Dave Fitted the exhaust manifold but it is hard up against the chassis rail, will show you. I am convinced the engine runs easier and purrs along smoother. I was going to put K&N air filters on, I wanted the one that spans the two carbs as I like the look of it but an owner I met at a show said they just made it noisier and no better so he reverted to the original ones but kept the sports manifold. You can have a look at my steering wheel problem and anyone got an oil cooler for... MORE

Over this side of the pond it has been sold as a way to make the tyres last longer (no oxygen to attack the rubber from inside or something - sounds a bit more plausible than more mileage) A guy at work recently had some new tyres on his car and they put nitrogen in without asking, so when they tried to charge him for it, he told them to take it out and put air back in! David "David Jacobs" 37127... MORE

When I got my tires last month at the local big tire chain, they were peddling filling the tires with nitrogen as a way to increase gas mileage. I asked counter boy how that worked and he gave me some load of crap obviously written by the marketing genius who came up with the pitch. (Who's probably getting rich on it... so how smart am I?) I asked him since air is already about 80% nitrogen, why should it make that much difference. So he tried again. I just laughed at him. Now they're on the radio pitching it,... MORE

Well, Bob, I have pretty fair sex...but that really isn't any of your business, now, is it? (references available upon request) ;) I ass-u-me-d the reference was to liquid detergent, too. I am an engineer, though domestic activities are limited to...well, I've already stated it's none of anyone's business...what the detergent does is two fold - 1. through the nature of the covalant bonding, contaminants are suspended in solution so they aren't deposited here and there in the low flow areas of the coolant (and, in the sink, they go down the drain with the water) 2. the pH... OK, Rob C. Belay the first paragraph of my previous post then. Now that I know the circumstances, I totally agree with your mech. in that you need to "vent" the crankcase, either to the airfilters (if possible) or to atmospher via a "breather" similiar to the one you can find at www.speedwellengineering.com under "performance, misc.". These breather cans are also available for more reasonable prices from Jeg's and/or Summit . Open up whatever vents you have on the valve cover and skip the charcoal cannister competely with respect to the motor. Now, because the fuel system is closed... MORE

Robbie.... I don't think the two are related. I think your motor has a case of "blow b y" of combustion gasses past the rings into the crankcase. I am not sure what emissions equipment you still have on your motor and do not "know" much about 1500's at all but, the feed from the charcoal cannister to the valve cover is intake air into the crankcase through a "graduated orifice" which normally works together with the "exhau st" side of this equation which feeds a graduated amount of crankcase gasses to the combustion chamber through a PCV valve... Folks, Am finally, after 6 years, getting to enjoy my LBC ('75 1500) but I still have some issues. Suggestions have been made and I was hoping group members might comment. After having my twin carb setup tweaked by a "pro" I started leaking oil out of the dipstick. Sealing the joint helped but has not cured the problem which seems to occur at sustained higher speeds and RPM's. It has been suggested that instead of running the valve cover breather tube to the charcoal cannister that I run it into the back of the air cleaner for better... MORE

I thought you might like to see these stats about dragsters. It is surprising and amazing. Bob Dragsters..... Cool info about dragsters.......... * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of race cars at the Daytona 500. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1=BD gallons of nitromethane per second. * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to even drive the dragster supercharger. * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a... Robert, You are going to be sorry you asked. For other listers, log off if this is too boring and it has NO LBC. Back in '72 or so, I was taking a camping trip around the United States with my then wife and two kids, age 9 & 10. We were driving my white Chevy California hippie van with side pipes and big tires in the rear. My wife was a fashion model and I had long hair and a beard. We stopped in Sheffield Texas for gas and I tried to buy some beer. The old crone... MORE

I rebuilt the engine recently and I am trying to sort everything out before I try starting it. I took the plugs out, I thopught I primed the pump, and then I cranked the engine untill the battery was half dead still no oil pressure. Before anyone asks, I put three quarts of oil in already and there is a new filter installed, and the oil cooler is all hooked up. Whats wrong with this picture? "gan5ub91179g" 36936... MORE

Ole.... in conjunction with my recent post of a few moments ago....and my prior experience with ww's.....air is escaping from t he tube somewhere...maybe the valve area, maybe not. Are you sure you are loosing pressure from the tube? Sometimes air can get trapped between the tube and the tire when mounted and slowly this "bubble" of air will leak out around the outside of the valve stem. How do you know it is leaking? Do you hear it? If you rub soap and water around the stem, do you get bubbles? Watch it and see if the air stops leaking at some point then add air to the tube and top it up and see if it still leaks. Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 36913... MORE

I misunderstood. I thought you said it misfires above 2800, when what you actually said is that it misfires AT 2800, but is okay above and below. I'm pretty sure this is a carburation problem wherein at a certain rpm there is a strange harmonic set up in the intake manifold and carburetor, which causes erratic, uncontolled movement of the air piston. Try this: Remove the old oil from the piston damper. To do this you'll have to remove the cap and the screws which hold the cover in place. Then remove the piston and it's diaphragm. Be careful,... Rick, When I went to install the Frontline tube shock conversion, I had to totally re-pipe the front brake lines from the MC to the calipers. (Frontline forgets to mention that small detail.) So I figured while I was at it, I would put in the LL. I do expect to run at the drags eventually and use it. It's good for laughs now - a couple of years ago at the Syracuse Nationals, Third Rail was a big crowd pleaser in an impromtu burnout contest in one of the hotel parking lots. Wheels - no, I have 14... MORE

Rick, My V6 is a GM crate motor sold for replacement of the Chevy S10 2.8L V6. It is rated at 160 hp if the stock S10 2bbl intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds were bolted back on it. With my headers and Holley/Offy intake system, I would guess mines's up toward 190 or so, but I have no dyno data. This month I am planning to install a set of Crane roller rockers, so that sould push it up over 200hp. My traction sucks. The 185s I have don't hook up. The only time they did when I... MORE

Thanks, Matt. No I don't have any video. I've been meaning to do something like mount a camera to the roll bar looking over my shoulder and take some of a pass through the gears, but haven't gotten around to it. It turns out that a large share of the noise at high RPM and throttle is intake noise into the 4 bbl. It's pretty noticeable with the top down. If I get some shot this summer I will post it. A launch in 2nd gear, breaking loose and then releasing the line lock would look pretty funny too.... MORE

Rick, On my Sprite, I run 2" pipes from my header collectors back to oval Flowmaster mufflers. They are pulled up hard against the floorboards with a quadruple layer of fiberglass/foli insulation. My floorboards do not get hot. The fuel and brake lines and the battery cable nearby are heavily insulated and I've had no problem with those either. Oh, and the exhaust sounds tolerably quiet at low loads and idle, but nasty when on it. My ground clearance is about 3" at the low spots on the collectors and mufflers. I have 24 ga. stainless steel skid skins... MORE

Rebuilt the ZS on my 79 this weekend. Using the Haynes manual, got all the adjustments correct until I came to the part about CO2 levels and the air screw part. I went to my local old car mechanic and asked if he had a CO2 monitor I could use. He looked at me like I had two heads. "Nope, haven't used one of those in ten years or so." My question is, how do I adjust the setting of the air screw without a monitor? I kinda set it where it ran okay, but I like being exact... MORE

Rick, I put on a glass pack for a Camaro on my 1500 (stock motor). It;s a 2 inch pipe and gives the little beast a snarly AND deep note. A little loud but not enough to do anything about. Best part was the $28 buck it cost. Though much longer it fit nicely where the stock resonator went so the system goes straight out on the Drivers side. Was also able to use the stock hanger points. Rick, The clearance depends on how low your car is and how stiff it is. The closer to the pan the pipe is, the more important a heat shield would be. Especially where your feet are. In extreme cases, I have heard of doing the math and figuring out the area of a 2 inch pipe, then getting tubing of the same area, like 1 inch by 3 inches (or what ever is the same area) and that gives you an extra inch of ground clearance. Should work fine, just make up a square to round adaptor to attach... MORE

Gentlemen - Currently working on headers/exhaust for my V8 MG Midget (Buick 215), was wonder what type of clearance between the bottom of the floor and the top of the exhaust pipes I should have, and wether to use heat shields or not? Also I notice the big thing these days is to use an x-pipe, is this a big advantage or not worth the extra effort? Also any recommendations on mufflers? Looking for somethin small in diameter (2" exhaust pipes?) & cheap like a glass pack "Thrush", want a deep throaty european sound? Had a MGB in school... MORE
