Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The bearing nut yielded to a pipe wrench with an 18 inch pipe handle extension. So much for the left side. Now its back to the right side and an uncooperative brake drum. One of the retaining screws came out easily but the second one has thus far resisted my efforts. In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
If the switch is in fact dead (it's a normally closed switch), then you need to unbolt the pedal box enough to rotate the switch out after disconnecting the wires. Gerard "gerardchateau" 32406... MORE
Finally got a chance to follow the wires for the non working brake lights. The stoplight switch doesn't complete the circuit and light the brake lights, they do work when I use a jumper wire and short across the switch. It is located on the end of the MC housing inside the engine compartment. Anyone know the tricks to replacing the switch? TIA Neil "Neil Hernan" 32401... MORE
David, I think you stated it backwards. Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover. Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32399... MORE

Be careful! If you cause oil to leak out the rear of the crank, you may well oil your clutch, and it's an engine out job to replace the disc! "joe blxfstz" 32335... MORE
Wow! This is a great list:) Thanks to everyone who wrote with information, help and great advice. I didn't know about Moss, so this will help a lot. My husband is putting new tires on my "baby" as I'm typing this...so he'll be addressing the brake issue while he's in there. I hadn't even thought about cutting down regular U.S. sized wipers...it's a great idea and will work well until I can get the right ones. Hello All. I live in Cheshire, Oregon USA and I'm the new owner of a very nice 1979 MG Midget:) I just bought it this past weekend and I can't wait to play with it. It has a couple of problems that need to be addressed before I can really drive it, one of which is a throttle that keeps sticking wide open. The other is bad brakes;) This combination of issues makes me a bit nervous! It desperately needs windshield wipers and I am having difficulty finding the little 9" wipers that are on it now. I am in the middle of changing the front suspension on the 68. I am catching my breath, and allowing the spring pans and disc brake backers to dry from being coated with fresh paint. Thank you to Peter for the new shocks, I will have the cores on their way to you this week. Btw, I was missing the bolt on the right shock that keeps the trunion bolt from turning, I hope this isn't a big issue. Just Ed, the parts are great, everything is going on fine!!! Hi Pete, Glad to know you are a satisfied with what I did for you. This is the only way to do it, (even if I didn't do it for you). There is no question that your MC is WAY better than even a new one. Joe tells me that many people send him BRAND NEW MC's to be sleeved. I can tell you from the many I have done that this is the only way to go. Also, as you found out by closer examination of what you had, amateurs trying to rebuild this particular MC do more... MORE
Hi All I am going to try to rebuild the master cylinder in my 79 midget this weak end I have the rebuild kit and the hone. I have never done one of these befor. Does any one have any tips tricks or helpfull hints. I have replaced all lines both calipers all rear barke parts wheel cylinders also. And my brake pedal still gets rock hard and front brakes drag. The thing is I drive it the first time it gets hard.I let it set for about 15 mins. and the presure lets up and I can drive... MORE

Hi Alan I never could drive my midget with work boots on! Not enough room between the pedals. Makes Heel & Toeing difficult too! Relationships can last ...... My midget has been around for over 25 years (nearer 40 really but I don't like to admit to that!) MR 2 looks interesting too. I will be interested to know how you get on. Yeah. Im going to have to find some other type of shoes to wear strictly for driving my Midget. My MR2 has come along way since those pics. 90% of the car has been painted now. All thats is left to paint is the aftermarket front and rear airdam and then reassembly. If you look at the third pic youll see that Iv put a driver side air vent. The first gen MR2s only had it on the right side. Iv also relocated the gas filler to the B pillar of both sides of the car and installed Datsun... MORE
There is another possibility - do you have a brake servo fitted? With some types, if this is faulty, it's possible to suck brake fluid into the inlet manifold - I think that can burn grey/white. David "David Jacobs" 32096... MORE
Thanks to all who replied on my strait cut gear box being very noisy in the first three gears. Very relieved to hear that is normal. Saved me a lot of worry, thought my season was over before it started. Tyre type e.g. radial V crossply and tread pattern also make a big difference,to rolling resistance. As well as tyre contact area and the height / stiffness that the tyre walls have to deflect / squish when rolling. Alan PS The diff and drive train even when not in gear will make difference FWD car V RWD car. As well as dragging brakes at front and rear for whatever the reason.
