The heat shields are just sheet metal with no insulation. They block some radiated heat from reaching the carbs, and also deflect hot air so they work okay. When I got my tires last month at the local big tire chain, they were peddling filling the tires with nitrogen as a way to increase gas mileage. I asked counter boy how that worked and he gave me some load of crap obviously written by the marketing genius who came up with the pitch. (Who's probably getting rich on it... so how smart am I?) It should be rather easy to find some study on the subject on Google. I think it is just a way for big companies to separate you from a few more dollars. When was the last time you had a tire damaged to the degree it had to be replaced from the inside by oxy? I ask you! It might get better gas mileage, but I bet it would not be more than a 01% gain. Adding one psi pressure would give you that much gain in mileage IMHO. A lot of the racers around here are using it,... MORE
Finally got my 1500 on the road after only 16years. It celbrated by breaking its speedo drive, (the cable is intact and the angle drive working fine). Just looked in the moss catalouge and it lists 3 Speedometer pinions, in 20 tooth, 21 tooth and 22 tooth versions. I have a 1975 car with 3.9:1 diff and a 120mph spedometer, anyone know which one I need?. I also have plans for fitting a 3.7:1 diff, would I be right in thinking this would need a differnt pinion, if so which one?. I also have a sticking thottle, mostly down... MORE
If the car has been sitting around for years, especially with some fuel in the tank, the sender tends to absorb fuel, making it heavier, so it won't float. Or the linkage weakens with age, so the sender doesn't behave normally. I had this with my Mk1 Midget, but never did anything about it, as I always filled the tank after doing about 180-190 miles. OK, Rob C. Belay the first paragraph of my previous post then. Now that I know the circumstances, I totally agree with your mech. in that you need to "vent" the crankcase, either to the airfilters (if possible) or to atmospher via a "breather" similiar to the one you can find at www.speedwellengineering.com under "performance, misc.". These breather cans are also available for more reasonable prices from Jeg's and/or Summit . Open up whatever vents you have on the valve cover and skip the charcoal cannister competely with respect to the motor. Now, because the fuel system is closed... MORE
Cap'n The car cam with a ZS150. I transplanted a Spitfire 1300 carb/manifod setup. The original set up had a valve cover tube and a carb tube that connected to a charcoal canister along with the fuel vent tubing. The pro I had work on the car is good. His opinion is that I need negative pressure off the valve cover which between a 30 year old cannister and some suspect tubing connections I am not getting. Anyone know if stainless steel fuel tanks are still available for early Spridgets, mine is a MKIII Sprite 1966. I Know they were available a couple of years back but currently none of the usual suspects here in the UK seem to stick them. I think the Idea of a stainless tank is brilliant since there is mo possibility of corrosion crud building up on the inside and finding its way in to the carbs (ever) and no need to paint the outside. Hi Jeremy, Water flows from the block/thermostat housing to radiator top then cooler water returns to the water pump from the bottom of radiator. Thermostat should have the heat sensor/bellows toward the block. There may be a passel of other things that are wrong too. Such as radiator blocked with debris, return hose collapsing, heat gauge off calibration, vapor lock, fuel hoses partially blocked, the list goes on!! Don't run the car without a thermostat, either. Gavin... I know little about 1500's and nothing about European spec types however, I 'd not be driving the car with a fuel leak in the engine compartment. Not as bad as a Series A wherein the exhaust/carbs reside on the same side of the engine nor a situation wherein the higher pressures of fuel injection may be involved but....not a good idea nontheless. Pick up from your supplier an SU carb overhaul kit. This will contain the n ew gaskets/seals you no doubt will need to put a stop to the fuel leak, assuming it is from the... MORE
I don't know what the deal is with motors and me. I think the only things I have that have good motors anymore are the two new cars I got in December. They are good, because I purchased them brand new. I don't tear things up; I just tend to buy other peoples worn and abused stuff, and more than likely they tell me things are fantastic, when in fact they aren't. Same here with my mk3 midget. When leaded fuel was around I got 200 to the tank full. Then it started dropping. I think it's something to do with mode rn day fuel!! "They don't make it like they used to". Also, when I firat got the car nearly 20 years ago, it cost me =A35 to fill up from empty, now it's over =A325. It's a sign of the times!! Rick, On my Sprite, I run 2" pipes from my header collectors back to oval Flowmaster mufflers. They are pulled up hard against the floorboards with a quadruple layer of fiberglass/foli insulation. My floorboards do not get hot. The fuel and brake lines and the battery cable nearby are heavily insulated and I've had no problem with those either. Oh, and the exhaust sounds tolerably quiet at low loads and idle, but nasty when on it. My ground clearance is about 3" at the low spots on the collectors and mufflers. my 79 midget has (for three years) always gotten 200 miles to a tank of gas. when I filled it up it always took 6.2 gallons. Now, fer some reason, I'm getting 160 miles to the tank, but it only takes 5.9 gallons. Is this a sign that the level sender is going south? Or is this a sign of something else wrong? Does your fuel gauge go to the far right after a fill-up? I've found that a minor short (or excessive resistance) has made my fuel gauge read a bit low in the past. Finding a loose or corroded/rusted ground wire has usually fixed the problem. If the gauge does go full right, it might be a tank/sender issue. Adam J.Kopff 36734... MORE
The "Ford" B-24's leaked fuel internally.... Ford cut corners in their construction. Consolidated found them out and turned 'em in to the government since Consolidated intially got some "heat" on this. Forgot what the outcome was. wfo yes it has good suspension ,i got the springs, brakes, swaybar, and urathane bushins from moss motor. the car set about a 1/2 inch of the ground. for the rear im using a rear from a s-10 2.43 gears, and one set up with3.73 gears. i have takin the car out to the drags it did a 13 flat at 113 mph spinning the tires down the track with the 2.43 gears. as for the conversion i didnt do it but the guy that did said it was simple. i bought the car from my old boss who... 1. skip vice, it draws the heat out. Use a cinder block, or something like it to just set it on and heat. Acylene/MAPP gas & Oxy also works well and is hotter. We are talking a large chunk of metal and small rubber seals. 2. or hotter. 3. Or large pliers to pick up while hot and rap against a piece of wood on the ground to knock the piston out. Works great.
