Assertive, organized (priorities) toward meeting the objective(s) so to speak. (I like girls like this. I've only put about 500 miles on my Rivergate conversion. I initally had questions about the custom clutch. I thought the trowout bearing was a datsun part? Anyway... I was concerned about being able to replace the clutch should rivergate not be in existence when the time came. However, I talked to my local transmission shop, and they said it would be no problem to fabricate. I plan on putting some serious miles on the Midget this summer. Ask me again at the end of the year how it is going. Otherwise I am happy with the clutch performance.... MORE
Do you realise that many of us seem to suffer from selective memory loss? I am refering , in this case, to the seat material of our wonderful little cars. Now we are used to modern seat materials that are usually what might be described as breathable, we have this tendency to forget what the original seat materials were like. For instance, if the car was parked in the sun and you sat on it wearing shorts for example, the degree of discomfort could be quite high. ;-) (Mini skirts, I am told, did not help particularly under these... awful-o!! Yes, David, they were. :) Used to think good sheepskin seat covers were an overpriced deal. Well.. I was wrong. I have had mine for about 20 years now (no kidding) and they are still going strong with minor repairs carried out by a local tailor from time to time. He also cut them down from Spridget length to Bugeye length when I "went back to basics:! :) No slipping into the footwell :):) and warm in the winter, cool in the summer. They remove easily for brushout and were a well worth while investment in comfort for... MORE
I've seen them all shades of black including underseal. I've seen them with chrome and stainless trims. I've seen them rusty brown with holes. I've seen them with painted over rubberized paint. I've seen them with the same colour and finish as the rest of the car. Which although is not original looks far better, and classic IMHO. Mine will be the same colour as the bodywork. During my restoration of my shell, I had to take this off to repair it, but on the 1500 there are 4 spot-weld holding it onto the inner wheelarch, the rest is bolted onto the radiator mountings and the front chassis members just like any other midget in that respect. Given these spot-weld are already undone is there anything to be gained by welding them back on or can I just drill 4 holes and put bolts in their place? and will this make putting in and taking the engine out any easier? Tim I am not that familiar with the 1500 cars but I expect the engine will have to come out to replace the clutch and so this is going to cost 300 in most garages, however if money is tight and the engine was running OK before the gasket blew why not just get that fixed (maybe 150 or so). The problem with second hand engines is that they may be no better than the one you have and you are not going to know without removing the head and checking the bores, so it will still cost you... Oh, yeah.. that's right. 1098's didn't come with an oil cooler. Right, right, right...I had to transfer mine over from my wrecked PO'd '67 I was working on, when acquiring my 1098 equipped BE to take it's place. I am a little surprised you are only getting 65psi "cold" out of a "new" motor, Brad. Not that this is "bad" or anything like that, but most newly rebuilt motors built to street tolerances (IMHO) put out 70+. Further to my query regarding the water leak, I think it has been answered finally by the fact that on it's way to the garage this morning to be inspected, the head gasket blew. As usual this happened about 400 yards from the garage in question, leading me to wonder why as these things couldn't have waited for a few minuites longer until I was actually AT the garage and saved me a recovery fee. Wes, I switched to 5.5 American Racing wheels last summer. They will NOT fit without mods on a 1500 running 165 x 70's. The front and rear wheel arches will rub. The malpractice lawsuits for less than reasonable care over here are piled to the ceiling and abound to the extent Doctors are leaving the profession considering ever rising mal-pratice insurance premiums. I have become used to it, because someone in the Tavistock, Devon, UK area has a white car consisting of a later rear half with a frogeye bonnet. The radiator grill is shiny chrome with the initials A H showing in cut-out letters. It does look a little unusual. If it comes out to play later this year I'll try and take a photo'. I suggested the thermostat, unchanged in 140,000 miles might be stuck open...but would it get more open (opener?) as the engine warmed up? Quiet normal if its engine speed related. more water going through the rad, (water pump speeded up) and more air being foced though the rad (more air taing the heat way fron the water). My cuz in Irving called me this morning. He is having trouble with his 97 F150 6 cylinder 300CID....it is underheating. It will barely move the needle off cool, and after a while, gets even cooler! I suggested the thermostat, unchanged in 140,000 miles might be stuck open...but would it get more open (opener?) as the engine warmed up? What is normal? It may be the gage. Do the thermostat, or at least check it. Pull it out and put in a pan of cold water on the stove and bring to boil. It should open around 160 or 180 degrees. Then either check water temp against gage with a thermomator ( I use an instant read cooking thermometer) (Maybe that is why I am not married any more lolol) or use the shade tree mechanics method. 100 - 130 degrees. Hot to touch but can hold hand on hose for about 10 seconds. 130 - 150 degrees Hotter, can hold... MORE
it sounds a bit like a sliding sun roof, rather along the lines of the 'Web asto'. The plexiglass could be a wind deflector? Absolutely correct. You need a hole in your roof to fit it. Used on tin tops or occasionally in a removable hard top for a sports car, although I can't think why. Common fitting to MGB GTs Have a look on MGB site I'm sure you'll see one or two. Hi folks! I have just purchased a 1977 MG Midget 1500 in what I can only describe as 'tired' condition. Although it has an MOT it does have a few faults, and as I am not in the least bit mechanically minded I need some advice as to what repair is required. Ed No I wasn't referring to the rear wing seams. The spridget shell is constructed from many parts and assemblies, many of which have been spot welded together - anywhere you look on the car you will see overlapped steel joints where one 'assembly' has been spot welded to another. It's these 'overlapped' joints where one piece of steel overlaps another piece of steel and has been spot welded that I'm referring to. Because the spot welds are done at intervals down the steel panel, this doesn't form a 'continuous weld' and leaves areas that water can get into... MORE
