Once again faced with mystery PO modifications. These have to do with the
emission controls. First, particularly on California cars, one must find a
proper diagram of the system, something the weak of heart should not attempt
from a Haynes Manual. The car in question is a 74 Midget I assume with a
stock 1275
First discrepancy . . . The manual, if correct, shows a hose from the valve
cover to one of three hose connections on top of the evaporation canister,
check . . . that is there. Another hose goes to the gas tank vapor
collection canister in the trunk . . . check, that is there. The third
connection on top is shown going to the carburetors . . . that is capped off
on top of the canister with a rather proper looking rubber cap, no hose to
the carbs as shown in the diagram. I have never seen a diagram of the
emission control system where all three connections on top were not used.
Second modification. All diagrams for this 74 model show a hose direct from
the oil separator on the timing cover to a "Y" connector that connects to
the two SU's intakes. The hose from the oil separator to the "Y" has been
cut and the body of a brass compression fitting has been inserted with hose
clamps obviously because of the small diameter hole in it, it is being used
as a restriction device between the oil separator and the carbs. Have no
idea why that was done by a PO. ???
Any thoughts on this? The car starts great, runs well but seems to have flat
spots when under heavy load/ acceleration at about 3,000 rpm Otherwise it
runs well at freeway speeds.
