The fuel pump is a new SU one so I would assume that it is set for SU carbs. Is the pressure adjustable or do I have to use an external regulator?. Capt'n Bob, You of all people let them go down the wrong path? The windshield does not "Push" the air any more than a fence pushes the wind. The air flows around or over the windscreen depending on the angle of the windscreen just like the water from rain hitting the windshield while you are driving. A slanted windscreen forces the air up into the air above it creating a higher pressure above and less pressure behind the windshield, like the leading edge of an airplane wing. How about the windshield pushing the air in front of it and leaving lower pressure behind it. The air then rushes in from behind to equalize the pressure. Jim we bought a 2nd hand hardtop for the MGF and it was fitted until last week . It now occupies our daughters bedroom !!! the garage and sheds are for midget and sprite stuff !!!! The midgets hardtop is hidden under some shrubs in the garden !!!! I was amazed at how much noise deadening and extra rearward visibility you get with a hardtop relative to a soft top. So I guess I know the temperatures you're running in, eh? :) Well, you've definitely got the right oil for the season for sure, and an excellent brand at that. And you haven't got an oil cooler thermo- stat (oilstat) problem 'cause you've got no oil cooler, so we'll forgoet about this as a possible source for low pressure. Try four on the intakes and see if this corrects your issue. If not, add the other 4. It's usually the intakes that draw oil down the stem due to the vacuum present in the the intake runners. My two cents worth, John "mg_john2" 32487... MORE
Guys... Aldon (UK) has about every Series A engine tune ever thought up for these motors...in their computers. Their computers know more or less exactly what advance curve will go with your state of tune. It may not be spot on, but it'll be awfully damn close! Bearing in mind this will be a more or less once in a lifetime expense, you might want to email them and see what they can do for you? "Generic" Aldons ("Reds" or "Yellows") are probably what Moss (and others) are carrying and selling in terms of a "generic" curve fors both... MORE
I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! Well, I watched the show, "Car Search", on the Speed Channel, and it was very interesting. FYI, the show is about a group of people who have been given some money to buy a collector car each week and take it to the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction to see if they can buy low enough and sell high enough to make some money in the end. After playing that game several times, I finally bought a socket, 1 7/8" I think, from China, and since it wasn't a "Craftsman" or the like, I got it for $5-6.00 and a buck or two for the 3/4" adapter. I, and you should do it the first time. It really makes it a snap. Loosen, Tighten, Torque, no problem, and we are not talking 150 Ft. Lbs so it won't strip or break. Close but no cigar - the MkI/II Spridgets with 1098 engines had electric rev counters, though again, this is only a clue, not a definitive identifier of a car's age - this is just the sort of thing that gets swapped around when the tacho drive gearbox fails! The lack of door handles sounds right, but the biggest and most definitive mark of a Mk1 midget is the rear suspension, and its also the main cause of death (to the car!) if it's a mk1 midget it will have quarter elliptic springs not semi ecliptics like later sprites/midgets. I also suspect the MkII MG and MkIII AH had an electric rev counter, which the Mk1/II did not, this is a mechanical device driven off the back of the dynamo from a reduction device. Need to replace the 145SR13s on the original rims. Been told that 145s aren't available anymore and need to consider 155/80/13s. Would anyone mind sharing if they've had similar experience? Does anyone know if 155/80s will clear the wells in the front from lock-to-lock or the wells in the rear in height? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance. - Vince "brokenladder99" 32410... MORE
Hi, Vince... I had 155/80's (or 78's...whatever!:) on my '67....no problems. Actually, I subjectively felt the larger tire improved grip and appreciated the slightly lower revs at normal highway cruise speeds. David, On an engine with a badly worn rocker shaft it will pump oil under pressure from under the rocker bushes faster than it will drain by gravity down the push-rod holes. Once the level builds up above the ends of the valve guides - which may take a mile or two at medium to high revs, the stem seals on the valves no longer control the entry of oil down the valve guides. Brad, my rebuilt 1275 smoked blue and I followed all sorts of advice from list members to get it right before I finally fixed it. Of many "cures" attemted, the two that made the most difference in my case were: 1. Replacement of the rocker shaft. Too much oil was leaking out of the rocker bushes. It was apparent by running the engine with the rocker cover off. I left the cork gasket seated on the head and let the engine run at fast tickover. It leaked so fast that it soon created a lake on the top of... MORE
The pcv system should produce a slight vacuum. Remove the oil fill cap and put your hand over the hole with the engine running. You should be able to feel a slight vacuum at idle and also when you increase engine speed. If you feel even slight pressure, you will get oil past the rings (and probably out the rear crank "seal".)
