wfo yes it has good suspension ,i got the springs, brakes, swaybar, and urathane bushins from moss motor. the car set about a 1/2 inch of the ground. for the rear im using a rear from a s-10 2.43 gears, and one set up with3.73 gears. i have takin the car out to the drags it did a 13 flat at 113 mph spinning the tires down the track with the 2.43 gears. as for the conversion i didnt do it but the guy that did said it was simple. i bought the car from my old boss who... I own a 1971 mg midget. I am having diffuculty getting the clutch to work and I suspect that it is due to the fact that I joined two 1/4" double flare lines together with a union, a male to male adapter, a junction whatever you want to call it and this joint leaks. it was not a splice by any means. I did not cut the lines at any time. Clutch fluid can be seen and felt around the joint once the pedal is depressed no matter how well it is wiped off before hand. There is no... MORE
Well I just went and looked at mine and it appears to have the same, double or single flare connections or the slave cylinder and the clutch master. I assumed it was bubble the same as the brakes. Glad to hear you have her running again!. 2 thoughts on the clutch...from a fellow 1500 owner: 1) is the clutch plate installed the correct way (there is a stamping that says "this side to engine" or something. It will fit facing either way, but will only truly work when facing the correct way. A local shop did this one to me a while back. 2) On my Midget, there was no obvious sign of an air pocket (clutch hose is semi-transparent), but both slave & master were replaced. Spent yesterday squeek and rattle testing in the feild, My 1500 Midegt has now put another 2 miles on its odometer (first movement it has seen in 16 years).. Found a loose shock boly, a loose wheel bearing and that I had only started the fuel pipe union into the tank and not done it up.. once it was all done it drove reaonably well.. apart form one thing, the clutch is still not working properly.. If you hold it down in 1st, the car gradually creeps off, my suspision is it fluid is leaking past the seals back... MORE
I think GTX is Castrol's motor oil. If you use Castrol brake fluid, it is LMA. Assuming your brake hydraulics have been rebuilt since the car left the factory, any brand DOT 3 will be fine. I have a friend who makes his living restoring british cars, and he always uses the cheapest DOT 3 he can buy. Never had a problem. "joe blxfstz" 36331... MORE
One foreign parts store told me Castrol Dot 3. Another foreign parts store said Castrol GTX(exceeds Dot 3). They said the GTX was a low moisture absorbtion (lma) fluid since the brake and clutch used natural rubber, not synthetic rubber like american cars. Question-will any dot 3 or dot 4 fluid do fine? Adam Do you mean the threads on the master cylinder or the threads on the brass connector. The threads on the connector actually looked like they weren't in great condition, but it never leaked there before, so I just screwed them back in. Do you know if the teflon tape will disintegrate over time from contact with the brake fluid?\ Bob rlirwn@... 36323... MORE
I put a little bit of Teflon tape (like you use on gas & water pipes) on the brake line threads. Be careful not to do too much, because you do not want a pice of tape floating through your brake system. I have had no leaks yet in my system, pipe-wise. I got my resleeved master and clutch slave cylinders for my bugeye back from Whitepost and installed them. When I started to bleed the brakes more fluid came out around the brake line attachment point than came out of the bleeder at the rear brake. I didn't replace all the brake lines and would really prefer not to do that. When I installed the lines I just screwed them into the master cylinder (after cleaning them first with clean brake fluid and drying them). Is there something else that I should have done? Greetings: I have a 1960 Bugeye Sprite which I recently purchased and am going through to make sure everything's up to snuff. Of note is that it has wire knockoff wheels. I took off the rear tires and brake drum to find that oil had leaked into the drums, contaminating the shoes and necessitating their replacement. While the hub has been off, I went ahead and replaced the bearing and I'm just about to the point of buttoning everything back up. I got a new o-ring and paper gasket for the hub as well. I would like to relocate the windshield wiper motor on my 73 midget. It's on the left inner fender right now. I notice from pictures on Ed's web site that BE wiper motors are up next to the pedal box. Can I use a different cable and re-locate my motor? Anyone tried this? Greetings: I recently purchased a 1960 Bugeye Sprite, and I'm having quite a time figuring out what prior owners did to it. Case in point: On the front timing cover is a canister looking apparatus with one single rubber hose coming out of it. On my car, the hose goes nowhere. What is this thing? IMHO, this is not a good idea. There are some things that a "Shade Tree Mechanic" can do, after all, I are one, but there are some parts to the LBC that might be better left to a "British Car Mechanic." As far as your list, Wouldn't a simple "I'll pay you $50-$100, you look it over, turn it over, try to start it, check brakes, etc, and 1. tell me what you think, and 2. give me an estimate as to what you think it needs, what the parts and labor to do will be, and if agreed... I recognize this is one of those thological deputes that have been debated for years, like wht fluid shouold I use in my dashpots, 20 weight or atf. The fact is that my engine is still within the tolerences specified in the haynes manual. That is it is only .001 larger than stock. This being teh case there is a slight ridge at athe top that needed to be taken off to safely remove the pistons. Plus, how is it that a re ring and hone job would be any shorter lived than a re bore which would necessitate,... MORE
A new one might last abt 20 years if you keep the fluid fresh. A sleeved one will likely last longer, so the answer to the question is: "How old are you?" If you're past 60, as some of us are, go with the new one.:-) "joe blxfstz" 36145... MORE
Well.... the brass sleeved cylinders seem to last a lot longer, most especially in cars that "sit" and are little used. :) Cap'n Bob '60 Frog PS...speaking of slave cylinders...as in clutch slave cylinders. Rivergate is producing their new 7/8" clutch slave cylinder. 79 Midget, quick question: Does anyone know the type of fitting that goes into the back of the master and slave cylinder? Back story: Car was running great, shifting just fine, 68k on the odo, One day clutch goes almost to the floor, next day it goes right to the floor, no pressure at all. topped off Master cylinder, press pedal, fluid goes all over bellhousing and tranny. Bummer. Moss wants $50 for a replacement hose, but I work at a place with a large selection of hoses, fittings, etc. Are the fittings Flared, or some mutant British type?... MORE
The Twinni came about because one of the reasons given for the rejection of the Moke was the lack of 4 wheel drive, so Issigonis thought he would fix this by adding another engine/suframe assembly at the rear. Then John Copper saw it and realised there was no reason they could not do this with a mini.. IIRC there were about 2 or 3 Moke Twinnis, and one Cooper S version (this being the one that snapped a track rod at some silly speed causing John to loose control of the car and thus destroying it and nearly himself...
