hi all, i'm thinking of buying this used peco exhaust on ebay what do u think? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&item=7900274283&category=38786&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd 1 bit rusty but is very cheap Ben Ben Lawlor 31481... MORE
850 Fiat Spyder!!!! Almost bought one of these sweet, little LIC's back when I was young and joyfully insane! :) What a sweet LIC....an absolute joy to drive in terms of "handling". About as fast (maybe!:) as a 948 Sprite but just as much of a ball to drive!! These neat little machines sounded utterly fantastic with an Abarth exhaust. (Today, a Cherry Bomb glasspack, of course!:) Thing is, the steel (frame) in Fiats of this era was of horrible quality. Here in the states, Fiat was all but banned from doing business due to this major fault in... MORE
when you say 'butting up under the piece left still........' I presume you don't mean butting up as in a butt joint but overlapping. If it overlaps under the transmission tunnel, doesn't the cross member continue there also? Conversely, if you DO mean a butt joint, isn't distortion still going to be a problem? Pedantic types need to know! Regards David "David Jacobs" 31455... MORE
David Thats a different situation, it doesn't matter if it butts up under the transmission tunnel - it will still lie flat under the crossmember - the problem was getting it to sit flat under the crossmember whilst butting it up under the piece left still attached to the sill. Well after posting the message I cooled off and went back out and looked things over. I know that if the pistons open too quickly the engine will get a lot of fuel and not that much air. So I fiddle with the mixture nut and watched the piston when the throttle was opened. The pistons rose but the headers started to glow red! Argghh, I thought I'd timed the cam in better than that. Has anyone had a vernier cam gear slip on them? I don't remember a torque value on the securing screws, it's the Kent gear.... MORE
Hi Ben The stainless braided hoses look good, but my experience with braided hoses (fuel hose) is not positive. I find that the stainless braiding either eats it's way into the rubber hose and chews through it, or the rubber hose inside perishes without showing any visible problem. The first you know about it is when the pipe is dripping in petrol! Ok, oil pipe is thicker and probably under less tension/movement than a petrol pipe and it doesn't 'melt' like some cheap petrol pipes do with modern fuel. Even so I'd rather see the rubber pipe and be... MORE
Martyn... Firstly, check the oil level in the carbs and further, is it "thin" 10 wt or the thicker 20 wt. stuff? Secondly, when it "stumbles" off-idle upon initial acceleration...is there smoke of any sort out the exhaust before it finally "catches" and "go's"? Thirdly...check the timing. For a "stumble" upon initial acceleration is not an unknown symptom of too much initial ignition advance. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 31417... MORE
Terry I think it is a 3 into one tubular manifold you are thinking of, this is the usual tuning mod on a Spridget exhaust, and yes I have a spare one on my project car. The project is a 1098 however I believe the Manifolds are identical to the 1275. I am in Peterborough Cambridgeshire and would be happy to do a straight swap (assuming your cast manifold is in reasonable condition) since I am going for originality on the rebuild. Contact me off list but put Midget in the subject in upper case so I can spot... MORE
There you go, James. Blue toward orange if you're gonna "drive it like you stole it" and just blue (in the middle) for "normal" daily driving. The Colortune does not lie...it's an excellent little device. "Emissions"....you are correct in your assessment, sir. These are "early emissions" cars....like the "non-emissions" cars that preceeded these, even at the latter setting, the exhaust will smell of unburnt CO and hydrocarbons to one extent or another... it is as it should be and proves the basis for modern emissions laws and applications (catalytic converters and the like). (Your Spridget now smells good, like... MORE
Thanks for your replies After a bit of fiddling with the colortune the problem is now nearly sorted. The rear carb is running a bit rich, but not so bad as to start tinkering. Its mostly dark blue with a bit of yellow. The front carb was running pretty weak and took about 6 clicks to get it a darker shade of blue and is now about as right as I can make it. I've just taken it for another test run and is a lot better althought the exhaust is beginning to smell like it's running rich again!... MORE
Hi all As discussed in the previous thread my 1500 is totally standard bar the K&N filter, which was fitted and set up by the MGOC on their rolling road. However it has always been a bit hesitant, especially pulling away from cold. I also noticed it yesterday when it was fully warmed up and I was driving along at about 40.Ipressed the pedal down to accelerate and there was a definate hesitation, almost like turbo lag. Naturally I checked under the bonnet to see if some wag had fitted a turbo, but alas not! When I bought the... MORE
if you fit a *four* branch exhaust, that would be a seriously modified 1275 motor! ;-) Regards David "David Jacobs" 31366... MORE
Terry, ask them! When I was insured through MGOC (Lancaster Ins.) for my 1500, I put in a fast road cam, LCB exhaust, overdrive gearbox and oil cooler. I notified them and they said it made no difference to the premium. Guy "Guy Weller" 31365... MORE
I insure my midget through the MGOC. If I fit a 4 branch exhaust and K&N airfilter does it put up the premium? How much have I got to give for one of these for a 1275 cc 1972 Midget. Anyone got one going in the South East, if so I might just take a run out for it? Thanks Terry "terry.isherwood" 31363... MORE
Hi Terry So what you are talking about fitting is basically a stage 1 tuning kit. My Mini has a stage 1 kit fitted, but it really hasn't made much difference to the insurance premium. About =A310 more per annum or something silly like that. If you do the conversion make sure that you get the right carb needles as well, otherwise it will run horribly rich. Ideally these things need to be set up on a rolling road.............. There are 2 types of K&N filters for the 1275 cars, either 2 separate pancake filters or the deep combined... MORE
Just got a new convertible top for the 73 B. It went on MUCH easier than on the Midget, though I am not sure how to tuck the edges around the header rail. There is a little flap that folded out from under the top, and a multi-ply flap that is on the same section as the "window fly". I'm not quite sure how all that gets tucked in, and the old top was too rotted to tell for sure. Can someone take a picture of the edge of the header rail, where that little plastic block with the... Hi Ben Converting the head by fitting hardened valve seats is the only proper answer. I take the view that the worst that can happen by using unleaded is a valve buring out, in which case all that needs to be done is to have the hardened seats fitted at that point(and a new valve of course!) The additives are bad news as not only are they expensive but if the car is not used regularly it can form a gunge in the tank and clog up fuel pipes and jets etc. LRP hasn't been available where I live... Hi, Ken... 1275's ran with no exhaust valve seals for better cooling (residual oiling) of the stems. Guess they figured the combustion gasses would be "outbound" in any case instead of "sucking" as in the case of the inlet valve. It would make sense to me to install the oil thrower concave side "in", convex side "out" but I haven't got the manual at hand and haven't built an engine in 20 years so I'll leave this one to another more "current" than I in this respect! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 31272... MORE
The gasket set for my 1275 Midget engine came with 4 rubber "boots" which are oil seals for the inlet valve stems. The set also included 5 (!) of the small o-rings which I thought were for teh earlier 1098 motors where they were used on inlet and exhaust. Shouldm I be installing 4 of these o-rings on my exhaust valves in addition to the 4 boots on the inlet guides? The manual is ambiguous. Also, the manual says to install the oil thrower in the timing chest concave side out - then shows a picture of it installed... MORE
The A series engine will sound very similar to an MGB if it is fitted with a Long Centre Branch manifold (header). All Bs were factory fitted with this style of exhaust I believe. "G & J Swann-Price" 31224... MORE
TJ enjoy it , the engine note is nicer than the A series in my opinion , especially if there's a hole in the exhaust Colour looks like Blaze to me ,same as my 72 MGBGT I restored then sold when the kids too big to fit. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the availability and price of spares / repro parts for these cars. better than a midget I think. alan "alan.east-jones" 31209... MORE
I don't think so, Tom. Considering what you paid, if it's in the decent mechanical shape claimed, I think you did OK for what you paid, personally. I owned a de-smogged '72 until a certain girl ran a Stop sign one night and her insurance co. put me into a new Fiat 1/9. Pull the head and shave it to bring the Comp. Ratio up to no more than 9.5-1, (mine was 10-1 but we had "manly" gas available at that time!:) and purchase a set of 1.75 HS4's suitably calibrated as in Stage 1 of the Special Tuning... MORE
Jim I'm not sure on this one, but as I've been reading the comments it suddenly came to me. I used to have a Ford Mondeo over here and I'm pretty sure you had to lift that to put it into reverse. Now, as I said, I may well be wrong, but that Mondeo box I think is the same basic 5 speed box as used in the Ford Sierra that preceeded it -and I'm pretty sure that Sierra box forms the basis of a lot of 5 speed conversions. But I was under the impression you'd need to... MORE
hi all, as for progress so far, i have got the head of and am going to check the valve seats as the exhaust ports are looking wet! and i am sure this shouldn't be the case! I should have striped the head down last time but i don't have a spring compressor usually borrow a M8s so will be doing that over the weekend. One question. Last week when i put the head back on i used a new HG i started the car twice there was a problem so thats why i have striped it down, is... MORE
Nope, don't think I have any extra's. My book and engine says that you should look for the carbs & intake manifold from a 65-66 MGB & GT. They & I am running a pair of HS4's and if you cut the manifold (the 65-66 MGB... is A 1798 CC) and slide it together, mine has piece of hose and two hose clamps in the middle, it works just great and you don't notice any thing out of line. If you get the manifold, you can use any pair of HS4's. Bolts are / \ or vise versa. Get... MORE
