I replaced my own windshield....successfully. Tried to get someone local to do it, and none of the glass places would touch the job. With a little planning, it really is an "at home" job. My brother and I did it while watching the Browns lose (again). First, order all new screws....you'll need them. Have some sharp drill bits and easy outs....you'll need them. After you get the old frame apart, spend some quality time polishing it....it'll need it. Put a new seal around the new glass and lightly soap the exterior edge of the seal. Have your helper pull... The roads less traveled are the only ones where I tend to bend the speed limits. If police are checking speeds in an area, it is because excess speeds are causing a safety problem. I don't want to endanger my life or anyone else's. My 2 cents. Of course, I have been fined for speeding in an area where I did not realize the speed limit was so low. I've only put about 500 miles on my Rivergate conversion. I initally had questions about the custom clutch. I thought the trowout bearing was a datsun part? Anyway... I was concerned about being able to replace the clutch should rivergate not be in existence when the time came. However, I talked to my local transmission shop, and they said it would be no problem to fabricate. I plan on putting some serious miles on the Midget this summer. Ask me again at the end of the year how it is going. Otherwise I am happy with the clutch performance.... MORE

Hi just found your group.I am restoring a 59 bugeye and would like to know the best way to tilt the hood foreward.MiniMania has a hinge kit for $160 yikes!seems like a lot for a couple pieces of metal and a bolt or two.also whats the best way to latch it? Nigel- Like you, I have tried very hard to maintain originality with my restoration. I went thru the same process you are with the sill color. I had my body shop spray the sills gloss, and from across the shop I can tell you it looked just plain goofy. We next went the other extreme and used a flat black, and it looked just plain awful. Is it the same manifold on a 1500TC as on a Midget? (or on a Sptifire, come to that?) All the so-called knowledgeable folks' books say the Spitfire had slightly more power than the Midget due to a less restrictive exhaust, because there was more space available under the bonnet for it. Remind me never to take these apart again, what a job getting the rev counter bezel back again. The inner disk just would not drop in, it had sprung out never to go back. Two G clamps and a small hammer persuaded it to reseat. Found a selection of gasket material by the yard to make all new seals. Have tried 12 v 5 watt side light bulbs, much improved but they are bayonet connectors not MES so am working on adaptor. Ed Great car, but the problem is it has blue seats and the seat styles changed at different dates depending on colour (I expect they were used up at different rates) and my 65 rebuild project (55554) falls right in the middle of the changes and came to me with no seats and black trim although the heritage certificate says red trim. According to Horler if it originally had red trim it should have buckets, if it had black trim it should have the later style seats like yours. Maplins have a web site (maplin.co.uk) and do mail order from it. The wire is quite thick for the panel lights and shoulds easily take the extra load. When I get to Maplin I will buy a holder and a halogen bulb, and try to modify the existing holder. In the past I have smashed up a bulb and mounted the new holder in the screw bit of the old bulb. Now the old bit screws into the original holder and the new bulb goes into the new holder. Got two problems, not a lot of light and bad... MORE
Alan, I am one of the ones quite keen to brighten up the instrument lighting. When I am driving on rural roads at night I usually switch off all the dashboard lights. I love night driving on empty roads with the cockpit in darkness In fact the high beam warning light really anoys me - it is far too bright at night and I keep meaning to do something about that. Tim, I take it that you don't wish to do the work yourself? Repairs to a 1500 engine are really quite straightforward and its a really great way to learn about all aspects of the engine. An expert like Frank will take an engine and gearbox out in about an hour, I take a little longer, more like 1hour 15 minutes. If your engine was running OK before the head gasket blew then there is no need to take the engine out although obviously the clutch will. Well, I obviously I missed this (must have read it before jumbo Mickey D's "kicked in":) but it's nice to hear another of your experiene agrees, and most especially in that it was a "tuned" unit at that. Terry, On the several that I have dismantled, they have all had mastic between bezel and glass, O-ring between glass and the next ring in, and an 0-ring between the case and the metal dashboard. I don't think there is supposed to be an O-ring behind the metal reflector ring. It is stepped and fits against the rim of the case, leaving a gap between it and the dial face to let the light through. One tip here is that you should save discarded O rings from the rear hubs as these will fit around the tach and speedo... MORE

Hi Tried scanning in a colour postcard, 6 in x 4 in. 150 dpi = 1.5 meg file < 10 sec to scan 300 " = 6 " " 600 " = 24 " " took 1.5 min to scan 1200 " = 96 " " 2400 " = 385 meg file This is bit map no compression. Tried jpeg format. All jpegs have some compression, normally adjustable. Tried 600 dpi in jpeg format minimium compression and got 12 meg file, scanned in less than 1 min tried 150 dpi in jpeg format minimium compression and got 700 k... MORE
Hi I would like to see what speed I am doing in the dark so Speedo is out and apart. 1972 RWA midget Questions Chrome bezel is filled with black gunge at rear, is this the remnants of an 0 ring that seals the bezel to the glass? Is there an 0 ring between the Speedo and dash board? The inside of the Speedo is sky blue from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock and white for the other half. Is this correct and why? To fix this you are going to have to open up the case and get into the detailed workings. It is pretty delicate stuff in there and parts do wear out. You may prefer to get it to a specialist to recondition. If you do want to sort it yourself you will need to remove the chrome bezel and glass and then undo the two screws on the back of the case. Two points from the UK, Nigel is right that "National Insurance" (tax) is around 8% (actually slightly more) but this is not hypothecated to the Health Service. UK governments do not use tax in this way, but pool all tax income and then divide it up between the various "needs", so it is not really possible to say how much of each revenue source goes to each service. My second point is that, although the UK health service has its failings, it is at least free at the point of delivery, and this I think is a real plus... MORE

Hi Bob, We are not experts by any strech of the imagination, but I can tell you some of the experience the wife and I have had with photo scanning. 1200 DPI takes forever to scann, and unless you have a couple of gig of ram, forever to try and work with. Also, I was told that most printer wont print better than 3-400 DPI, so why scan more than that? I found some old negatives in my father in law's stuff, of B 36 's taking off from Tinian where he was stationed. I plan on scanning them... MORE
