I've been thinking about installing a DCOE onto my 1500 Midget, and they say you need to convert to fully mechanical advance. I've looked at replacing with the Mallory Unilite distributor, but it's a bit expensive. Has anyone done a DCOE install and just recurved the original distributor? Or does anyone have more information on recurving one of these distributors? any help would be greatly appreciated. '79 MG Midget Chris "Chris" 31846... MORE

I found the source of the wisp of smoke from the starter area to be that the 3 wire connector between the distributer and ignition module (Howard Assoc. of Costa Mesa Ca.) was sometimes shorting against the +12 Volts to the starter (neg. earth set up). It's no longer in a position to short, But I still loose ignition after I start to crank. Think I cooked the ignition box? If so, what would be the hot choice to replace it? The heater casing on 1500 Midgets was similar to the immediately preceding one (like my '74 RWA car) ie combined heater and blower, which slopes upwards to the blower, unlike the earlier square heater and on mine it's impossible to manoeuvre the battery into place without tipping it forwards - not a good thing to be doing when it's full of acid! North American (and Swedish!) cars actually used a different type of hinge from late '68, which may account for different opening heights at the rear edge - the new one was a cantilever type, so it ought... I have recently bought a 1965 Mark 2 Midget which has been converted to negative earth (for a radio I have removed from the car) by the previous owner, but I dont know when. Shortly after I got the car the tacho started reading approximately half the actual engine revs and shortly after that it ceased to function altogether. Could this be a symptom of the tacho not being repolarised? I have seen the description of changing battery polarity in the web site and my tacho does not seem to have had the white wire loop at the back... MORE

Hi guys! I need some help here. I have a problem with my newly installed 1275 engine, what happens is that when the car is warming up with the choke out everything is normal - just the normal amount of smoke from the exhaust. But when the engine is getting warmer and the choke is pushed gradualy back it starts smoking clouds og grey smoke especially when i give it throttle, it only lasts for a short while then its back to normal. The valve I have used is:- ADU9102 Heater valve was 88G601 And yes I did mean an MGB rotary control with cable. But I did start off with a straight push/pull cable originally which is simpler to install. This along with a suitable control cable is available from MiniMania, see link below. James, You are right, mustangs are nice cars (I had a '67), but there is something different about driving a midget. Guess there's one short way to explain it.... I used to fly off aircraft carriers, and sitting in the cockpit of a midget is the closest thing to being in a jet on the ground. Just wish I had an afterburner strapped on...or at least overdrive! A common mod is to replace the locally operated valve (ie one with the hand wheel attached on top) with a remotely operated one which are much more commonly available. The advantage of this is that you can then buy a control cable (either a heater control from say an early mini or a choke control for a Spridget - I've used a rotary control from a B in my car) mount it in a suitable place in the car and you then can control the heat without having to get out and lift the bonnet (hood). Just want to say a big thanks to everyone who answered my post. As advised, I fitted a fuel pressure regulator yesterday. Early days yet, but it's purring like a kitten! It's never run so well. I was working on the car as I was thinking of selling it. It now runs the best it ever has and I'm starting to have doubts about selling it after all. Hi Ben Don't forget that plain rubber hoses aren't just a rubber tube..... or at least they shouldn't be!! The standard hoses should have a sort of fabric mesh inside the rubber, a bit like the wires in a garden hosepipe to stop it expanding under pressure. I've never heard of a plain rubber oil cooler hose popping....if they did nobody would make them! I made the panel behind my console out of 3/4" plywood and 1/8" hardboard, then cut a hole in the center of it to give me room for the wires coming ou t of the back of a cheap pioneer cd/stereo unit from WalMart. It looks fine and was not much work at all. I do not know how it would work for a std ribcase, but it works fine with the shifter location on my datsun 5speed. Alan Hershaw....float level Bet you hit the nail on the head Alan, considering color of spark plugs under normal driving conditions. Too much fuel pressure can also be the gremlin. I have a '76 midget with the weber conversion (New carb). Car runs fine under normal use (35,000 miles), but sometimes when idling at lights, the engine will "choke up", and start to falter. Revving the engine will clear it (accompanied by black smoke until cleared). This also can happen doing short stop-start errands in town. I'll get back to the car and it will require full throttle cranking, will misfire and eventually clear once I've given it some revs (accompanied again by the black smoke). Ed.. 2 years isn't that long for the engine/ drivetrain though this will most likely not be so for the hydraulics. Have a portable FIREX standing by. Assuming the fuel pump is doing it's thing, add as much fresh gasoline as you can. Pull the plugs and using a healthy battery, turn over the motor until the oil pressure comes up. Do this in 5 second spurts over a period of time so as not to abuse the starter motor. Reinstall the plugs and fire it up, running initially gently. Good luck! :) Cap'n. Hi all As discussed in the previous thread my 1500 is totally standard bar the K&N filter, which was fitted and set up by the MGOC on their rolling road. However it has always been a bit hesitant, especially pulling away from cold. I also noticed it yesterday when it was fully warmed up and I was driving along at about 40.Ipressed the pedal down to accelerate and there was a definate hesitation, almost like turbo lag.
