I think GTX is Castrol's motor oil. If you use Castrol brake fluid, it is LMA. Assuming your brake hydraulics have been rebuilt since the car left the factory, any brand DOT 3 will be fine. One foreign parts store told me Castrol Dot 3. Another foreign parts store said Castrol GTX(exceeds Dot 3). They said the GTX was a low moisture absorbtion (lma) fluid since the brake and clutch used natural rubber, not synthetic rubber like american cars. Question-will any dot 3 or dot 4 fluid do fine? every day is a Sprite day. As we near the end of summer daytime temperatures are around 83F Even in the depths of winter daytime temps are around 64F. Our main problem is frying at traffic lights especially in the middle of summer, 104+degrees. Heaven for me is cruising around the Gold Coast on a summer evening. Adam Do you mean the threads on the master cylinder or the threads on the brass connector. The threads on the connector actually looked like they weren't in great condition, but it never leaked there before, so I just screwed them back in. Do you know if the teflon tape will disintegrate over time from contact with the brake fluid?\ Bob rlirwn@... 36323... MORE
I put a little bit of Teflon tape (like you use on gas & water pipes) on the brake line threads. Be careful not to do too much, because you do not want a pice of tape floating through your brake system. I have had no leaks yet in my system, pipe-wise. I got my resleeved master and clutch slave cylinders for my bugeye back from Whitepost and installed them. When I started to bleed the brakes more fluid came out around the brake line attachment point than came out of the bleeder at the rear brake. I didn't replace all the brake lines and would really prefer not to do that. When I installed the lines I just screwed them into the master cylinder (after cleaning them first with clean brake fluid and drying them). Is there something else that I should have done? Greetings: I recently purchased a 1960 Bugeye Sprite, and I'm having quite a time figuring out what prior owners did to it. Case in point: On the front timing cover is a canister looking apparatus with one single rubber hose coming out of it. On my car, the hose goes nowhere. What is this thing? I just got a sabelt three point racing harness at a british swap meet with the intention of fitting it to the stock seat belt mounting points on my 1971 mg midget. I got home and noticed a small problem. The belt that extends behind the seat to the rear point is too long. IMHO, this is not a good idea. There are some things that a "Shade Tree Mechanic" can do, after all, I are one, but there are some parts to the LBC that might be better left to a "British Car Mechanic." As far as your list, Wouldn't a simple "I'll pay you $50-$100, you look it over, turn it over, try to start it, check brakes, etc, and 1. tell me what you think, and 2. give me an estimate as to what you think it needs, what the parts and labor to do will be, and if agreed... I recognize this is one of those thological deputes that have been debated for years, like wht fluid shouold I use in my dashpots, 20 weight or atf. The fact is that my engine is still within the tolerences specified in the haynes manual. That is it is only .001 larger than stock. This being teh case there is a slight ridge at athe top that needed to be taken off to safely remove the pistons. Plus, how is it that a re ring and hone job would be any shorter lived than a re bore which would necessitate,... MORE

79 Midget, quick question: Does anyone know the type of fitting that goes into the back of the master and slave cylinder? Back story: Car was running great, shifting just fine, 68k on the odo, One day clutch goes almost to the floor, next day it goes right to the floor, no pressure at all. topped off Master cylinder, press pedal, fluid goes all over bellhousing and tranny. I have one origonal speaker and an origonal radio installed in the radio console under the dash in front of the gearshift. I can hear it over the engine just fine, but my knee kept hitting the volume knob so that now the rado functons but I have to jiggle the knob to get it working. I just installed two more speakers in holes placed in the masonite bulkhead behind the seats (the one that forms a barrier between the trunk and the cabin) that were cut before I owned it. I rebuild mine and consider myself a C- mechanic. After jacking up the R side, it is accessed thru the large rubber plug on the R side of the tunnel. For me it was just time consuming since you'll have to bleed afterwards. One trick I used was to put a piece of plastic wrap (rubber banded) around the top of the master before you open the bleed nipple on the slave, as this will keep most of the fluid in the system instead of on your garage floor. I have three-point inertia reels set up in my BE. The reels are anchored to reinforcements behind the seats. If you go to http://ntahc.org/modifiedhealeys/Photos/157Hammond/157Hammond.htm and scroll down 1/4 of the page, there are pictures. But you will need a roll bar as an anchor point for the shoulder loop, so if you don't have one and you're only talking inertia reel lap belts, it's probably not worth looking at the pictures, since what I did will not help you.
