"Anyone ever fitted electric fan to a Mk.3 Midget..... Affirmative, M&M....guilty. Front mounted along with use of 5 bladed trop plastic fan for summer, heavy NYC Metro area traffic...good results. A few questions....is the tendency to run warm occurring "at speed" or crawling along as in traffic! Are you using a theromstadt? If so, summer one? You running a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix? Hi all, Well I am now back home from my week in Scotland, with over 100 e-mail waiting for me. I drove up in Ava, my Mk 3 Midget, and she behaved beautifully over the 503 miles. Only did about 40 miles while there, as we drove in the CRV each day from our B&B to the cottage we are renovating. We achieved what we set out to do on this visit, i.e. lay a concrete floor in one of the downstairs rooms, have the electrics hooked up properly to the new wiring, and get the windows in where... They just stopped by Placerville on Hwy 50 on their way to Gardnerville Nevada and eventually Wisconsin - or was that Minnesota? This is the cross-country pickup of a 71 Midget from Southern California. They've had a hot-running car, which fits the 100+ weather, but the 14lb cap is holding and, tho it dribbles once stopped, seems to be holding pressure fine. The fancy wide wheels are a bit too wide and the left rear tire has been rubbing, but a service stop in Fairfield on the way across California saw some adjustment for clearance. I wish now I'd... Re: Fuel Pump Pressure? Hey does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be coming out of the fuel pump on a 1978 1500 midget? Mine is 5 1/2 pounds. When I drive over 3500 RPM's / 60-65 MPH the gas goes to the front charcoal canister, fills it and chokes out the carb. I take off the bottom hose, drain and ok for another 20 miles. Don't! If there is water in it you need room for a header - for expansion - and that means all the hoses etc to give proper circulation, and you will be able to run it only for a few moments, and if there is not a header - how much money did you say you want to throw away on an unnecessary rebuild? On the other hand, why not take it apart and have a peek whilst you are there and save all the trouble and aggravation! Just a look inside the rocker cover will give you a... MORE
a friend of mine wanted to test a secondhand Triumph Dolomite engine before buying it, and simply connected top and bottom hose together, and with the temperature gauge connected, just ran it till it showed on the gauge - a minute or two - long enough to see if there were any unusual noises or anything. (the engine was 'mounted' in a supermarket trolley for this test!) This method is simpler if you don't have access to a water supply, but slightly more risky than Cap'n Bob's, as there is nowhere for the expanding coolant to go, so pressure... MORE
Don.... Is the water pump is operable and on the engine and belt hooked up? If so, hook up a hose (tape, whatever) and "feed" the motor thru the thermo cover letting it run out the back (block heater outlet) using a normal hose hooked up to a spigot at low flow velocity? And I wouldn't take a chance on a malfunctioning stadt, either. Go stadtless. Otherwise I have no clue since in summer temps., mine warms up virtually in a heartbeat...really. Hi, Hamondale.... This does seem like overkill with all the excellent lining material we have today for the street, doesn't it? However, once he's got the biasing valve in place, it will sure stop! And the "quicker" you can stop, the "quicker" you can go for a longer period of time in distance. So I think I MAY have a handle on why he is doing this in a street application. You can only get so "hard" on linings before they lose their effectiveness 'cause you can't keep them "hot" enough on the street at "normal" speeds in "normal"... MORE
The 1098 engines came with a vertical flow radiator. Listening to others on the list the best solution appears to be to have your radiator re-cored. apparently it costs less and is more efficient than buying a new cross flow, and much more efficient than buying as used one, which could come with problems built in, as it were, due to age. The fitting that comes off of the radiator for the top radiator hose has rusted and is leaking badly around the base. It also leaks slightly from the bottom. With both of those, I thought it would be better to just get a new one. More cooling sounds good though. rlirwn@... 23161... MORE

Hi, Don.... Larry Miller lives out on the "left coast" as well and tells me it's so hot out there that he's not doing any Spritely top down driving at all. Up here in the Northeast we just got a cold front that went by after a couple of 95F days with humidity to match. So it's around 80 or so with humidty not too bad. And we deserve it after a rotten winter and virtually no Spring, to speak of. Finally good enough to finish up some bodywork for spot painting, maybe in a week or so....then maybe... MORE

I checked and have found the relevant mounting points. The wheel well attachment consisted of two studs with chrome dome nuts. Can anyone suggest a US source for the proper 3-point belts? I don't believe that they would have been retractable. Thanks, Herman "hermanfarrer" 22891... MORE

I need to install seat belts and would like to know whether all of the mounting points for a 3-point system are already in place or whether modifications need to be made. Yes...but..the job is done correctly and it's a "one off" deal....and the seats are securely buttoned down (as they should be) which means YOU are securely buttoned down assuming you use your seat belt. Don, Have been following your discussion of mystery mods. This may help. It sounds like your 74 has twin carbs. In 75 they went to the single Zenith and the third rubber hose from the canister hooked up to a compression fitting on the back or firewall side of the carb near the bottom.
