Hello all, Well, I fired her back up today. Put my hand over the oil filler hole, and let it idle. There was no significant vaccuum and no significant air pressure. The valve cover filled about an inch and a half full of oil, with oil coming up the push rod tubes. I'm sure it would have kept going , but I shut it down. As I mentioned earlier, it sounds fine once it gets warmed up. It isn't missing and has good oil pressure. (although the oil gauge doesn't work (Problem #312 of 1067...get to that one later...)... Well Don May.... The crankcase takes incoming air from the charcoal cannister through a "graduated orifice" feed tube mounted on the valve cover, assuming the valve cover has a non-vented oil filler cap. The "exhaust" side would be the hose coming from the cannister on the timing case cover which vents into the intake system via individual hoses which feed a "graduated orifice" within each carburator. In this instance, while the engine is running, Kevin removed the oil filler cap and noticed no vacuum or pressure. So even though Kevin states the individual hoses to each carb appear pinched,... Fuel Tank In my application or case...the filter screen was attached to the end of the tube pickup and touched the floor of the tank in my application...the tube itself ended short of the tank floor by about 3/4". I don't recall the tube being anything but vertical in the last part of it's length. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25495... MORE
Martyn.... BTDT. You poor ba$ta-d....and I speak from experience. What we did was pull the tank, pull the sender, find youthful human being with really thin arms (my mechanic's 16 year old was on hand, thank God) and get in there with a long needle nose pliers (or whatever) and wrench the clogged up filter netting right off the steel fuel feed line. This will take a lot of patience to finally get a grip on the stupid thing to the extent you have the leverage to disloge it from it's pipe, unless you get lucky...which I hope you... MORE
Everything is ready to start the engine but no fuel! Arrgh! I must have screwed up when I sealed my tank! I must have sealed the outlet pipe shut. I remember someone having done the same and fixed it. I don't remember what the fix was, must be old age! I've tried poking a piece of 1/8 inch wire down the fitting but not sure if I've reached the offending blockage. Thanks for the help. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 25433... MORE
Oh... Well...the sun's out here in Stamford, CT and it's a gorgeous day. Isabel went well west and south of us....we were lucky. Carolinas got zapped as usual. Beautiful shores but I don't know how they can afford the insurance. Seems like every coupla years they get blown away...yet again. Anyway, already had the BE out for the traditional Sunday early run to Mickey D's....(my weekly junk food intake) two egg MacMuffins later and we're sippin' a large coffee and looking over Julie Strain DVD's and Videos....there's just something about Julie...wish I could put my finger on it.....:) Cap'n.... Check to see if the hose from the top of the oil separator canister on front of the timing chain cover to the carburetors is clogged up and if the two small inlet pipes where the hoses connect at the carburetors are not clogged up. Spray a little carburetor cleaner in them. Don "Don May" 25419... MORE
"the 45 has always had a flat spot" Well, a "tendency" toward this for sure, though. Not mine! :) It came with the Weber 6" long intake manifold to begin with, and the length of the intake manifold makes all sorts of difference to the whole application in all sorts of ways. Generally speaking, longer is better for the low end. It also came with the smaller 3.5 aux. venturi's unlike some other kits which come with larger 4.5's, the smaller aux. venturi allowing earlier commencement of flow from the main system during acceleration, thus shortening the period of... Hey... Don't knock the Perry's for your mechanical abiities! :):):) You got it in, right? And you like it, right? DONE!! First time around for anything is always a bit of a pain, in any event. Ask any girl....(flame suit "on"!:). OK..serious stuff.... David...are you running 3.5 or 4.5 aux venturis in your "45"? 'Cause the larger the aux venturi, the later the main system comes in so the longer you spend in the "progression" stage and the "finer" it's tuning must be throught out the period it's carrying acceleration between idle and the beginning of the main system.... "...it seems to be loose" Not uncommon, Kelly... Don't weld it, clamp it whatever you do, if such repair is appropriate. There is that bracket which goes laterally between the transmission and the pipe just forward of your seat. Not there? Have Meinecke or any decent muffler shop install "their version". Or, make one up...either way the system will need some "support".....there. Hope you are enjoying the car (at last!:). Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25280... MORE
How loud is it? Without further info. it is difficult ot tell, but it might be worth checking the exhaust pipe run, including brackets, because in my experience this is something non-spridget people often get wrong. R. "Roger Stinson" 25221... MORE
Don... "Sounds" (excuse the pun:) like you've got a glasspack (free flow) on there, maybe a Thrush or Cherry Bomb. These are "straight thru" designs (as opposed to the "baffled" stock (or Midas/Meineke/ Walker, etc.) system. It may also be the optional "GEX" straight-through type I've see advertised by MiniMania. "Straight thru" design with sound deadening packed around the "open" core allows for perfomance and/or gas economy along with allowing for a cooler running engine due to the easier trip the hot exhaust gases have outbound. allow the engine to run a little cooler as well as the exhaust... Seems the PO's of my purple 73 wanted that race car sound, well its not modified to be a race car and the sound level is annoying especially out on the freeway, like riding on top of a WW2 buzz bomb. It's a fairly new muffler and pipes so its not loud because of age. The question is, what are the considerations I should keep in mind when choosing a new muffler? Don't care if it is stock as long as it fits and is correct for the engine which I suspect is bored out a bit but otherwise... MORE
Tend to agree with you. Shortly after I bought a new 63 sprite I drove from San Diego, CA to north Louisiana in it . . . the fun of driving it on that trip ended about mid way across Texas in 90 plus temperatures and high humidity. :-) Give me a van with comfy seats and air conditioning for those long trips and my spridgets for local fun. Don, Have you watched underneath to see if you have enough travel on the slave cylinder pushrod while someone else depresses the clutch? You may have air in the line or perhaps your TO bearing is worn down to nothing (or worse*). Another possibility is a worn pivot on the clutch fork. You should feel the kind of movement (wiggle) and freeplay (travel) you have in the clutch fork while the engine is off. *I picked up a '71 once where the TO was worn down so far, it actually fell off the clutch fork when I wiggled it.... I'm still trying to put a Datsun/Nissan A14 engine/5spd tranny in a 71 Midget. I have seen pictures of one in a 76 or 77. It looks like it comes from the factory. The Datsun engine seems to be an almost direct copy of the Spitfire engine, but with improvements: 5 main bearings, good oil seals front and rear thrust bearings integral with main bearing(it won't fall out!), aluminum head with great intake ports, etc. The 5 spd tranny is butter smooth and quiet. May not get you the horsepower a RX7 will get but it can produce 100+... MORE
Interesting experiments, Paul. The most simple well-working PCV system I ever had came on the '67 engine 5 main bearing engine which I installed in place of the 3 main bearng which came in my PO'd '64 MGB. Factory PCV valve (rubber diaphragm) intake manifold mounted breathing through the liquid/vapor flame arrestor mounted on the front of the timing case cover with matched vented/filtered oil filler cap. Replaced the diaphragm once and filtered cap once in a while. And introducing a little water into the intake manifold once a year will help keep things clean. There are also a... MORE
Don, I've seen that stuff on the shelf before but have been skeptical about wotking with it. When it hardens, is the surface dry or a little tacky like the stuff you mix with a catalyst? Does it load up your sandpaper? BTW, you shoud only use the bondo to fill in or contour where you can't get the metal straight. I realize in you case THERE MAY NOT BE ANY METAL where you are applying it...LOL You should finish the last coats in Metalglaze, not bondo. It's a finer compound and sands really smooth without any air pockets.... MORE
As I continue to stretch my memory I am wondering if my smaller bracket could have a use connected with opening and closing the butterfly valve that opens the air intake to the heater. That part of the heater assembly is still in a box that has yet to be located. If that isn't it I'll just put it aside until I begin the major puzzle of trying to figure out where to place all the other pieces. ...might be on subject...but not 'specific' to the conversation.... I've been studying (extensively) the various emissions re-breather systems used on the various years and models of LBC's. Why? Trying to come up with a system that won't dump oil all over the back of the intake valves. Any of you that have ever pulled a head off an engine that has had a bit of blow-by due to worn rings, knows what I mean. The vapors (due to crankcase pressure) being discussed here, dump all that oil into the intake and end up burning onto, and crudding up the... MORE
OK, Claire...let's work the problem a bit. You keep talking of a vapor/oil seperator. Where exactly is this part located on your engine, if not on the timing chain cover. I ask specifically because the year of the car may not be the year of the engine, Claire. Fr'instance, a late 10cc engine (1098) would have the vapor/oil separtor cannster located on one of the valve lifter side covers under the intake manifold instead of attached to the timing chain cover like the later 1275 engines. Factory stock PCV valve: The "appearance" of the rubber diaphragm can be decieving.... MORE
Don, Congrats on the upcoming anniversary. If my wife of not quite 4 years and I get to the 25th it'll be a miracle if we still have all our marbles and are still sucking air. Well, I may be exagerating but 70 plus seems a long way off even from 50. Rob C robbiesg@... 24812... MORE
It seems like a long way off, but suddenly you look back and wonder where it went. Like you I did not settle down until I was almost 42 so I will be 66 on my 25th. I still suck air with the aid of Flonase, manage to get out of bed and into a vertical walking position and spend most the day on the bonnet from hell. As far as the marbles go . . . like my childhood ones they seem to be lost in the sand somewhere. Don "Don May" 24816... MORE
