception for a moment. I was pulled over on Friday by a Washington State Patrolman who contended I made an unsafe pass while on my motorcycle. He was traveling opposite of me, behind another car. I was in a legal passing zone and had more than sufficient room to pass. He accomplished a U-turn and I simply pulled to the side of the road. I removed my helmet and stepped toward his car... MORE
I've been meaning to post this FWIW, but have forgotten for a few months. My Sprite began a random misfire. Checked all the usual culprits, but couldn't find the problem. I didn't suspect the spark plugs because they were only a few thousand miles old, and they looked perfect - light brown insulators, no visible cracks or tracking. Since nothing else worked, I decided to try new plugs. Advance Auto Parts had Bosch Platinum for $1.79 ea, so I put in a set. Problem solved. "joe blxfstz" 37364... MORE

Stewart, What size tyres do you have? This will obviously affect the revs per mile, but never fear cos http://www.f-body.org/gears/ has a handy mph/revs calculator. Since I have/Drive one of those un-civilised frogeye's, W/5 speed, I will take a stab at two of your questions, the RPM shouldn't be one of them because yesterday I was doing 70 at about 3500 RPM's. Your Oil Pressure sounds ok for a used engine. If during the 16 years it was down, you rebuilt it..... Not good. You might want to check the crankshaft bearings for excessive wear or the crank being oval. My 1275 runs 60-70 at 2-5,000 RPM, 50-60 psi at idle, but mine was rebuilt 1700 miles ago, not just the engine, the whole... MORE
