it's worth giving it a go with a hot power washer - this should go some way towards getting the worst of it off. Do they have the coin-in-the-slot ones at petrol/gas stations over there? David "David Jacobs" 26890... MORE
Exactly, Alan... "They" can see "you" better....not just a matter of you seeing better..absolutely. I have no idea as to equal power providing better lighting with halogen but wouldn't surprise me a bit...better "medium" I'll betcha. Once I tried Halogens, I never gave "going back" a thought. "Blue/white" bulbs make any difference as far as better lighing goes?? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26854... MORE
This is true, however you cannot always get a halogen bulb the same rating as the old one, in this case you usually have to up in power. Terry "terry.isherwood" 26841... MORE
Cap'n Not sure I'd fit Halogens to a dynamo car, they draw too much power. Just my 10 cents . . . Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26834... MORE
Also, the use of a "relay" will take the heavier load of halogens off the switch itself. Relay is a good idea , I thought they were fitted as standard. Specially for high beam. I also thought by using Halogen gas (or Quartz iodine ) you got a brighter light for the same amount of electrical power needed for the old bulbs . I stand to be corrected of course. - Having just replaced ONLY the bulbs in my daily car with 'bluer brighter bulbs' with no ill effects , except a lighter wallet. Just that I can see... MORE
Thanks Nigel, Yes, sentimentality does enter into it. My father gave me this Sprite as a high school graduation present some 23 years ago. He actually gave it to me in pieces, and we rebuilt it together, which brought us closer, considering I was living with my mother after their divorce. So it's not just a car, it's a family heirloom! In the last three years I have installed performance suspension front and rear, uprated brakes, Weber, and LCB exhaust header. Now the drivetrain is out to rebuild the engine and install the Datsun 5- speed. Looking more closely... MORE
I filled the clutch fluid to the full level and just went out to drive her. I haven't driven her in probably a month. Now, there's almost no play in the pedal coming up off the floor before the gear engages and once when I stopped and had the clutch in I felt the engine bog down and it ground going into first. I eventually was able to gently work it in. It's also making an odd noise that I don't think I can describe but know it's not normal for this car. The oil on the dipstick registers... MORE
I took a 800 mile ride this weekend, to take my Bugeye to Rivergate shop, after much number crunching, it came out that if I had them build an engine for me, and rebuild a 5 speed, the shipping on that would eat me alive, so in my thought I asked what it would be if I brought my car to them to have the work done, of course I know it will take another trip down there, to pick up car, but... the shipping would have been more expensive than the labor they charged to install, so that's... Hi, First off hello to all. I am a new spridget owner and enjoy reading all the posts. I was wondering what the "normal" exhaust noise level for a 1967 1275 should be. I am quite new to this car and think it needs a new muffler but not sure. I know they had a raspy sound but this sounds too extreme. Any points welcome. Thanks Duncan "duncan846" 26689... MORE
Brandon Not sure if this will help answer your question, but it will put things into perspective for you. The change over point for RHD cars from positive to negative earth was at HAN9-72041 and GAN4-60460, November 1967. This involved a change of rev counter, wiper motor, fuel guage with voltage stabiliser. The Temperature gauge changed to C-N-H graduation. Now I'm not sure when the change-over came for LHD cars, but it must have been around the same time. So it looks like from your VIN number it was originally a Negative Earth car. The only real way of... MORE
Wow...tough one to call over an email set-up, Duncan. These cars came with a single baffled muffler. The afermarket or special tuning sports versions of these were of straight through design and either steel or glasspacked..... Cherry Bomb or Thrush make excellent glasspack mufflers for these cars 'cause they come in small, compact sizes and are easily fitted. Don't forget Duncan, noise standards were a thing of the future "back then". A Sprite's normal sound back when would be considered very loud by today's standards. It should be "raspy" but not so loud that it becomes really bothersome on... MORE

Nigel, et al Nut splitters do work , if you don't buy cheap ones , low cost is good - ch eap is not. Same with all tools really. When replacing track rod ends etc there's nothing wrong with using a small amount of anti seize grease or LM (Low Melting temp.) (I like LM10 )I also use WD40 if the thread is trapped at each end and is virtually air tight so the WD40 doesn't evaporate. It's the mechanical stretching of the threads that lock parts together. An excellent article by a BMW owner association member ( the... MORE
Ed Not quite ready to call it the crank, but almost. The whole thing turned way too easy before I took it apart. I think I'll run a quick check and if I get it as straight I'll send the crank to the shop and have them take a look for a second opinion. Just an FYI, 1500 page for torque values on your site doesn't work. Thanks for the advice. Steve Quandt Steve Quandt 26606... MORE
Cap'n Bob, My you do go on. I can't process all of what you sent but I will speak to part of it. As the father of two boys (21 and 15)I know (first hand empirical) that the parents of children within 5-10 years of mine either way are the worst in a long time. This is my generation and they, as a group, suck! The catalog of selfishiness, over-indulgence in all areas, horrific judgement and evasion of adult responsibilities of all kinds is truly mind-blowing. All the silliness of the 60's and 70's was pounded into the wits... MORE
LOL...:):) Margaret... I am not talking about the unawareness of childhood which allows a relatively carefree existence my good lady. I am talking about a mature adult with a keen sense of situational awareness who works with the positive while being totally knowledgeable with respect to the negative, yet has lived a carefree existence (as an adult) for the last 30 years!! :) It is not a matter of getting anything off my chest. You asked an intelligent question...you got an intelligent answer though you may not like what you hear! :) It is part of the reality that... MORE
Well, I took the carbs off and found that when the machine shop had bored the bodies for oversize shafts they did a very poor job. The center of the bore was shift a few thou up which caused the butterfly not to seal on the bottom. That job was done many years ago. Fortunately I have a another set of carbs that I can use. The engine no can be made to idle just about where I want it although with the cam (VP3 in a 1098) it doesn't like low idle speeds, greater than 900 is good.... MORE
"you change the endearing handling by a ton..." per Ed! :) This is true. The suspension was built with a certain sized tire contact patch in mind. When you change only the contact patch (larger, most especially "wider") you can expect more stability/grip but less "tossability", all else remaining equal or the same. One of the reasons for this is the slight change toward neg. camber which comes with the slightly wider track, most especially when teamed with a wider wheel. Now you can keep the "tossability" but move it up in the speed range with the right combo... MORE
the reduction in unsprung weight, or more correctly, the *ratio* of unsprung to sprung weight, has more of an effect on how the suspension works (as the springs and shock abosorbers work more efficiently) than outright straight line performance so it's rather more "less" than "more" ;-) Regards David "David Jacobs" 26469... All, I searched the archive but could not find a post and my local trans shop was no help. I just put a 5 speed datsun trans into my bugeye and am trying to locate info as to what oil to use and how much. Just guessing I'd say 30w std motor oil and about a quart. But more accurate information is always helpful. Thanks ken horner "pblock4x4" 26454... MORE
Gil, sounds like you have the same mixed emotions I do. I love the way the wires look, but I'm not sure of the maintenance issues either. I DO know that I won't be trying to tune them myself. As far as cost goes, the knock off minilites look pretty cool too. Maybe someone on the list that supplies parts (ED) or has access to these wheels (ED) or something (ED) could post a price comparison of the wires and minilites (ED) or rather minilite replicas. ????(ED)????? Well Bob.... While you don't NEED a wider wheel than 4.5, you will get more out of the upgrade to 70 series in terms of handling (all else being equal) with as much of the tire "under" the rim, rather than having the tire "beyond" the rim. And I would think, that Minilite knockoffs (or "wannabes) would require a helluva lot less maintanence than wire wheels? They would also probably be lighter(?) which will decrease unsprung weight, the effect of which would be like going with a lightened flywheel in terms of performance (more or less:). Cap'n. Chris... Interesting question however, did you know that a wider .015, instead of .012 clearance is recommended by the factory for the stock cam when used in "performance" circumstances? I guess the .012 is used for more quiet running under normal or low rpm street applications when top rpm useage will be brief, rather than under cirumstances wherein continuous high rpm running and attendant swelling of parts due to heat is expected. Also, under the latter circumstances, "burning" of a valve will be less likely as well. And, of course, with the wider cleanance, you get faster acceleration ("ramp"... MORE
