HHmmm... I don't see how towing would fall under that category.... How would a tow truck be allowed to tow a vehicle. At least in MD... you see wrecked...no tags on the vehicle... most definitely wrecked 'non-operational' vehicles towed wheels on the ground all the time. Mark Don't do it the gauge is easy to remove the dash is not. Just undo the knurled nut at the back of the clamp and pop it out, the oil pipe union can be unscrewed from the engine or the back of the gauge (once popped out) the water temperature sender connection if it is into the rad (as mine is on the 66) can be a bit of a pig to remove without damaging the sender cable but if you are renewing the gauge this will not matter. "I am building a 1275 to the specs of my 1340 Cooper S that I had in the UK. I had the cam ground close to the 731 cam that I had in that motor. It will have a big valve head and cooper s distributor. It is .030 over. I have several leather hides and decided to cover all panels and dash with that. HI all: I have a 1979 midget 1500 that currently has a group 24 battery.this does not fit well in the stock battery box, but this is the size that the auto parts place shows is correct. Biff, Thanks. I checked everything you mentioned and Wham!, the dimmer switch on the floor had a loose connection. It looked like it was hooked up but when I wiggled the center wire around, the lights came on. I cleaned all three connections and the headlights are on! Thanks a bunch, Jack "austinbud2002" 23412... HELP! I hate to bug you just when I have a problem but here goes: Every other electrical light and accessory on my MKII Sprite is working EXCEPT the headlights. Yes, Electric Fan well worth doing (IMHO). Mine is actually a mk2 Sprite but I have a Kenlowe fitted as a puller (i.e. inside the engine bay pulling air in through the rad) and the engine fan removed. I actually ignored the Kenlowe fitting kit which is a one size fits none Heath Robinson affair. I slung the fan on some brackets attached to the shroud. It's been like that for several years 20k miles and seems fine. Ava would have a different rad. of course but still possible I expect. It's a great mod beacuse it's win-win. The... MORE
The green wire spoken of is inside the case. An excellent illustration is on this site: http://www.lotus-cortina.com/electric/convert.htm There is also a schematic for the more technical savvy. A 150 ohm resistor, (mistakenly called a diode in some instructions) in the "positive ground" unit one end is soldered to the "power in lug" which in a positive ground car would be the negative side of the battery. I've completed converting my Bugeye over to negative ground, but I am having a problem converting the tachometer from positive ground to negative. The only tach conversion instructions I have been able to find on the internet or books are for a different type (earlier positive ground tachs?) and the configuration & colored wires do not match. I need advise from Listers who have done a similar tach conversion in past. First ... tach is not original Bugeye. My tach is from a later Mark 2 Sprite (HAN7), specifically a Smiths RVI2401/00 Positive Earth. The white wires wrap around... MORE
"Anyone ever fitted electric fan to a Mk.3 Midget..... Affirmative, M&M....guilty. Front mounted along with use of 5 bladed trop plastic fan for summer, heavy NYC Metro area traffic...good results. A few questions....is the tendency to run warm occurring "at speed" or crawling along as in traffic! Are you using a theromstadt? If so, summer one? You running a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix? Hi all, Well I am now back home from my week in Scotland, with over 100 e-mail waiting for me. I drove up in Ava, my Mk 3 Midget, and she behaved beautifully over the 503 miles. Only did about 40 miles while there, as we drove in the CRV each day from our B&B to the cottage we are renovating. We achieved what we set out to do on this visit, i.e. lay a concrete floor in one of the downstairs rooms, have the electrics hooked up properly to the new wiring, and get the windows in where... Thanks to all for the advice and humor. I will not start it indoors on a carpet floor and if in if in a grocery cart will do so on level ground. At this point I think I will just push it under the big oak tree out back and use block and tackle to lower it back in and out as necessary. They just stopped by Placerville on Hwy 50 on their way to Gardnerville Nevada and eventually Wisconsin - or was that Minnesota? This is the cross-country pickup of a 71 Midget from Southern California. They've had a hot-running car, which fits the 100+ weather, but the 14lb cap is holding and, tho it dribbles once stopped, seems to be holding pressure fine. The fancy wide wheels are a bit too wide and the left rear tire has been rubbing, but a service stop in Fairfield on the way across California saw some adjustment for clearance. I wish now I'd... Terry, I am running a narrowed Vega 3.36 posi rearend in my Sprite. It has drum brakes, the emergency brake mechanisms of which are actuated by cables in sleeves as you might expect. I was able to adapt the stock E-brake lever mechanism quite neatly with some fabrication. The stock e-brake linkage on the rear axle was not useful to me. Hi A friend with a 1500 rubber bumper job has just bought (breakers yard job) the rear disks and calipers from a Rover 216 GSi. He has been told these will fit his midget, all he has to do is make up a new back plate to support the caliper. He has been told the original habdbreak cable can be retained. Has anyone done this if so have you a drawing of the backplate to give him a start. He has just fitted the frontline telescopic mod and thinks it is fantastic, makes the front of the car more... MORE
G'day Bill Use ordinary auto electrical wire and wrap it tightly around 1/4" pipe (or screwdriver shaft). It will become, and remain, curly. Or you can just loop the wire around the steering column 2 or 3 times, loosly. If anybody has installed a Rivergate in a MK II Sprite, what do you do about the adjustment to the metal shifter housing cover and boot so that it looks fairly original and not "butchered" up. Is there another boot out there that you can recommend? This thing wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Also, if anybody decides to order one, make sure that you know what size crank is in there or you'll get the wrong seal AND they have to know if your car is RHD or LHD. I didn't tell them and got... Nigel, Most guages that are wired are nothing but "volt meters" re marked to read temperature, tank levels. They are powered by the car electrical system through some for of a potentiometer. In a 12 volt system, full voltage is sent to the potentiometer, and depending on the design of the "pot" the voltage supplied will be increased or decreased as the potentiometer actuator is moved (via float in a fuel tank sending unit). You should be able to attache the leads of a volt meter to one wire from the guage and the other to chassis ground and... MORE
Nigel, Set the multimeter to resistance and connect one lead to the metal flange of the sender unit and one to the wiring spade. As you raise and lower the float there should be a smooth increase and decrease in resistance reading. Sorry, I forget what the normal resistance reading is bit if the resistance reading varies smoothly then the sender unit is most likely fine. If the unit has been sitting for a long time you may have to exercise it some to break up any oxidation on the surface of the wire wound resistance strip inside the... MORE
