Colin states (in part), "We run 9.5-10.5 to 1.....on 98 octane fuels.." Ass-u-me "unleaded" or "low-lead", Colin but... is this "RON" or "PON" as to octane value? Methinks "RON". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26223... MORE

Nigel, Couldn't agree more. Concours isn't worth the effort. Like you, I bought my car to drive. I've loved LBC's since I was a kid. I actually bought and drove a '69 Triumph GT6+ when I was 19 and have been hooked ever since. Had to sell it after 9 months for the college fund but I sure wish I had it today. Unlike you however, I always planned a non-original car. In my opinion, driveability is somewhat compromised by MG technology which is a polite way of dissing Lucas. My best improvement to the car was dumping the... MORE

Colin at sprite parts wrote I happen to have a brand new 12G295 head, still in the BMC wax paper. So I measured it for you. It is exactly 2.754" thick. So, That means it's just inside the drawing tolerance of 2.75" +/- 0.005" However,Colin The depth dimension of the combustion chamber - could you give us a dimension of this please. ,( which is more critical to find out out if the engine face has been machined) In fact any dimensions for a brand new head would be useful. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I include part of an email I sent... Thanks for the replies. While I was out in the garage the idea of cc'ing the head came to me. Had to reinstall the valves in one chamber and used a left over piece of 1/4" plexi from my windbreaker and cc'ed that chamber. I had a big needle that came with cc markings (came in a do-it-yourself printer ink replacement kit). The head has not been skimmed! I've removed the valves and it is ready for the head shop. Biff... The combusion chambers came stock with a certain cc capacity from the factory. This then, is the important number in terms of what is used for figuring compression ratio along with other factors of course. Eduardo, Aptfast or any of the other "usual suspects" would have the exact original factory "numbers", sir. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26198... MORE

All, Recently I acquired a 12G295 head that I want to refurbish, Vizardise, and install on my 948. One pleasant surprise was that it has rimflow valves installed and they are clean and the guides are tight! Anyway, my question: How can I tell if the head has or has not been shaved/milled? I'm might be making an 'assumption' that since it has already been upgrade with the rimflow valves that it might have been already shaved/milled. But I don't know what it was installed on before my purchase. If it was on a 1100cc it might not have... MORE

I have two questions mostly revolving around the same issue involving my 3.9 diff I'll be transplanting to my Bugeye project. Has anyone on the list rebuilt a differential and if so how was the crushable spacer handled as I don't see this as a part that can be ordered from the normal sources. Second question, If I just replace the diff pinion oil seal how is the torque to the pinion nut handled? It's torqued to 140 ft/lbs but doesn't that have the potential to further crush that spacer? Ok, I'm going to take advantage of the list... MORE

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had started a webpage that contains scanned-in out-of-print BMC, Lucas, and other manuals. Since then several folks have taken it upon themselves to email me scanned pages of booklets they own (including a couple of early Spridget special tuning manuals), and I have assembled them into .pdfs and added them to the page. Hi guys I'm about to paint my rear axle, which I'm assuming is gloss black like most of the other suspension components. The question is, is the differential carrier /cage also painted black or left in its natural silver alloy finish? Thanks in advance . . . Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26169... MORE

Reguarding the SU's on your 1275/1380, you can get the manifold from an MGB, cut the center and then run a pair of HS4's. :) Gives lots of power and fits under the Bugeye bonnet. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 26144... MORE

Hi Seem to be having trouble getting enough fuel from tank to engine. I get excellent fuel pressure from end of line (at the tank) to carb. Once it's hooked to tank I get drastic pressure drop. The car will idle and rev fine, even drive ok but when I punch it out it dies out. No fuel at carb. I have had tank off a couple times and it is clean. Air blows through pickup tube nice and strong. This is a '79 1500 Midget with the tank with vent tube that goes into emissions system. I have... MORE

Hmmm.... Had this sort of problem on initial acquisition of my BE with 1098. Turns out the fuel cap was of the "unvented" type...being used in an "open" system. This resulted in vacuum within the tank under extended "load"...went to a vented fuel cap...solved the problem. Your system is "vented" to a charcoal cannister by way of an expansion tank located in the right trunk "wall". I am not sure exactly how this works, having disabled all this stuff immediately upon acquisition of my PO'd '74 Midget, while going over to a vented fuel cap in it's case, among... MORE

Well....Big Bob.... I cannot source this engine number but... "ass-u-me" ing a high compression 948, the U standing for remote change gearbox "over here". A standard set of Spridget 1.25 SU's with AN needles and blue springs should work very well, I would think. Thing is, you would want this on the better flowing Cooper twin intake manifold if at all possible instead of the stock Spridget (worse flowing) type. And then, the carb mounting angle might be just different enough that use of the Cooper intake manifold might require a little fetteling under there to get proper clearance... MORE

Hello, I have a refinished 850 head for a mini, however, it came on the 1098 engine in my bugeye. Confused,... me too. Seems that when I bought the car I didnt check out the head casting number to make sure that it was in fact a 1098 head. Compression was good, Nor did I check out the casting number before I had the head resurfaced, put in ALL new 1098 valves, springs and guides. Now I have a new 1098 head( checked the casting number this time) but need to sell the modified 850 (compression when it was... MORE

Ed writes "I have a TON of "space" so Listetrs, check .." I apologise in advance for being pernickety , but surely, whilst we are being correct ....... a TON is a measure of weight (or force over an area) SO, Space should be measured in ACRES or if volume CUBIC YARDS, you choose. 8o) VBG Alan "alan.east-jones" 26100... Rather than use a centre punch and hammer, try a 'push punch' or automatic centre punch, with a large slightly curved dolly behind the panel. It can also work quite well it you use a lump of lead - or similar - behind the panel. When punched, use a small diameter drill at high speed to provide space for the web of the larger drill for the holes. This method has worked well for me on curved and shaped panels before. If you have a good automatic punch you can set the force. Try it out on a bit... MORE

A fellow lister, Steve is kindly sending me a template. I take your point and will try it on a bit of scrap first. Getting that drill to go in dead right is not easy. Did you use a small sharp drill first? A battery drill will allow slow speed to start with, that is what I will use first. Also I have some centre drills from a lathe so I will experiment with them and let you know. A centre punch will distort the sill and damage the paint. A straight edge will show if I managed to... Julien... Well, could be an old or weak fuel pump, lack of a heat shield between carbs and engine (it gets hot under there when not moving at speed) causing fuel to percolate or "vapour lock", or lack of a vented fuel cap (though the latter is usually a case of fuel starvation which shows up under load..as in climbing a long hill with the foot well down). So, number one, check for the heat shield (basically a metal plate upon which the throttle return springs are mounted in the stock set-up). If it's "there"....go to... ...number two; at... MORE

I recently aquired a 78 1500cc midget that has been sitting for 8 years. I have been there before, so I am familiar with what I need to do to get this thing running again (flush & recondition tank, replace hoses, etc..) but I do have a couple of questions. 1. The car had been converted to a Webber DGV carb. Is this a better carb than the stock zeniths? Does it provide better performance or should I change it back. 2. Other than victoria british, is there a different company I should be looking to for parts, a... MORE

I have power going into the dizzy, ignition switch off or on. Power to the coil when the points are closed. Still no spark, I guess it's time to replace the cap, rotor and wires. I replaced the coil this morning. I converted the car to an alternator and negative ground earlier. Is there anything there that might be causing the problem? BTW the coil was warm after checking for spark. This is really puzzling. Thanks. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 25899... MORE

G'day all This talk about badges reminded me - I also have the wrong boot badge for my Austin Sprite. The grill badge is fine, in fact I have a few spares, but the large (5 inch?) plastic Austin Sprite badge is no longer there. Yes, there's power to the coil. I do need to check the wire inside the dizzy. Everything is +15 years old, no it's sat that long so I would think things would be ok. I'll delve into it further this weekend. "Martyn Eastwood" 25851... MORE
