Hi All, As i slowly rebuild my 76 Midget, i have come across a slight dilema. I am about to put the Outer sill on to the car but when i line it up and clamp it in place the top of the outer and inner sills meet up perfectly but at the bottom the sills are apart by about 2 cm (3/4" in old money). It just does not seem right. Should they meet up at the bottom? When i removed the sill there was not this gap. I am unsure whether the previous owner had the sill... MORE
'cause it takes a little time for the oil leaking from the running motor to drip upon the clutch lining? Or is the clutch "slipping" very slightly and the lining getting hot accordingly after a little time driving? Smell anything burning? Dear Virgil and all, I have a block. I am not sure what it is but I am sure those on the list can tell me. It is very available in San Diego. Here is the hard part, get ready to laugh at me or yell names etc. It had been setting out in the rain for god knows how many years. There is surface rust inside and outside. You'll get a better job if you do the prep, at least to the point of removing all the trim, lights, windshield, etc. they're not going to do that; they just mask around, and you get a nicer job if the car is has everything reasonable removed. I think you'd be well advised to take the paint to them, along with the appropriate hardeners and reducers. Good paint is expensive, and may cost than the entire cost of a MAACO job. They should be able to do the rest of the prep, masking and spraying okay, but they're not... MORE
Affirmative, Clarance.... these are franchises, however. I might not trust them to do bodywork but their paintwork on my PO'd VW Bug and '74 Midget was excellent from the franchise I used in Stamford and later, Norwalk, CT. Closest one now is Bridgeport, CT and I will give them a shot after I do all the bodywork required, this coming summer. Because the Spridget is so small (and cool) they ususally go out of their way to do a very respectable paint job....at least, this has been my experience with MAACO so far. But I do all the prep.... Chuck...do not be mislead by compression ratios which could be had back when leaded ("manly") octanes were available . Today's unleaded "garbage" octanes require a little more thought in this di rection, assuming a cast iron head and the ignition advance curve you're probably working with, along with a "mild" cam with relatively little duration which will favor maximum "trapping" of the combustion gases in favor of the low end of the useable rpm spectrum (torque.. as in street application). With aluminum heads you can go about a point higher than with cast iron, all else being equal. Also,... MORE
Stephan, It could be slippage between the 2 halves of the crank pulley. There is a rubber insert between the 2 parts providing a damper for crank vibrations. It could be that this has deteriorated allowing the marks to shift in relation to the crank, whilst the timing remains the same. Guy "Guy Weller" 35695... MORE
Duncan, You are right - I didn't think of that! Since the valves appear to open at the right moment (1 or 2 deg off?) the chain should be OK. Then the question may be whether the pulley can somehow be rotated 15 deg? I have never taken it off, but looking into Haynes and Ball it looks like there is only one way to mount it? Anyone knows? Hello all: This Question is about my '68 Sprite "Rosa" - 1275cc Is it possible that the timing chain jumps a teeth on any of the sprockets when it gets worn? I have my engine out of the car for an unrelated issue (replaced the starter ring gear =96 different story) and noticed that the notch in the crankshaft pulley is about 15 deg past the TDC mark when the nr. 1 piston is at TDC. I checked the posiiton of the nr. 1 piston visualy through the spark hole, and by using a wire and am quite sure... MORE
Sure a cold box is worth fitting, Jens. Not a new car out there that hasn't got one. Jacques LaClainche's website shows his BE with a cold air box. Looks like a sealed "mailbox" with holes cut in the appropriate place for the carbs and a "heater" hose ducted to the front by the grille (but on the carb. side). Very practical, very functional. Sorry David I have so many emails I only read group ones in the groups. The rest of the MG is OK its just BOTH arches. It passed the MOT in 2003 and was driven through the summer them went into dry storage at the back of a shed till i bought it at christmas. It took me 2 hrs to dig it out. The guy has burried it under all sorts of car spares. It had 2 new wings fitted and he gave me a new door and 2 secondhand wheel arches. I had to use a trailer... MORE
FYI For any car addicts (british or non-british) in SoCal area needing a car fix this winter, there will be a Car Show (charity event) in San Juan Capistrano, CA this February 5th, Saturday. I missed last year's show but from pics it looked like a good turn-out of several hundred. I bought and fitted a pair of inertia reel seat belts sold by the MGOC that bolt to the wheel arch. They adjust in orientation so they are in the correct plane to work. They are only on cars originally fitted with inertia real seat belts. When I came to repairing the inner rear arches on mine I changed the mountings for of the inertia reel belts. as my car originally had static belts. Had I known what a pain they were going to be to find I would not have bothered, but its too late now. The bracket bolt onto the side of the inner wheel arch, then go to the top of the arch and have a bend so the top part lays flat on the top of the arch, and... MORE

Has any one got the brakets for the inertia reel seatbelts, even better the seat belts themselves. I bought a new set for my car, but they are an adjustable type. The instructons for them tell you to bolt them directly to he side of the wheel arch, and they just look wrong to me, would be better on the proper bracket that goes up and over the inner arch should anyone have a pair flaoting about!. Ken, If you use a catch can, and run any hoses up vertically for any distance at all, I don't think you need any baffles. Any oil that pukes out will end up on the sides of the hose and run back down into the crankcase unless there is such a rush of air out of there to carry it into the tank. This stand for HUGE American Car. I'm going to change the brake fluid on the 70 Impala, as it has no viscosity, and is black as swamp water. After I drain the master with a turkey baister, and add the new fluid, I will go for the wheel cylinders. Jens.... What, pray tell, are you waiting for? Install the oil pressure limiting valve NOW and you will answer your own question! :) The answer is probably yes. And MAYBE it will also solve that puff of smoke you get out the exhaust after driving from cold a mile or so down the road? But have you changed to a fresh rubber diaphragm within the valve? And don't tell me the valve is new so you don't have to!!! :) Are you (per Guy's post) using the filtered plastic oil filler cap as well? Higher than required oil pressure... MORE
