Not an original idea on Don's part....'-) He'd been to my garage where I have two Bugeyes stacked. (or used to anyway) See "Stack-O-Matic" link on my web site. http://www.gerardsgarage.com/FS_Garage.htm Gerard "gerardchateau" 24735... MORE
Kevin, 1500 run pretty clean ususally. I got a '75 to pass in California without a working (gutted( air pump and blocked air injection lines. I would think the EGR valve is essential though. Make sure the carb is properly tuned at that you choke is complete off with the car warmed up. I would run the carb as lean as possible and do a fresh oil change before having it tested. I don;t have a lot of experience with SMOG cars, so maybe someone else has somethig to ad. Gerard "gerardchateau" 24721... MORE
It was your Stack-O-Matic that led me to suggest it to him. It is/was very impressive. I had forgot were your plans were located but you came to the rescue. Don "Don May" 24738... MORE
Dave.... Same principle as A series or any other head. Larger intake valves improve breathing in terms of "mass flow" at the expense of "velocity" in terms of low end torque. Like everything else, it's a compromise situation, as in upgrading cam. You give up a little at the bottom or a little more in the middle and top. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24667... MORE
Trevor Be careful about leaving the car in primer for periods of time. It's not really suitable for this, which is why the car get's a topcoat! Depends a lot on the weather where you are mind, if you don't get much rain or there isn't a lot of moisture in the air it may well be ok. I've used good old Nitromors to strip mine, seemed to work fine even if it did take a few coats, sadly I have no experience of the stripper you've mentioned so cana't help there. Good luck with it. Welcome, Sam... Suggest you follow DLancer's advice and be prepared to do both rear brakes as well (unless the other side is basically new) as that oil usually renders that particular side useless in this respect.... Afraid I do not have the parts you seek, though I do already have a copy of Blaggot's fine book, thank you! As far as additives go, don't exactly know what motivates you in this, Sam. Usually, a quality brand is all that is required along with oil/filter changes every 3K or so. It is the additive package which is usually the difference... MORE
Thanks for the info! A quick question: You described how the EGR valve hooks up to the air intake manifold. How does it connect to the exhaust? Thanks again, Kevin "kari_kevin" 24482... MORE
Hello all, I'm looking for information on how the emissions controls are configured on a 77. Specifically how the Air pump & EGR valve are setup. Right now on mine the air pump feeds though a check valve directly to a connector on the tail end of the exhaust manifold. Did that year have a diverter or gulp valve? The EGR valve is missing. Did it have one? How was it hooked up? There is an elbow connector on the air intake manifold that isn't hooked up to anything. I've been looking at pictures of engines on the web,... MORE
President Bush arrives at Heathrow Airport on a state visit. A 300-foot long red carpet stretches out to Air Force One and Mr. Bush strides to a warm but dignified hand shake from Queen Elizabeth II. They ride in a silver 1934 Bentley limousine to the edge of central London where they then board an open 17th century coach pulled by six magnificent white matching horses. They ride toward Buckingham Palace, each looking sideways and waving to the thousands of cheering Britons. So far everything is going well. Suddenly the right rear horse lets fly with the most horrendous,... MORE
"Aldon Distributors" Aldon did a PerTronix equipped 45D mechanical curve for my 8.3-1 motor, based upon a planned (Judson) 6psi boost curve. Less than $300 including shipping. Bill Perry got the dizzy. In checking it on a distributor machine, it did not match the written curve provided. Bill shipped the dizzy up to me in CT so Pete Sachs guys could check it out on their machine(s). Sure enough....wrong curve. Shipped it back to Aldon after trading e-mails. Returned in a heartbeat with the "correct" curve...Aldon paid all shipping costs (by Air..both ways). Morals: 1.Check this part as you... MORE

Thank You for the exaust and intake manifold, sorry the mail was so slow delivering payment to you, so I canceled the first check. The new check is in registered mail to you, you should recieve it by 15 Aug, I will log on to USPS to see if you sign for the mail. Thank You Bill Burger "ooohaynow1" 24386... MORE
George, I have not followed this entire thread, but see you original message included. If my suggestion has already been mentioned, then never mind. The besta way to sort out the source of the problem is a leak-down test. This requires compressed are and a special set of gauges that will compare the pressure in with the pressure out. A difference of 10 percent or more indicates a problem. It will also tell you the source of the leak by listening to where the air is escaping, (valves rings, head gasket, etc.) One thing that sometimes causes your symptoms,... MORE
George... I think you have three problems: 1.The intake manifold mounted PCV system uses the vented/filtered oil filler cap to provide for incoming air. 2. The most effective crankcase scavenging consists of a feed to the PCV valve from below the pistons. 3. The "cover" to the old mechanical fuel pump fitting on the forward left side of the block just above the flange can be used as a "source" for relieving lower crankcase vapor/pressure in place of the old takeoff on the stock timing case cover which no longer exists, in consideration of your new timing cover set-up... MORE
wow.... 210? seems high for only 9.75:1 regardless.... Did you properly break in the engine before it sat all that time? Rings could simply not be seated yet.... and with that kind of compression, yes the 'blow-by' alone could blow that much oil out very easily. Seriously.... do you have a breather recirculation system? (crank fumes returned to the intake?) If so I'll bet the backs of the intake valves are already a nasty mess of oil sludge. Wow!! El warmo!! Let's see...that would be about 100F (which is warm enough, mind you!). In summer, it gets warmer in our Southern states such as Texas, where our fellow lister Brad Fornal is located. The American Airlines training center is located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and I've been down their when it gets to 104-106 on a sunny day during their hot spells. But I suspect you are correct, Nigel, in your assumption...really, for this truly "hot". I don't know how Heathrow authorities measure their temperature but I assume it is "free air". It would be warmer on... MORE
I had some problems with my Bugeye about a year ago, turned out to be air leak at the fuel tank/line connection, but in checking, my coil was too hot to touch for more that a second or two. Seems to be normal and I was, and do run standard gap on the plugs with the sports coil. Bob, Troutdale, OR USA "Robert Webb" 24181... MORE
Hello all, new to the list, new to Midgets. Question: I've got a '77 that backfires between shifts under heavy acceleration. I know why; there's excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust between shifts and detonating; I just don't know the cause. The 2 possible causes I've come up with is the air pump is supplying air to the exhaust when it shouldn't (bad valve?) or the non stock exhaust the car has (just 1 tiny Walker muffler) is allowing the fuel laden exhaust to reach air before sufficiently cooled. Which of these are more plausible, or is there... MORE

I bought my car as a rolling chassis, and live in a restricted area with only a car port (You cannot work on cars in the neighborhood, and if you do you can only work on them two hours). I bought the Duravent cover from Moss. It keeps the cats prints off. They seem to like walking on a warm hood, and with the cover being gray, I don't see any cat prints on the cover. It also has kept prying eyes from neighbors and theives from knowing what was going on. The car was fully restored in 14... MORE

Don, My '75 has the bumpers removed and I discovered the following: Rear end:Area below the tail lights is flat and obviously not meant to be visible. Front: There are two large rectangular cutouts in the wings roughly in the position of the 1275 turn signals that are there to clear a large steel support for the bumper corners. Obiously there is no chrome surround or grille worth mentioning. In addition the bumper support frame extensions must be dealt with as they stick out pas the grille opening. I have had the grille extensions sawed off back inside and... MORE
