Congrats, James! Rain has stopped here and I am about to take the BE out as the sun comes out... I know "that feeling" you are feeling! No way around taking everything out with respect to the oil leak, eh? The 1380 is a pretty potent unit and if it's new, rings probably haven't really seated fully yet so crankcase pressure would be maybe temporarily on the high side? Sure the crankcase is either well vented or the PCV system (either way) is functioning properly...I mean I hate to see 'ya pull the whole shebang apart again (though not... MORE
Hey Lists!! Drove my Bugeye around the neighborhood yesterday! First time since I bought the disassembled body & boxes of parts 3 1/2 years ago; first time Bugeye has been on road since 1973 (multiple POs). 1380 with headers & Maniflow exhaust - sounds gooood!. It was GREAT! Oh, sure - leaks oil from rear seal area, brakes need to be bled more, speedo didn't work .... But It Ran! In case you didn't notice - I'm just a little enthused, excited, stoked, ... Well, back to fixing problems. Really looking forward (not) to pulling engine/trans to fix oil... MORE
I've only owned one later model Midget; the rest have been older Sprites. But, I had the same noise and while the fuel pump was indeed getting noisey with age, I agree with Paul that you should check your exhaust clearances. The frame rail can resonate like a drum when the exhaust is not quite as tight as it should be and the pipes make contact with the car. But you said that it happens as soon as you unlock the ignition ? Wait until the pilot bearing starts going out... that's a noise that will really confound you.... MORE

Kevin.... With respect to the picture of the crankcase ventilation system at the carbs.....the system does not appear to be "pinched off" from what I THINK I see. The large hose from the front cannister on the timing chain cover appears to be clamped to a non-stock "Tee" fitting from which smaller hoses are clamped that run to the crankcase emissions breather ports on each carb. Perfectly normal set-up assuming these hoses are not clogged. Take the hose off at the cannister, clean the end and blow through it. With some restriction (the "exhaust holes" in the carbs are... Hello all, Well, I fired her back up today. Put my hand over the oil filler hole, and let it idle. There was no significant vaccuum and no significant air pressure. The valve cover filled about an inch and a half full of oil, with oil coming up the push rod tubes. I'm sure it would have kept going , but I shut it down. As I mentioned earlier, it sounds fine once it gets warmed up. It isn't missing and has good oil pressure. (although the oil gauge doesn't work (Problem #312 of 1067...get to that one later...)... MORE
Well Don May.... The crankcase takes incoming air from the charcoal cannister through a "graduated orifice" feed tube mounted on the valve cover, assuming the valve cover has a non-vented oil filler cap. The "exhaust" side would be the hose coming from the cannister on the timing case cover which vents into the intake system via individual hoses which feed a "graduated orifice" within each carburator. In this instance, while the engine is running, Kevin removed the oil filler cap and noticed no vacuum or pressure. So even though Kevin states the individual hoses to each carb appear pinched,... Martyn.... BTDT. You poor ba$ta-d....and I speak from experience. What we did was pull the tank, pull the sender, find youthful human being with really thin arms (my mechanic's 16 year old was on hand, thank God) and get in there with a long needle nose pliers (or whatever) and wrench the clogged up filter netting right off the steel fuel feed line. This will take a lot of patience to finally get a grip on the stupid thing to the extent you have the leverage to disloge it from it's pipe, unless you get lucky...which I hope you... MORE
Everything is ready to start the engine but no fuel! Arrgh! I must have screwed up when I sealed my tank! I must have sealed the outlet pipe shut. I remember someone having done the same and fixed it. I don't remember what the fix was, must be old age! I've tried poking a piece of 1/8 inch wire down the fitting but not sure if I've reached the offending blockage. Thanks for the help. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 25433... MORE
Check to see if the hose from the top of the oil separator canister on front of the timing chain cover to the carburetors is clogged up and if the two small inlet pipes where the hoses connect at the carburetors are not clogged up. Spray a little carburetor cleaner in them. Don "Don May" 25419... MORE
Hello, I recently purchased a 1974 MG Midget. I had a mechanic (not especially knowledgable with British cars) go over the entire thing and get it road worthy as it was parked for a long time. I put about 50 miles on it in August, and suddenly I have oil pushing up through the oil cap. It leaks all over the head and then gets on the manifold and burns. THis all happens after about 1 minute of idling. I drained the oil, thinking that it was overfilled, but it only had just over 2 litres in it. (Capacity... MORE
"the 45 has always had a flat spot" Well, a "tendency" toward this for sure, though. Not mine! :) It came with the Weber 6" long intake manifold to begin with, and the length of the intake manifold makes all sorts of difference to the whole application in all sorts of ways. Generally speaking, longer is better for the low end. It also came with the smaller 3.5 aux. venturi's unlike some other kits which come with larger 4.5's, the smaller aux. venturi allowing earlier commencement of flow from the main system during acceleration, thus shortening the period of... Well it's about time. My 71 MG is back and refurbed. While it was apart for a new clutch disc, why not put a Datsun 5 speed in it? 266 cam, lite lifters, right springs, new shells on the still-standard crank, Cooper S 163 head with rimflows and ported, 45DCOE, and LCB, with a Kenlowe to cut cooling losses. Cooper S dizzy. I want a merit badge for making the Rivergate kit work. It is not easy for one who must follow directions literally. Much more difficult than it needs to be, for me, anyway. I know many listers... MORE
It seems that nobody will tell you that the problem is caused by the driver's weight (|), and 40 years of sag. Anytime the sprite is driven, it has a driver. How often does it also have a passenger, ie; weight on the drivers side and nothing to counter-balance the car. I agree with the suggestion of reversing the springs fron the passenger side to the drivers side. That will even it out, in another 40 years. Lower the passenger side, I have enough problems with my MK I and clearance of the exhaust system without lowering it. The... MORE
I dont have the smog rules here in Nevada, how do I plug these holes? There are two threaded holes, where the smog equipment exits the exaust manifold. I have the mg79200 in the photos section. I (dont) want to use the J/B weld on this hole problem. Any help would be appreciated. My name is Bill. THANKS "ooohaynow1" 25303... MORE

CA Smog check exemptions: "Some vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check program All 30 and older model-year vehicles are exempt from all aspects of the Smog Check program, but owners of these vehicles are required by law to keep their emissions systems intact. Vehicles built in 1974 for the 1975 model-year are 1975 vehicles and must be tested accordingly. Additionally, vehicles with diesel engines, vehicles with two-cycle engines, vehicles with engines smaller than 50 cubic inches of displacement, electric vehicles, and motorcycles are exempt from the Smog Check program." However in practice vehicles over 30 years old are... MORE
"...it seems to be loose" Not uncommon, Kelly... Don't weld it, clamp it whatever you do, if such repair is appropriate. There is that bracket which goes laterally between the transmission and the pipe just forward of your seat. Not there? Have Meinecke or any decent muffler shop install "their version". Or, make one up...either way the system will need some "support".....there. Hope you are enjoying the car (at last!:). Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25280... MORE
Robbie, Widening the tunnel is nothing - it takes just a few minutes and makes no difference to the structural integrity of it. The replacement cross member can be bolted in place - which is exactly the same principle as used in the MGBs. It is even possible to reverse the changes if you needed to. Guy "Guy Weller" 25234... need to widen the tunnel by about 1". Easy with a scissor jack. need to cut out the cross member and replace with a similar steel box section immediately below the floor pan, either welded or bolted in place. A quick and easy modification. Guy "Guy Weller" 25232... MORE
How loud is it? Without further info. it is difficult ot tell, but it might be worth checking the exhaust pipe run, including brackets, because in my experience this is something non-spridget people often get wrong. R. "Roger Stinson" 25221... MORE
Cap'n, This has come up before and the Spit OD will not fit without mods. The conversion I saw widened the Midget tunnel with a bottle jack to fit the OD unit. The conversion also welded in a support piece as I recall. This is one reason I'm reluctant to do this. I have zero welding skills and am somewhat dubious about stretching the drive tunnel that way. Well said, Don May... You hit the nail on the head..exactly spot on. This is the position I found myself in, more or less. Prior to knowing about the Datsun 5 speed, I attacked "the problem" by moving the whole rpm range upscale to 7-7.5k rpm by "Vizarding" a 1275 and making 4-4.5k rpm a comfortable cruising rpm. Supertuning the motor to take higher rpm is not inexpensive... for it's operating range is just short of a track motor.
