Just got my repair manual. It is a big help. Checked the fluid levels in both the clutch and transmission. Topped them both off. No change. Bled the slave. It had air. No change. Clutch still isn't disengaging. That is about the extent of what I can do in my backyard and will be sending it to the doctor on Monday. Didn't see any place (in the manual) that indicated that the clutch can be adjusted. Didn't touch the turn signal. Thanks for the help. "Rick & Deb" 23934... MORE
"Mailbox fabricated as Cold Air Box" LOL, Bob.... I gotta find a use for the "flag feature"...must be useful for something! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 23940... MORE
I am looking at removing the air cleaner (and box) and the warm air tube from my '79 midget. I would like to replace with something a little sportier(?), like a K&N chrome round air cleaner. Since I don't have an air pump on the car, I assume the smog stuff doesn't work anyway. I only drive it in the summer, so the heat riser isn't doing much, that I can tell. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement air cleaner? "Michael " 23921... MORE
A few months ago there was a tool on ebay for installing this nasty little circlip. It looked like it threaded into where the hydraulic pipe goes on the cylinder and then another threaded ring compressed the circlip until it popped into place. I missed out on the ebay one but would now like to get myself one, preferably in the UK but if you know where they are available in the US then let me know that too. Cheers Jeremy "Jeremy Cogman" 23914... MORE
Sure, Mike... I already have the outside air intake hole fabricated and a 4" rubber tube for the mailbox I bought to be used as a "cold air box". I will "fashion" it once I have decided whether to stay with the double SU set-up or go with my 45 DCOE. Gotta do a little experimenting with various choke sizes on the Weber first, though. The box will breath engine compartment air in the winter months and cooler outside air (for better performance) in the warmer months. Best of both worlds! :) Paint your box with whatever paint/ color... MORE
Hmm... I would look for a K&N filter to use within the air box and turn the box into a "cold air" box by running appropriately sized rubber tubing to it from an outside air source. Cooling of the induction air charge makes for HP!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 23923... MORE
No criticism intended, Don May... ....just curious. Weber 45 carbs have many tiny channels as well. Even with a good K&N filter, grit gets in there also, blocking (most likely) the idle and progression systems so, I believe it.... doesn't take much at all. In the case of the Weber, the tiny stuff can be seen in the bottom of the float bowl. Looked like tiny specks of sand but most likely, corrosion from an older fuel tank I bet. Cap'n. Actually . . . no . . . but blowing it out cleared up the obstruction and I have had this occur on another Midget. It's hard to blow on a small pipes on a float chamber lid as hard as you can and look for a small flak flying through the air Bob. I was seeing little white stars instead :-) Don "Don May" 23901... The phone rang at 7:30 am Sunday morning "I'm stranded in Angles Camp, Jr. died," Jr. the name he gave the 63 Midget I sold him. "I just need a around town car." He said when he bought it. He had owned a Midget before and I was confidant I was not selling to an innocent in the ways of classic British cars. I had made clear that since I retrieved it from a carpentry work shop where it sat on blocks for twenty years and brought it back to life that I had not driven it over five... MORE

Well, Guy Weller..... The tonneau when "down" would block one of those speakers mounted in the area (otherwise neat location, BTW!:) you speak of, Guy. So, I too will experiment with a single earpiece set-up initially and see how it works out. "Roger" on the ear plugs...used them all the time together with Dave Clark headset "gel" ear pads when flying the friendly skies. Audible sound was "behind us" in any event, most of the "hearing" taking place in the spine and bones (vibrations). Nontheless, there is plenty of slipstream (air) noise going by the cockpit at speed. The... MORE
Hi I have also seen this. The carb ,air filters and breather system are all different,so to is the washer bottle is wrong.Makes me think what else has been changed Cheers Gordon Denson "Gordon Denson" 23793... MORE
G'day guys Just thought I would add my thoughts on the over/under heating problem. My race car has a radiator I had made about 7 years ago. 3 cores and it's so thick it has cut-outs to clear the steering rack mounts! On a 100 F day, I can't get it to heat up. I warm it to around 180 F in the pits, go out for a 10 lap race and come in at 170 F. I was recently asked by a customer to make a copy of the radiator for his car, so with 7 years now... MORE

After stripping off the front end outer metal work and cleaning the engine compartment I discovered there is a crack in the transmission bell housing. The tab like area at the top of the clutch bell housing where the top two bolts are located has a horizontal crack below them.. It does not appear to be a major structural problem once the transmission bell housing is bolted on as all other areas and bolts are sound. It looks like an easy in place weld job. Is it possible to weld the aluminum housing material? Some PO strangeness as usual... MORE
Nigel, I acid etched before I did anything else. In fact on mine I had sand blasted it myself and it was very, very bright shiny steel. I acid etched within an hour of the sandblasting, just after cleaning everything out with compressed air. Even if you cannot do this I would aim to clean it up as best you can and then put the primer on as soon as possible. Filler goes on later, but is porous and also absorbs moisture so keep it dry or cover the filler with a surface coat. It may be worth treating... MORE
I have a new Kenlowe kit, built to go in front of the radiator in my 71 crossflow 1275 Midget, but I'm interested in fitting the electric fan off a 89 Civic Si behind the rad if there's room. With my engine out, I can't measure the gap. The Honda unit looks far more robust an air mover, but will need a minimum or 4 and a half inches - 5'd be better. Could one of you boys 'n girls go measure? Sure would appreciate it. It's 86 degrees in my shop today - could be worse, eh? Thanks... MORE
Mark Don't do it the gauge is easy to remove the dash is not. Just undo the knurled nut at the back of the clamp and pop it out, the oil pipe union can be unscrewed from the engine or the back of the gauge (once popped out) the water temperature sender connection if it is into the rad (as mine is on the 66) can be a bit of a pig to remove without damaging the sender cable but if you are renewing the gauge this will not matter. Best of luck Dave (65 & 66 Sprites in... MORE
Yes, Electric Fan well worth doing (IMHO). Mine is actually a mk2 Sprite but I have a Kenlowe fitted as a puller (i.e. inside the engine bay pulling air in through the rad) and the engine fan removed. I actually ignored the Kenlowe fitting kit which is a one size fits none Heath Robinson affair. I slung the fan on some brackets attached to the shroud. It's been like that for several years 20k miles and seems fine. Ava would have a different rad. of course but still possible I expect. It's a great mod beacuse it's win-win. The... MORE
G'day Bill Use ordinary auto electrical wire and wrap it tightly around 1/4" pipe (or screwdriver shaft). It will become, and remain, curly. Or you can just loop the wire around the steering column 2 or 3 times, loosly. It will tighten up a bit when you turn one way, and loosen when you turn the other way, but it still works just fine. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 23214... MORE

Wimpy.... There are 1500 owners who would very much like to be in your shoes with your 1275 driveline set-up, believe me!! When YOUR transmission goes, you can at least exchange it for the readily available, easily installable Datsun 210 conversion for about what it costs for a rebuilt British ribcase at today's prices. AND, you have the benefit of already having the higher geared 3.7 diff. as well (most likely) which came stock in the later 1500 Spridgfires. Which is a good thing considering the first 3 ratios for the 210 gearbox are slightly lower than those in... MORE
Brad, I can't comment directly on your question, but some things I know (or think). Weber side drafts aren't much fun to try to tune and keep in tune. If I were going to upgrade the carbs on an A- series, I'd go with twin 1-1/2 or a single 1-3/4 SU. Easy to tune and parts are no problem. I did once convert an Elan from twin Strombergs to a single side draft SK, which is basically a Weber copy. It ran like stink, but I ended up buying many dollars worth of jets, air bleeds, emulsion tubes, ect,... MORE
