Castor Oil & Castrol (Castrol R) Got to admit, Dave, I've no clue 'cause I do not know whether the "early" Castrol Oils I grew up with in the late 50's & early 60's were vegetable oil or petroleum based, though I believe it was the later. And the Castrol's before that??? Castrol "R"....formulated for high rpm higher pressure, anti-foam, "racing" oil I would think but here again, not familiar the specific base or formula. Alan It's always very difficult to put prices on cars, specially without the ben =3D=0D efit of seeing them, and owners quite often have very strange ideas on what things =3D=0D are worth, but at the end of the day, naturally, you need to decide what it =3D=0D s worth to you. David... A flat spot (most especially with a VP3 Kent 276+ cam) is not unusual with a 45DCOE using the larger 4.5 or 5.0 aux venturi. You will notice this carb configured for racing uses the smaller 3.5 aux vent which brings the main system "in" a little earlier in the game. Was using 1.4+ intake valves and a VP3 cam. Noticing this, I changed out my 4.5's for 3.5's and jetted upwards accordingly to 145 mains and 175 air correctors while retaining the 50F9 idle jets the carb came with. Don... Is the '73 vac. cannister supposed to be ported to a carb or ported to the intake manifold? Lessee! Normally a car will fog up on the inside if pretty much air tight and the driver leaves a warmed interior, closes the the car door and leaves it in cold wx for a while. Or, the car is warm inside after use in the above circumstances and the carpets (floors) are wet. Or the car is left overnight on a humid cool night under the stars with the windows pretty much open. Better late than never. I just opened my Charcoal canister and have been able to get to the charcoal. After you screw off the bottom look around the threaded edge on the canister body, at fist it just looks like a threaded edge but on close inspection you will see about four slits located around the edge about 1/16" high by about a 3/8" wide. The edge of the round plastic retaining plate, the one with the three plastic bars has protrusions around its edge that snap into these slits. Use a screwdriver blade to push them in working... MORE

Hi Bill, What sort of state/ age are the flexible rubber hoses? Perhaps they have swollen and collapsed internally. The pressure bleeder I use takes its air supply from an inflated tyre so operates at about 30psi. I guess you could increase pressure without any worries. Guy "Guy Weller" 28118... MORE

An interesting discussion . Thanks for your input guys, I guess a lot of people were also under the impression that the Up movement counteracted the Down movement in terms of volumetric displacement. To sum it up then, 1) thethe crankcase does breathe a little.2 ) Most of its pressure is caused by blowpast the piston rings. 3) If required the original (GWO) charcoal cannister should be used.4) alternatively a pipe can be fed to a ventilated container and regularly emptied. Hi, Guy and David, There are varying degrees of symmetry and our engines are not symmetrical vertically. I also no mathematician, but I am an engineer! The simplest way I can describe it is to say that:- when the crank is at 90 degrees from TDC, the pistons are not half way down the bore! At this point in a 1275 motor the piston is at 57% of its stroke. Hence when the crank is in this position all 4 pistons are at 57% stroke. Compare this when the crank is at TDC or BDC, you will have 0%... MORE
Hi Geri, I am no mathematician, so I am quite happy to accept what you say, and I am not arguing with you... but logic makes it hard to believe! If all 4 pistons are identical, and the throw on each crank journal the same, then I cannot see why the volume displaced by one going down should be any different from the displacement of the adjacent one going up. Now I'm thinking I need to fit the water heated inlet manifold also. So the question changes a little. How much hassle is it to fit an LCB in a midget. Mr Zappa, You should have a Zenith cd150 carb installed on your car if it is stll as originally equipped. These carbs have been trouble since the day they were installed new and only get worse as time goes on. As for the fuel leak. Look real close at the rubber hose where it attatchs to the carb body. Small hairline cracks frequently are found causing fuel to weep. Have someone crank it over and you watch right here for where the leak appears. Another possibilty is the auto choke (if installed) can be a pain in the a$$.... MORE
Zappa? Is that you Zappa? Leak is most likely caused by a sticking fuel float inlet valve. It may have a bit of grit in it. They are easy to replace, but try cleaning it first. Another likely culprit is the short length of flexible plastic tube that connects from the base of the carburetta bowl to the main jet. They come loose and leak at the bowl end. There should be a small neoprene washer, a brass washer and a gland nut. Don't overtighten the gland nut, but do make sure the pipe is pushed well into the... MORE
BL thought it was worth doing for the MG Metro. That had what is effectively an LCB design, albeit in two parts: a cast manifold for the 3 into 2 part, and the exhaust had twin front pipes going into a 'Y'. You could probably fit this to a Spridget with a little bit of ingenuity (though on second thought, it's probably more hassle and less effective than a tubular one) Regards David "David Jacobs" 27942... Without having the benefit of Vizards book along side of me. Cap'n Bob. Are tubular LCB manifolds worth the presumed hassle of fitting. I know they were a real B*st*rd to fit into a mini , apart from the noise I didn't really notice humungous amounts of increased performance. Given exhaust gas velocity exiting from a ported head (now that desription could apply to some listers LOL) is a LCB worth fitting along with a stainless straight through pipe with a single silencer? I agreed to that. See not all the air/fuel mixture get combusted or blow out the exuast. Some of the got by the piston ring gap or right between the rings and cylinderwall (bad) inturn increase the crankcase pressure. One of the few ways the pressure can be relieve is through the PCV and if that thing is clog, the oil seal at the crankshaft will be the one that take toll. Pat "Pat S." 27912... MORE
You are correct, in a perfect world, the pressure would balance out to be zero, but a little pressure sneaks past the rings, the valve guides, etc and any positive pressure pushes oil out the rear seal. Interesting side tangent when talking about two cycle engines. When I was a 16 year old kid, I worked for a marine place and we built racing Johnson outboard motors. Roy Rogers,( the great cowboy movie star) had us build his engines. Twin Johnson 35's for off shore racing. My boss and I drilled the crankcase full of holes and inserted one... MORE
In a 4 cylinder engine, two of the pistons are rising while the other two are falling so the net volume change in the crankcase should always be zero but it does suck in air when everything's off and cooling down. David "David Jacobs" 27896... MORE
I should ask the guys at work, but I'm on holiday 'til the 5th Jan. so I'll ask you guys. Because of the action of the rods and pistons, doesn't the sump / crankcase, suck as well as blow? I know two strokes use this phenomena to suck in petroil / air mixture then transfer it by blowing it to the head ready for combustion. BECKERS states (in part).. "....it lowers fuel octane anyway" Yeah, this is true and a tough one to call (except in a high compression motor or when higher octanes are available at reasonable cost) against crankcase evacuation of vapors/pressures with respect to oil being forced passed seals or out the rear scroll "seal". But it's basically why I run "vented" instead of "evacuated", the thought of introducing oil (in any amount) into the combustion process "going against the grain" personally, though there are cases (Judson and to a lesser extent, Shorrocks applications) where this comes with the territory so... Paul.... Assuming you are using the normal intake manifold mounted stock PCV valve, most likely the rubber diaphragm is "weak"....we all know what happens to rubber exposed to ozone (air) either sitting on a shelf in a parts wharehouse or mounted on an engine which has sat for a long period of time. The high idle along with intermitten excessive "smoking" is almost a dead giveaway. Check that hose between the flame arrester and the PCV valve as well. Rubber develops "hairline" cracks with age. Like most rubber, it lasts longer when used (not abused) while exposed to whatever... MORE
Thanks to all the "start-up" advice, the initial run-in went without a hitch. But a strange problem cropped up. Engine is a fresh high compression 1275 with PCV only. It would run very well for the first few minutes, and then start to belch smoke the likes of which few could imagine. It would do this for a couple minutes, then run normal again. Also, I could not get it to idle below 1200 rpm despite the fact that the carbs were fresh and were properly set up. With throttles CLOSED it still idled at about 1200. After doing... MORE
