G'day Paul Sounds like you have a Mini Metro Turbo head gasket. It's hard and black, and in my opinion the very best you can get. Apart from being a denser material, it also has re-inforcing fillets between the cylinders. My race engine runs 13:1 compression, and I have NEVER blown a head gasket. All the guys racing Sprites and Midgets Down Under use this gasket. One guy I know has re-used his 3 times now (he's cheap) and even he doesn't blow them! The Payen part number is TAM1521, at least that's what it is on the packet... MORE
Nigel... It's not finite and it's not infinite. There is no black and white answer. All depends upon circumstances of use and degree of maintenance/preventive maintenance performed. As has been said..."tuning" these wheels could be done locally when I owned my MGA's in my high school/college years, back in the late 50's, early 60's.. Back then, most shops had the equipment and knowledge to properly work on them ("tuning"/tightening of spokes, etc). This is now specialty work performed by a few and no longer inexpensive. So today's W/W owner had best treat them well and practice quality preventive maintenance... MORE
Jim- I will keep you posted. I am "down" to about 200 lbs but am over 6' tall. Ingress and egress is not a problem, but the movement of my foot from gas to brake is difficult. It would be impossible if my feet were bigger than size 8! Your idea about "relaxing the webbing underneath is excellent. I will give it a try. I plan on adding to the metal clips so I can tighten them as needed in the future. Talked with a friend of mine who does a lot of restoration work. He explained the different... MORE
Thanks for the suggestions. As several of you have stated, the new foam may not "collapse" quite like the old stuff. I am going to speak with an interior shop to see what they would do. With respect to a smaller steering wheel, I doubt that would help. It is my knees hitting the underside of the dash that is the problem, not the steering wheel (although a smaller wheel would really help with ingress and egress!!!!). Finally got around to restoring the seats. Got covers from England and components (webbing, foams, etc.) from M*ss. Everything went together nicely and the seats look great. Installed the driver's seat last night. Maybe I am used to the old worn out seat, but it seems I am really "high" (insert joke here...). The seats are very firm with almost no "give". From the bottom of the steering wheel to the top of the seat is five inches. I feel as though I am looking over the top of the windshield, rather than thru it. Is this all just... MORE
Hi Bill B, There are 2 4 speeds that you can use. One is the same size as the 5 speed and is found in all the years of the 210 and any of the B210 years with a 1400 engine. The other is a smaller one in configuration, but bolts and mounts exactly the same as the 5/4 speeds. It will be found in ANY of the B210, 1300, and 210 WITH a 1200 engine. This trans is wonderful. Even spacing on all the gears and shifts like glass. I have one in my van and love it.... MORE
The Rover K series is a popular replacement and gives enormous power. Can be used with a Ford Sierra transmission or a Rocket box or the Caterham 6 speed. Frontline developments do all the bits you need. Kevin, I do not think, or I have never seen a 1965 Midget with a lighter. Do not see any photos in the Terry Horler book. However, on later models the cigar lighter is located on the front right of the radio console. If the sole purpose of the lighter socket is for power for portable devices then any generic 12V cigarette lighter socket will work and no need for the actual lighter unit. You could mount the socket out of sight behind the dash or just below it. Radio Shack has several different sockets one with an angle... MORE
Bill, Fairly common fault. The selector fork wears and the result is that the 1st / 2nd gear moves a fraction too far along its splines and allows the spring loaded plungers to pop out, preventing the gear cluster from moving back as it should. Sorry, that is probably not too clear until you have dismantled the box to fix it! Cause is likely to be from "crawling" in first gear with your hand resting on the lever. Could any listers with Pertronix ignitions please take a look at the serial number on the little black box and let me know what they are & which Pertronix kit they have? This would be greatly appreciated. I just bought a brand new (or at least never used) Aldon distributor for my Bugeye. The dizzy has a Pertronix ignition installed also, but I can't tell which one. Collar is marked LU143/LU144, and black "box" is has a small label reading 20V-4X and 2 wires (red/black). Gentleman I bought it from had a bunch of parts that he new nothing... MORE
Thank you for your responses By Modern driving I am assuming that they are talking about fast road and motorway driving 60-80 mph. I'm not sure exactly what rpm she'd be doing at that speed but I would imagine that it would be around the 4000+ mark. Given what has been said then in 90F summer heat an oil cooler would be very beneficial for fast use. However I wouldn't take the Midget onto the motorway for the same reasons that I wouldn't take the Cooper onto the motorway 1. It is too small and vulnerable 2. It is... MORE

Listers - My current project Midget (75) has no motor or trans, I'm searching for alternate powertrains to transplant into it, does anyone have photos, info or web sites they have run across on hot rodded Midgets they could pass along to me? Currently have a Ford 2.0 litre 4 cylinder with matching 4 speed, but looking at other options, plan on looking around for a 2.3L Ford 4 cyl with a five speed, which could be transplanted without too much hassle. Ford 2.3L turbo motor would be nice too, but don't want to spend a ton of cash,... MORE

Hi all I have just received an excellent Spridget catalogue from MOSS that not only lists all of their parts but is also a tuning guide as well. In there they recommend that for modern driving a 1500 would really benefit from a thermostatically controlled oil cooler, uprated relief spring and a supplementary rocker oil feed kit. This is apparently due to the Spitfire engine being mated to the "wrong gearbox" and subsequent over revving leading to the oil thinning and thus pressure dropping. Don't know where those power outputs came from but they are severely wrong! Lowest power output for the Rover 3.5 litre V8 was 91 BHP in landrover Stage one form. P6/P5 form it was 184 BHP, (5 * 105 octane fuel) Late P6 and early SD1 it was 160 SD1 Vitesse and VDP EFi were 190 SD1 twin Plenum form 220 Range Rover/ MGB GT V8 130. Prior to rovers development it only revved to 4500 after it was safe to 5500 The Twin Plenum SD1 Vitesse was also the car that wiped BMW out on the race tracks... MORE

Buick / Rover v8 same engine fitted into MGB V8 Perhaps ? Chap I work with was in the develpment when the engine came over for evaluation. In its stock form gave about 93 bhp (exact figures may not be correct) . After Rover had developed (at great expense) it for Brit use, the power was down to 84 bhp. Trevor- Thanks for the help. It's been so long since I took my car apart (ten LONG years) that I just didn't remember. Thought it was some type of duct tape.... I am installing a Datsun 5 speed with the kit from Paul Asgeirrson. Really a fabulous conversion. Everything well engineered and it all fits! Guess I'm just suprised when anything fits on these cars, or for that matter when I purchase something that's not junk. The tranny looks perfect for the car and the Datsun clutch set-up is really beautiful. What an improvement. I've got it all bolted... MORE
