I'm upgrading my early model .875" bore master cylinder to the later model with the .75" bore and I'm getting it brass sleeved by Joe at Sierra Specialty Auto too, but I have a problem. The plastic internal bits from the .75" MC came out in pieces=85 and I don't see replacements in the VB catalog. Is there an alternate source for these plastic bits, and are they specific to either the clutch or brake side=85 or are both bore assemblies the same? Any suggestions? Cheers & TIA, -Drew "Drew Griffith" 32837... MORE
I think they run directly on the diaphragm spring fingers, with the thrust pad (existing trilobular reaction plate) removed. If you have a larger competition clutch, you might have problems with the finger spacing, though. I'm getting ready to rebuild my 79's MC, as it keeps dripping brake fluid on my foot. Any special words of advice from someone who's done it? Are there any things I should be especially aware of, or any special precautions to take? Thanks in advance, George "chuibuddy" 32784... MORE

Mike, Let me start by saying if there are no leaks and the fluid level in the MC dosen't drop, I would suspect your MC. That said, does your brake warning light come on when you turn the ignition on? If it dosen't then the switch is centered. When either the right or left brakes fail the internal shuttle is push to one side or the other to seal off the side which has lost pressure and when it does it activates the switch and the dash light comes on. If your light is on after bleeding the brakes... MORE
Air in the line will only give you a soft or spongy petal, not a loss of brakes. Loss of brakes would be caused by a leak, either a wheel cylinder or a brake switch, which would have fluid all over, or a master cylinder, which can have fluid all over or it might leak back into the reservoir, which you wouldn't see any fluid. You say that you rebuilt the master, but don't mention the wheel cylinders. Brake fluid eats rubber parts. I would suggest rebuilding, or at least inspecting the wheel cylinders. Check for leaks, and check... MORE
Hi all Looking for some advise. Have a '79 Stock Midget with dual line brake system. Have done work to it in the past year including: Rebuilt master, new rubber hoses all around, good linings, adjusted with nice firm pedal, NO leaks. Brakes seem fine then suddenly pedal goes to the floor with no brakes at all. This happened a few months back so I rebled the system and we have started to drive the car on a more regular basis now. Drove car about 100 mi before it happened. Pedal comes back up to normal with 1 or... MORE
Intelligence Riddle George W. Bush meets with the Queen. He asks her, "Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give to me?" "Well," says the Queen, "the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people." Bush frowns. "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?" The Queen takes a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy. You just ask them to answer an intelligence riddle." The Queen pushes a button on her intercom. "Please send Tony Blair in here, would you?" I have a late model Midget, and haven't been able to locate a hot air hose (the hose that connects from under the manifold to the air temp control valve (refer to Haynes p 101, item #16). VB and Moss have them displayed, but not available for sale. Does anyone out there have one that they are willing to part with? Thanks, Pete "Pete Skalski" 32726... MORE
Don't get confused, Jens. The butterflies must fully open when the accelerater pedal goes fully down. This is mechanical matter. The pistons (air valves) must not reach their full upward travel prior to redline (or reasonably thereabouts). If they do, you require a stronger spring. Probably yellow is next. Aldon would know the different spring rates/colors. The weight of the oil determines the piston's rise RATE. The engine is being revved under no load circumstances. Thus, the butterflies will not require much opening in order to allow the motor to reach it's redline under this no-load condition. Cap'n. Bob... MORE
1. The shortly later models used a 3/4" dual master cylinder with disk brakes. Looks just like the Bugeye 7/8" but takes less pressure. 2. There is a mastercylinder cap? on ebay for the dual mastercylinder that is raised an holds more fluid than the flat cover??? 3. I'm not sure that they will let you race with a later mastercylinder/clutch cylinder system? I don't know, I'm "simi- stock". Bob, Troutdale, OR Capt'n Bob, Quite. "Robert Webb" 32710... MORE
Hi, Just ran my Bugeye in 4 Vintage races but fortunately blew a head gasket, cutting short my last race, because the master cylinder had suddenly lost about half its fluid in a few laps! Guess now is the time to upgrade to a dual circuit cylinder. What is the easiest route to do this? Any "how to" guides on the internet? There is a roll cage tube that goes quite close beside the "box" the master brake/clutch cylinder unit is in, so I don't have a lot of room for anything. Is there a later spridget dual brake/clutch... MORE
OH...and Jens...I forgot!!! Before you get started on a compression check, DO check the throttle cable hookup and be sure when you put the accelerator pedal fully to the floor the BUTTERFLY is FULLY open! :):) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 32706... MORE
Ah HAH.... You may have hit the nail right on the head here, Jens... "If (my engine...tuned or not) cannot SUCK (produce enough vacuum) to open a pair of HS2's....." EXACTLY!!!! It is time to "begin at the beginning", Jens. As in MAJOR tune-up. Step one is checking engine "mechanical health".... with valves properly adjusted...time for a basic compression & leakdown check. Considering recency of engine work, you're looking for 150 or better on compression check and leak-down rates of less than 10%. Remember to hold the butterflies fully open (accelerator pedal fully to the floor) during the compression... MORE
Decided to MOT the frogeye for one last summer before it gets the shell fully sorted. As it stands it needs a tyre, the horn fixing and the handbrake adjusting. Nothing really major. However the reason the handbrake needs adjusting is not because of wear in the system or a starched cable, but the bracket on the axle bends over time and needs knocking out with a hammer. This had to be done at the last MOT it had (1999). The bend occurs where the cable passes though the bracket, has anyone else had this problem and if so... MORE

What are the lengths of the two hoses that run between the oil cooler and the block/filter on a 73 Midget with a 1275? G'day Nelson Well I wouldn't go as far as Biff. Standard is 7" and with anything more than .060" oversize (1/16") you run out of rear brake adjustment WELL before the linings wear out. In Oz we can get oversize linings (thicker material on the shoe) that will allow us to go to about .080" oversize drums, but I know in some countries o/s linings are not available. Now you may think that the rear brakes don't do much anyway, so this isn't really a problem. But consider this. The front discs will only work when there is pressure... MORE
G'day back to you, Colin, I hadn't measured the drums when I posted the question. Today I got out the calipers and found that both drums are within ten thou of seven inches and with the light scoring they will only need a touch up. So I think I will keep the drums after they are skimmed but I will have to replace both of the wheel cylinders. This is going to be a newer old car than I anticipated. I guess I'm just learning what everyone else does in restoring these vehicles. Thanks for your interest, Nelson "Nelson... MORE
Nawww...I kinda like him;) I will order a new cable though...it's just odd that this one is short. Somebody must have messed with it at some point, because I doubt it was always this way. Hi All. We've been installing new brake shoes on my '79 Midget. When we got it all apart and cleaned everything up, we discovered that the cable for the hand brake system was "too short" and had been applying pressure to the right rear wheel. (Which is apparently what made that side wear so badly) We removed the cable and found that the plastic coating was badly deteriorated and broken, so we removed all of the plastic until we can get another cable. However, when we re-installed the cable, it was still too short. My husband thought that maybe... MORE
