I've got to put a new clutch in my BE. Although the present one has done only 8000 miles, the center of the pressure plate has come loose (What do you call that part, the pressure pad?) Anyway, the question is this: I'm going to have to lift the engine (I'm leaving the tranny in the car), then roll the car out from under the engine. Any tips on supporting the tranny during this operation? I'm thinking about a temp support, maybe a piece of wood, screwed to the footwells. "joe blxfstz" 37246... MORE

The Organization Of Spridget Handymen in Transit got together yesterday to swap out Larry Macy's engine. Larry got a rebuilt (A wedding present? How thoughtful.) and it was about time to do the deed. Kevin and Rob Valentine, Phil Nase (?), Bill Gilroy and I showed up at Larry's. I understand that Frank Clarici had some problems on the way back from Carlisle so he couldn't make it. I'm sure Frank will fill us in. First we pulled the old engine and tranny, then Kevin and Larry timed the new cam and finished the reassembly. The rest of us... MORE

G'day all The MGB heat shield will work, after you cut it in half, but it might not be easy to find one that the owner will part with. They might prefer to sell the manifold, carbies, heat shield etc as a complete unit. Mini Cooper S had 1.5" SUs as an option, and their heat shields were actually two pieces with a bridge joining them that also held the return springs. You could use the appropriate side of this set-up if only you could find them! I can only supply them new, as a pair, for around $35... MORE

Wait until you get it apart before you make any decision. If you're lucky it may be just a clutch problem, like the center broke out of the disc. Or maybe the flywheel bolts sheared off; although it sounds like a broken trans input shaft, which isn't too terribly serious. You can rebuild yours, or possibly find a good used one for a few hundred dollars, plus $200 for a new clutch set and related parts. Or you can spend the big bucks for a Datsun 5- speed. If you go the Datsun route, be sure to get a... MORE

G'day Vern Your rear axle housing is moving fore and aft when you apply power and back off. If it's no longer at 90 degrees to the axis of the car, it will steer the car to the left or to the right. Look for: * broken spring * worn spring mount bushes at either end * worn spring pads where the axle attaches to the springs * worn trailing arm bushes if you have a quater-elliptically sprung car. They are all fairly cheap and simple to replace. avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 37125... MORE

Jim, Wetting agents are used to relaxes the surface tension of the fluid, thus helping the cooling abilities.Redline oils make something called water wetter it works and its easy to come by, another trick is to put a TEASPOON of dish soap in with the coolant it does the same thing and it much cheaper. Try it! Chris "Chris Eastwood" 37101... MORE

I thought you might like to see these stats about dragsters. It is surprising and amazing. Bob Dragsters..... Cool info about dragsters.......... * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of race cars at the Daytona 500. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1=BD gallons of nitromethane per second. * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to even drive the dragster supercharger. * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a... For the imperial yard to metre conversion I always use the phrase, 'all the 3's - three foot three and a third' When said with an Irish accent it sounds wonderful(!) One version of why US fluid sizes are reputedly smaller have a historical connection in that barrels of spirits exported to the New Colonies from the Homeland were subject to a high rate of evaporation (theft by the sailors/carriers) and what on paper was a gallon of whisky leaving the UK ended up as a short measure when it arrived at the Colonies..... Thus the short measure was... MORE

I have the dual master cylinder and am ordering the parts. I have the 65 Midget MKIII. Do I get the parts for the 948 or the 1098? The VIN is GAN3l 36873 if that helps. "Ginger" 36941... MORE

You've gotta love this one.A 1973 Midget that has been in storage for 20 years. One bid already for $500. The storage guys are now selling it, and some of their priceless gems include: 1) It runs but obviously will need a tune up. As it that's all it will need! 2) We did not drive the car and there is no fluid in the hydraulic clutch, but we were told the transmission, and brakes are OK. So please explain how you verified these bits were OK. 3) The only rust is where I am pointing in the photos,... MORE

Hi Jeremy, Water flows from the block/thermostat housing to radiator top then cooler water returns to the water pump from the bottom of radiator. Thermostat should have the heat sensor/bellows toward the block. There may be a passel of other things that are wrong too. Such as radiator blocked with debris, return hose collapsing, heat gauge off calibration, vapor lock, fuel hoses partially blocked, the list goes on!! Don't run the car without a thermostat, either. May develop dangerous hot spots in the engine. Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 36888... MORE

Jim, Common theory is that you should turn on the valve and either run the water through the heater core, or use a short by pass hose and loop the water back into the engine. That will insure better cooling for the number 4 cylinder which I hear can be a problem. Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 36879... MORE

Hi all, Another new member here, but I already have one post to my name concerning a good spot to sell my Midget (we like to callher Prudence). Well, I've tried the eBay route to no avail and also Craiglist here in the bay area, so I thought I would try here on the board. Anyway, Prudence has a new top, and the seats have been redone. She needs brake work and the dash is cracked in the middle, but she runs really well. If anyone know of an aspiring Midget owner, send them my way at my yahoo... MORE

Rick, When I went to install the Frontline tube shock conversion, I had to totally re-pipe the front brake lines from the MC to the calipers. (Frontline forgets to mention that small detail.) So I figured while I was at it, I would put in the LL. I do expect to run at the drags eventually and use it. It's good for laughs now - a couple of years ago at the Syracuse Nationals, Third Rail was a big crowd pleaser in an impromtu burnout contest in one of the hotel parking lots. Wheels - no, I have 14... MORE

Rick, On my Sprite, I run 2" pipes from my header collectors back to oval Flowmaster mufflers. They are pulled up hard against the floorboards with a quadruple layer of fiberglass/foli insulation. My floorboards do not get hot. The fuel and brake lines and the battery cable nearby are heavily insulated and I've had no problem with those either. Oh, and the exhaust sounds tolerably quiet at low loads and idle, but nasty when on it. My ground clearance is about 3" at the low spots on the collectors and mufflers. I have 24 ga. stainless steel skid skins... MORE

The last sets of brake and clutch pedal pads I've bought have been really crappy, and fell apart within a few thousand miles. I know these have never been much good, but they seem worse lately. Are there some which are better than others? How do you know? Who sells good ones? "joe blxfstz" 36772... MORE

"It just might roll down the driveway" Geeze....BFD....like this is rocket science or something...yeh, right. It didn't roll yesterday when I set the "rollers" on my 1.5 set-up and hasn't in 42 years so I sorta doubt it, most especially since parking brakes and wheel chocks were "invented". Unless you got a clutch fan, do it my way and you won't need a chock anyway. Just leave it in neutr al and set the parking brake....OK!! If it makes you feel better, put a chock(s) under a wheel....or dead cat(s)! Now, take the damn plugs out so the engine... MORE

Terry, the hoses go in place of the rigid pipe from the block to the filter head and the cooler itself usually goes in the nosecone in front of the radiator. For remote filter units, look at MGB V8 conversions (and factory V8s) as they use them - absolutely no room for an engine mounted filter there. David "David Jacobs" 36635... MORE

David I did measure it and it was not that easy to be exact but it was going to be tight or not go. Will try for a conventional oil cooler. Does it go in place of the pipe from the block (banjo fitting) to the top of the oil filter screw on bit? Mind you I do like the idea of a remote oil filter, perhaps I could put it where I can easily get to it.where can I get details, looked on MGOC but did not see it. terry Terry Isherwood Essex UK "Terry Isherwood" 36634... Hi Folks, Recently my uncle passed away and I now am suddenly becoming more involved with the family farm, he was running it up until now. First thing is the barns need a massive cleanout. Neither my dad or my uncle ever threw anything away. Me either for that matter. I was there today working and I found a small stash of Spridget parts there I forgot I had. Main thing is a whole 1/4 elliptic rearend drum to drum with 4.22 gears. Springs are cut, but everything else is there. I also saw a heater blower and a... MORE
