Does anybody know about setting the (2) air screws on a Weber dcoe sidedraft carb on my '75 Midget 1500, it's running rich, i put in new plugs & wires, i aqquired the car with the carb. on it. the screws are 1 1/2 turn out. It has headers and has been de-smogged. It has a points distributer also. Also i took the spedo cable off because the neadle was 'hopping' and oiled it, now it doesn't work, any idea?? Thank you. G'day all The MGB heat shield will work, after you cut it in half, but it might not be easy to find one that the owner will part with. They might prefer to sell the manifold, carbies, heat shield etc as a complete unit. Mini Cooper S had 1.5" SUs as an option, and their heat shields were actually two pieces with a bridge joining them that also held the return springs. You could use the appropriate side of this set-up if only you could find them! I can only supply them new, as a pair, for around $35... MORE

There is a poly-block that goes between intake manifold and carb prior to the heat shield/carb. And I recall there was (asbestos-type) insulation on the shield of my PO'd MGA's. I do not recall this on my later post-60/70 Spridgets or MGB's. Not on my Frog restored by PO, either. Of course, any Home Despot will carry something which can be used along wit h modern adhesives that will do the trick. Or heat reflective paint/coating. Beyond higher engine compartment temps in warmer weather which translate into higher induction air temps and gener ally less peppy performance under these... MORE

The heat shields are just sheet metal with no insulation. They block some radiated heat from reaching the carbs, and also deflect hot air so they work okay. Certainly not a bad idea to insulate, though. Oh, the also keep leaking fuel from dripping directly on the hot exh manifold. "joe blxfstz" 37172... MORE

Dave Fitted the exhaust manifold but it is hard up against the chassis rail, will show you. I am convinced the engine runs easier and purrs along smoother. I was going to put K&N air filters on, I wanted the one that spans the two carbs as I like the look of it but an owner I met at a show said they just made it noisier and no better so he reverted to the original ones but kept the sports manifold. You can have a look at my steering wheel problem and anyone got an oil cooler for... MORE

Terry Hope you can make it since it will be a great day with even more cars than last year, also Stondon is a great venue (take a look at their web site for details and directions. DON'T TAKE ANY NOTICE OF THE WEATHER FORECAST THE SU ALWAYS SHINES ON OUR EVENTS. My reg is GFR 882D and it will probably be parked under the gazebo. How did you get on with the sports manifold, did it fit OK in the end and has it made a noticeable improvement? Best regards and see you on Sunday Dave "David Dixon"... MORE

OK.... colour, labour, humour, Frogeye and now, "exhaust manifolds". Got it.... know what a "pumpkin" is in USA mechanical slang, Alan?? Guess! (1st two guesses don't count:). Cap'n Bob '6- :{) "Robert E. Shlafer" 37065... MORE

Rob : My headers (puttin in a V8) are custom made, actually a set of Chevy small block pick-up headers cut up with new Buick flanges, custom collectors with mandrel bent tubes. They are actually turning out better than I expected. My next question is the front valance structure, I basically need to remove everything but the lower front exterior valance sheet metal, does anyone have photos of any Midgets that this has been done to? I'll need to build a new tube structure to hold the new radiator, etc. I don't really want to use hood pins, so... MORE

Robbie.... I don't think the two are related. I think your motor has a case of "blow b y" of combustion gasses past the rings into the crankcase. I am not sure what emissions equipment you still have on your motor and do not "know" much about 1500's at all but, the feed from the charcoal cannister to the valve cover is intake air into the crankcase through a "graduated orifice" which normally works together with the "exhau st" side of this equation which feeds a graduated amount of crankcase gasses to the combustion chamber through a PCV valve... Rick, FWIW: I own a 75 and one of my early moves was to lose front and rear bumpers (someone actually paid me for them) as I hate the damn things. I had them sawn off at a body shop flush with the front valence(?) and have an earlier grill mounted. My header clears the sides of the engine bay with no problem though it is a little close below where the collector gets taken through 90 dgs. to go under the car. Wha' kine hedda ya got? I thought you might like to see these stats about dragsters. It is surprising and amazing. Bob Dragsters..... Cool info about dragsters.......... * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of race cars at the Daytona 500. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1=BD gallons of nitromethane per second. * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to even drive the dragster supercharger. * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a... Guys - Has anyone out there successfully removed the added frame rails on a later MG Midget, the ones that run from the firewall through the engine compartment, out the grill opening to support the those fugly rubber bumpers? Running out of room for my headers and was wondering what lies underneath them if I removed them entirely, or if it will affect the strength of the body much. Was going to cut them back to put a standard type of grill in it and need to notch a large portion of them out for the headers anyway...... Later... MORE

or if you prefer, "headers" G'day all Please forgive me for this bit of advertising, but it might be to your benefit. I mailed a nice set of extractors to one of our friends in the US, only to discover that they don't fit left hand drive cars. This was a surprise as I have a set on my LHD race car, made by the same manufacturer. I guess they changed their pattern! Anyway, these extractors are now in the US, looking for a home on a right hand drive car. If you have a RHD car, you might... MORE

Robert, You are going to be sorry you asked. For other listers, log off if this is too boring and it has NO LBC. Back in '72 or so, I was taking a camping trip around the United States with my then wife and two kids, age 9 & 10. We were driving my white Chevy California hippie van with side pipes and big tires in the rear. My wife was a fashion model and I had long hair and a beard. We stopped in Sheffield Texas for gas and I tried to buy some beer. The old crone... MORE

Hello, Well it's a sad day I have to sell my Sprite. Life and school don't seem to agree with my little English car. Don't forget to check the cylinder head face is flat. Check the valve seats for pitting/burning. If they're not too bad, lightly grind the valves in, if it's really bad, consider getting the head converted to unleaded (something to think about anyway) Regarding the choke cable, if you're not messing about with the carbs, other than taking them off the head, leave them on the manifold with the cables connected. Other than that, get some small spanners! If you can't find any to buy, get a cheapo one and modify it to fit. Heat it up and hammer it... MORE

Gavin... I know little about 1500's and nothing about European spec types however, I 'd not be driving the car with a fuel leak in the engine compartment. Not as bad as a Series A wherein the exhaust/carbs reside on the same side of the engine nor a situation wherein the higher pressures of fuel injection may be involved but....not a good idea nontheless. Pick up from your supplier an SU carb overhaul kit. This will contain the n ew gaskets/seals you no doubt will need to put a stop to the fuel leak, assuming it is from the... MORE

I misunderstood. I thought you said it misfires above 2800, when what you actually said is that it misfires AT 2800, but is okay above and below. I'm pretty sure this is a carburation problem wherein at a certain rpm there is a strange harmonic set up in the intake manifold and carburetor, which causes erratic, uncontolled movement of the air piston. Try this: Remove the old oil from the piston damper. To do this you'll have to remove the cap and the screws which hold the cover in place. Then remove the piston and it's diaphragm. Be careful,... Rick, When I went to install the Frontline tube shock conversion, I had to totally re-pipe the front brake lines from the MC to the calipers. (Frontline forgets to mention that small detail.) So I figured while I was at it, I would put in the LL. I do expect to run at the drags eventually and use it. It's good for laughs now - a couple of years ago at the Syracuse Nationals, Third Rail was a big crowd pleaser in an impromtu burnout contest in one of the hotel parking lots. Wheels - no, I have 14... MORE

Rick, My V6 is a GM crate motor sold for replacement of the Chevy S10 2.8L V6. It is rated at 160 hp if the stock S10 2bbl intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds were bolted back on it. With my headers and Holley/Offy intake system, I would guess mines's up toward 190 or so, but I have no dyno data. This month I am planning to install a set of Crane roller rockers, so that sould push it up over 200hp. My traction sucks. The 185s I have don't hook up. The only time they did when I... MORE

This is my first posting here and it is just a quick note to introduce myself. Rick, On my Sprite, I run 2" pipes from my header collectors back to oval Flowmaster mufflers. They are pulled up hard against the floorboards with a quadruple layer of fiberglass/foli insulation. My floorboards do not get hot. The fuel and brake lines and the battery cable nearby are heavily insulated and I've had no problem with those either. Oh, and the exhaust sounds tolerably quiet at low loads and idle, but nasty when on it. My ground clearance is about 3" at the low spots on the collectors and mufflers. I have 24 ga. stainless steel skid skins... MORE

Rick, I put on a glass pack for a Camaro on my 1500 (stock motor). It;s a 2 inch pipe and gives the little beast a snarly AND deep note. A little loud but not enough to do anything about. Best part was the $28 buck it cost. Though much longer it fit nicely where the stock resonator went so the system goes straight out on the Drivers side. Was also able to use the stock hanger points. Rick, The clearance depends on how low your car is and how stiff it is. The closer to the pan the pipe is, the more important a heat shield would be. Especially where your feet are. In extreme cases, I have heard of doing the math and figuring out the area of a 2 inch pipe, then getting tubing of the same area, like 1 inch by 3 inches (or what ever is the same area) and that gives you an extra inch of ground clearance. Should work fine, just make up a square to round adaptor to attach... MORE
