George... I think you have three problems: 1.The intake manifold mounted PCV system uses the vented/filtered oil filler cap to provide for incoming air. 2. The most effective crankcase scavenging consists of a feed to the PCV valve from below the pistons. 3. The "cover" to the old mechanical fuel pump fitting on the forward left side of the block just above the flange can be used as a "source" for relieving lower crankcase vapor/pressure in place of the old takeoff on the stock timing case cover which no longer exists, in consideration of your new timing cover set-up... Don, My '72 has the same design tonneau snaps you describe. I can't comment on how standard this was, but certainly not unique to your situation. As far as stretching, I would consider finding a Black Magic brand vinyl "restorer" which will revitalize/moisterize the vinyl. Don't use ArmourAll as it actually dries it out. The Black Magic will will slippery and look shiny at first, but dried to a natural appearance once it soaks in.. I had an old convertible top that fits you description that suffered the same problem. I had success streching the vinyl, but getting it... MORE

Hi, Don.... Don't know about the snaps (which sounds definitely like a superior design) but yes, I would soak in warmish water completely, then attempt to install it, parking it in the shade or inside for a slow dry. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24274... MORE

My 1400cc engine which sat for a number of years after being built smokes. Between burning and leaking it goes through a quart every 200 miles or so. I've done a hot compression check and get 205, 210,210 and 210. (compression ration is 9.75:1). My thinking is that the problem is in the head, valve stem seals or guides, or with the rocker arm shaft, based on the consistent compression readings. I remember someone saying that even with good compression the problem could be bad oil control rings. Thoughts, comments, suggested diagnostic tests, would be appreciated. My Black Tulip 73 has a Tonneau cover that is in near mint condition . . . except . . . because it seems to have been seldom, if ever used has shrunk. Unlike some other Tonneau covers I have had the backing material on this one is very heavy duty canvas which is giving me trouble. Very good quality and construction. I have been successful in stretching the lighter canvas backed ones back to fit but this one even taking advantage of the hot weather we are having has resisted being stretched far enough, close but not there.... "108F" Now THAT is hot. Geeze man...I could take about 104 for about all of 30 minutes down there and that was about it....brutal! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 24261... MORE

Wow!! El warmo!! Let's see...that would be about 100F (which is warm enough, mind you!). In summer, it gets warmer in our Southern states such as Texas, where our fellow lister Brad Fornal is located. The American Airlines training center is located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and I've been down their when it gets to 104-106 on a sunny day during their hot spells. But I suspect you are correct, Nigel, in your assumption...really, for this truly "hot". I don't know how Heathrow authorities measure their temperature but I assume it is "free air". It would be warmer on... MORE

I don't know whether this is relevant or not, but It's another very hot day here today - mid 30's and walking back from the paper shop I noticed a Ford Ka leaking fuel from the filler area - it was clearly oozing out. So I guess if you've recently filled the tank up, the heat will cause the fuel to expand enough to start leaking. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 24236... MORE

I had some problems with my Bugeye about a year ago, turned out to be air leak at the fuel tank/line connection, but in checking, my coil was too hot to touch for more that a second or two. The other day i installed a Lucas sport coil and the Luminition super blue silicon leads to go with it in my 948 frog. However i noticed that this coil gets very hot, too hot to touch for very long. Is this normal and will it help to widen the plug gap a little as adviced by Luminition. Anybody experiance with this! Cheers jens Jens P. Maudal jens.maudal@... Well, Don May... I just had a fibreglass BE bonnet enter my life by coincidence. I just had my steel one overhauled in terms of new metal strips, etc. It's got cooling louvres (they work beautifully, BTW) and pretty soon will have a nice smooth finish between the grille and parking lights... no more "unsightly" horzontal seams!! :) Some guy refused a fibreglass one that just came in to S&C up the road from me so it became available. Might be a good time to convert over to save a little weight...give it a tilt front end treatment, etc.!... MORE

G'day Brad The valve stem diameters are the same. You can squeeze 1275cc valves into a 1098cc head (12G295) if you want to, but you will need to open the combustion chamber up quite a bit to allow gas flow around the valve, or you are defeating the purpose. Really no great advantage. 1275cc head will fit on 1098cc block, but if you have a high lift cam, and/or 1.5:1 rockers, the exhaust valves will hit the top of the block face. You will need to machine a crescent out of the block, up to .100" deep (I just... MORE

Well, Nigel... Your searching for something here but it's not about the 1500 or a correct way to modify or sort the handling on a car. With respect to the 1500, It's mostly all add-on stuff to the original type so the mfgs. could extend the life of the type while meeting later day safety standards. As such, all "earlier" prior specs and parts are available so it's not as though one is dealing with a new type. So, none of this is really rocket science as I am sure you know, though some bending here and there may... MORE

Cap'n Bob, Appreciate the insight. The last 1275 I drove was a 73 back in 1981. Didn't know jack about such cars so comparison's are impossible. I was planning to lower the rear of the car with a block arrangement that raises the rear axle where it attaches to the spring. Since fitting the new wheels and tires I'm not so sure about this. I had to do some sugery on the rear to eliminate the "tuck-in" flange for clearance. The front wheels were even worse. Had to raise the wheel cutout an inch. Will probably flair them. Do... MORE

We put the pan back onto the 1275, but cannot go further until I have the proper gaskets. I will not make them out of silicone!! So, in the interim, we took the 1098 apart. The problem we found, in the removing the frozen pistons, is that there are sleeves on the back two cylinders. One of the sleeves was moving when I was trying to pound the piston out. What holds the sleeve still? I want to build a motor for the Frogeye, to get it on the road, until the 1275 is built. I have two guys... MORE

Capt, I was going to send this directly to you, however, as usual you don't know when to shut your hole (your choice of which hole I'm speaking of). Well, Bill... As long as no cats have been injured, I remain on your side! :) Velcro closed "flaps" are the way to go around he roll bar. This is what I have and they work just fine in forming tight fit and keeping the water out. I have low backs (and always have) so I am of no use in the hi-back seat dept. Just got my repair manual. It is a big help. Checked the fluid levels in both the clutch and transmission. Topped them both off. No change. Bled the slave. It had air. No change. Clutch still isn't disengaging. That is about the extent of what I can do in my backyard and will be sending it to the doctor on Monday. Didn't see any place (in the manual) that indicated that the clutch can be adjusted. Didn't touch the turn signal. Thanks for the help. "Rick & Deb" 23934... MORE

Brad, Good luck on your first road test. I just got my 75 Midget running semi-properly this summer after 4 years of effort. I used the original clutch as it looked fairly recent but failed to consider the effect of time on the springs. Car runs fine but slips in higher gears when I put my foot down... MORE

I am looking at removing the air cleaner (and box) and the warm air tube from my '79 midget. I would like to replace with something a little sportier(?), like a K&N chrome round air cleaner. Since I don't have an air pump on the car, I assume the smog stuff doesn't work anyway. I only drive it in the summer, so the heat riser isn't doing much, that I can tell. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement air cleaner? "Michael " 23921... MORE

Hmm... I would look for a K&N filter to use within the air box and turn the box into a "cold air" box by running appropriately sized rubber tubing to it from an outside air source. Cooling of the induction air charge makes for HP!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 23923... MORE
